Hush Inara, the adults are talking. That post was for Daerth, because I believe buried under all those Amarrian morals is the soul of a real human being trying to escape. I gave up on you right around the time you screeched that a "few hundred thousand" ****s throughout the Empire was nothing to get outraged about....

Well, even if Gottii is turning off my feed for his viewing, I would like to point out that I don't think that those few hundred thousand instances should be overlooked (in fact I'm appalled by the Amarr Empire's lack of control over such situations) what I am saying is that you can not use those statistically few (0.000006% if you figure 300,000 instances in a populace of 5 Trillion) instances against the entirety of an Empire.
Ignorance is bliss, and I believe Gottii has beaten all Amarrian zealots to Heaven.

Pilot Gotti. That you were abused does not surprise me. I believe that you or someone posted a comms link to an article in the Scope some time back about some thousands of slaves left to rot in a cargohold of a Bestower class Industrial all because the men that sought to own them abandoned them over a gambling debt. This is not common, but it does happen.
Many die in the Empire each day. There are bad masters that abuse and use their slaves for their amusement and to further their plans to attain power and wealth. There are those that use their slaves like animals to fuel their greed and lusts. What you do not understand is that these acts are sins in the eyes of God. Greed, Lust, Vanity, all are sins that some of those that rule Amarr brush aside or ignore. That these men and women are powerful or wealthy does not excuse their actions. God does not care for wealth or power, those that abuse his children (we are all of us His children) will face His wrath. I can offer you no more comfort than that. What I do is to sa***uard the lives and souls of my people as best I can. I see to their needs and wants as I can. You should take comfort in the fact that there are those of us who see our responsibilities to our slaves as just that... responsibilities. The Law can only do so much, and I agree, is inadequate in these cases. But think, just a few decades ago, the idea that there were actually laws that gave slaves rights were unheard of. There has been progress. Slow to be sure, but it is progress.
I will tell you a story. There was a slave child. She was beautiful, like the rising sun over wide fields of grain. She was often seen about my home, running and playing. I have no children of my own, and those of my slaves, retainers whatever you want to call them, are welcome in my House. They come and go, often at will and whim. I see them and often think of my little sister, when we were happy...before the Blood Raiders came. Anyway, this child was smart and beautiful. She was kind and gentle, and like many children, trusting.
I made a mistake. I hired a man, an Amarrian, to oversee the field sections closest to her Family's village. That man was well recommended, and so I though little of hiring him. I was a fool. That man liked small children too, boys and girls mattered not, but not for the same reasons I did, and you do. I cannot say what happened, it is far too painful, and raises within my spirit things I do not wish to set free again. Salah did not die, but she should have. What she endured for those weeks was ... inhuman. <Veron Daerth's face becomes like rock, cold and hard and uncaring> What i did to that man, when I discovered why that child had stopped being so .. bright and wonderful...was worse. <Veron Daerth clenches his fist, and his voice drops to a sibilant hiss> He was made to suffer, long and terribly. Before the end, he begged me to let him die, and I did relent, but it was a long time coming.
<Veron Daerth's face clears, becomes more... human> I know not if that was justice, and I do not care. That man was an Amarrian citizen. A Ni-Kunni by birth and a freeman. He, by his acts, demonstrated that he could not be treated as a human being though, and he got what I feel he deserved. I could do nothing for Salah, though she wants for little. She rarely speaks these days, and it breaks me to see it.
For her sake and those like her, I would rend the cosmos apart and drown it in fire, but that is beyond me. I have learned of the price of my failures when it comes to they who are mine, Pilot Gotti. I am saddened to hear that your Master learned no such lessons. What you see as oppression, I see as the ultimate form of caring. I accept their lives into my hands, and they trust me with them. I know that few have this relationship, and that too, saddens me. But I will NEVER forsake them that trust in my guidance. I will NEVER fail them as I failed her, so long ago.
God go with you all.

*Vaden peruses his ship harbor, chagrined at the vastly smaller size it was just a few months prior. The fortunes of war, he supposes. He examines his current favorite, a Guardian he has dubbed the Bane of Loviatar, named after a little known Sani Sabik leader who preached inflicting pain along with his blood sacrifices. As he inspects, he notices one of his Vherokior slaves polishing the golden armor. He nods his head in approval. A link to GalNet pops open as Inara's last message begins. He had set it to open immediately once his colleague began speaking. He turns closer to the comm's station to listen closely and respond when he stops and sees something out of the corner of his eye. The Vherokior slave, an attractive young woman in her mid-20s, was placing her bare hand on his golden Amarrian vessel. With the Galnet open, he harshly berates her for her carelessness, slapping her across the face once her twice to accentuate key points. As she cowers and begs forgiveness, his eyes flash with anger. He orders her to not eat or sleep until every centimeter of gold is wiped clean of the oil of her flesh and polished, an ordeal surely to take more than a day. Finally, he returns to the comm's station to begin his response.*
Slavery in and of itself cannot be evil. Slavery is a concept, immune to the concepts of vice and virtue. Only slaves and slave owners can be classified as evil. As I'm sure some of you witnessed, a recently acquired *looks crossly at Inara's face on the GalNet* Vherokior disobeyed my orders and had to be disciplined. Some of you might think that her discipline was too harsh. But consider that if she were a hired employee, I could simply fire her. And despite her education, she would be hard pressed to find any place to hire her, resulting in her starvation and death. Yes, she has quite a task for the next day or so, but at the end of her trial, she will always have a warm meal and a bed waiting for her. And for those of you who will assume me to be a lecherous old man, it is not my bed she shares. That place is reserved for one woman. Now excuse me, I have other ships to inspect.
I will not lie to you, though I will deceive you. |

My apologies for that, I got a bit carried away. The point of that was to illustrate that some of us actually care for those whose lives we hold and protect. They serve us, and we serve them.
I do not say it is fair, and I do not say it is alway equitable, but I believe that with time, and patience, that those that would use the system of slavery to garner the worldly treasures of power and wealth will fall to those of us who see it as a system of care for those that otherwise could not defend themselves. I would love nothing more than to see slavery as it is practiced in the Empire fall, and have all the slaves therein granted citizenship and take their rightful place in the Empire. It would strengthen the Empire as a whole, and would go far toward addressing the problems that plague us today.
This is of course just my opinion. Take it as you will.

“Can I still visit the old tree, or pet the goats by Blueberry Creek?” “I don’t think so Marissa.”
“Will they take us?” “I don’t know Marissa.”
“But Dad won’t let them take us, he will fight!” the girl said defiantly. Her mother looked away into the fire of the hearth. “That is what I’m afraid of.”
“Why are they doing this mum?” “Mum?” she repeated after a brief pause. “They say they want to free us. Help us.... I just wish they would leave us alone.”
“Why isn’t the Empire protecting us?” “The Empire was foolish. The Empire prepared for peace while the terrorists prepared for war. The Empire thought they could solve their differences peacefully. You know grandpa always said ‘you can’t teach a mean dog to be good, you need to put it down’. I think the Empire forgot that.”
The mother gently took her daughter's hand with her own before adressing her.
“Marissa, if they land remember to remove your Amarrian cross and put those symbols I have hidden in the cellar around your neck. And if you see them, yell ‘for Freedom!’ and raise your fist.” “But mum, isn’t that lying? Cause lying is a sin, the Priest said so.” “Please Marissa, do it for me. Just this once.”
“Can I take my prayerbook with me if they take us?” “No Marissa, you have to leave it behind. If you need to pray after they come, do it silently, in your mind. And if you see me being friendly with them, don’t ever tell your father. I’m just doing that to save our lives. Remember that.” “Yes mum.”
“Now let us pray. While we still can.”

I'm curious though, the picture of your slave girl here, what genetic stock is she from, pray tell? She reminds me of a Ni-kunni I knew once, about a year and a half ago. She was a tad older though.

Perhaps it is true Pilot Bloodbird, perhaps not. I wasnt there on Sahtogas and I dont think you were. That said, this does seem a bit... over the top. Perhaps it was meant to simply be an allegory?
I keep many slaves that would respond in a similar manner if attacked, especially by those that they do not recognize. While those that I hold have not had to do so as yet, perhaps they will in the future. I pray for their safety each day, and have done the best I can to see to their wellbeing.
Perhaps I can have someone chronicle the daily life of one of my slaves on one of my estates. Like a journal or something. Perhaps I could ask a slave to keep one and submit it to me after a time? Do you think that would do anything to enlighten those outside Amarr to how life in the Empire is like? I wonder if it would do any good. Your thoughts on this matter?
Anyone else's thoughts are welcome as well. God go with you all.

No apologies my friend, we all get carried away on occasion. In fact if I was in your shoes, there would be a good chance he would still to this day be begging me to kill him (or kill him without having a brain scanner attached to send him to a new clone to begin the torture anew). Children are sacred, even to a pirate like me.

I will not fall due to my use of slavery for my own profit, because I use part of that profit to care for those that could not defend themselves. I am called "Mistress Subaka" for a reason, I have an iron hand when "correction" is needed; both steady (fair) and firm (harsh). There is a definitive difference though between abuse and discipline, and it is a fine line to walk (ask any parent).

I'll do you one better, allow the Empire to fall and then the likes of you and me can go correct the actions of those "false masters". I am rather adept with a cat-o-nine-tails, and would like nothing better than to go to sleep at night to the music of their screams.
Originally by: Veron Daerth This is of course just my opinion. Take it as you will.
Opinions are a great thing, one that can not be taken away by anyone, and suppressed by even less.
*glares at her companion in flight*
I told you to treat her right, she wasn't sold to you for manual labor. Her talents lie in more civil matters such as house keeping and kitchen labor. If any of my slaves see you and decide to reawaken your next clone, I will not be holding them responsible (in fact they might be eating at my table for a few weeks).
I should have known better than to allow you to buy one of my slaves, even under the agreement you wouldn't make her move out of her current quarters.
And you are not helping the case for those slaves like Marissa that wish to stay in a life of safe servitude.
May the punishment meet the crime, a smudge on the all too shiny gold plating of your ship will not detract from it's usefulness. Forcing her to clean the ship is punishment enough, but disallowing food and sleep is barbarism beyond that of the Matari "freedom fighters". I would suggest locking your doors and changing any passcodes that your slaves might know for the next few weeks.
*shakes head* I wish I could apologize for my companion, but his actions are his own and outside of my control.
Originally by: BloodBird I'm curious though, the picture of your slave girl here, what genetic stock is she from, pray tell? She reminds me of a Ni-kunni I knew once, about a year and a half ago. She was a tad older though.
You speak the truth, she does have the appearance of a Ni-Kunni... but what does that have to do with whether she's fearful for her life? I have several Ni-Kunni under my control (Mostly serving me in a legal fashion, trying to negotiate safe passage through Concord controlled space with little avail).
You speak as if slaves can only be of Minmatar origin... a silly notion at best.

That was just my point. The greatest likelyhood is that this is a work of pure fiction.
I keep many slaves that would respond in a similar manner if attacked, especially by those that they do not recognize.
Anyone would be scared of armed people they don't know landing near their homes, regardless of what they look like or who they are or what they seek to do. I'm quite sure your people would be terrified even if it was me landing by them with a troop of Intaki marines, simply because they would have no idea who we were, or why we were there. They could allways guess though.
While those that I hold have not had to do so as yet, perhaps they will in the future. I pray for their safety each day, and have done the best I can to see to their wellbeing.

Perhaps. The sad fact is the majority of Matari will probobly not give a damn or claim it's false regardless of what you do. I'm not sure about the rest though. I for one could find a slave's cronicle somewhat entertaining reading material. Even better if it was true.
Anyone else's thoughts are welcome as well. God go with you all.

You're training yours too softly, Mistress. This morning she talked back to me, hence the manual labor. Should she learn the proper respect, she will return to her normal duties.
Pilot Daerth, you were quite too merciful on such a man. A pirate I may be, but I still have standards. I'll kill your children, but I won't force myself on them. That goes beyond decency.

BloodBird,
Of course this is a work of fiction, but a very believable scenario within the realms of reality. I'm sure the invading forces either destroyed her with "friendly fire" or she was ripped from her home and sent to a refugee camp where she has little hope of surviving more than a few months at best (again, I am using Marissa as a replacement name for a large group of people in the same situation).
And I was just curious about your curiosity... call it a character flaw, but I like to know what makes people tick. It makes domination much easier when you know how to disassemble someone's mind, and the more minds you understand the less surprises you run into.
And children seem to have a way to get through even the toughest of hearts... *remembers her comrade in arms and flinches* well, most hearts; So trust me when I say that nostalgia registers clearly on this end.
*Inara's face hardens a bit before continuing her communication*
Originally by: Vaden Khale You're training yours too softly, Mistress. This morning she talked back to me, hence the manual labor. Should she learn the proper respect, she will return to her normal duties.
I have never been accused of being too soft, *ponders for a second* though, I did have one clone that I over indulged on desserts, and I was rather soft around the midsection, but that is beside the point; You know as well as I do that the hormones involved with her current condition could cause certain emotional responses, and while your ego may be bruised you are probably unharmed right now.
*near anger and rage is glowing in her eyes as she continues*
If you don't start to take care of the wellbeing of the children of the gentleman that was recently here (yes, children, as in more than one bun in the proverbial oven) I will be forced to retract ownership on the grounds of breaking the contract. If I need to forward a copy to you of the terms of the trade I will... and if she happens to have complications due to your compensating for an obvious lacking I will personally make sure that you wake up in a cloning vat.
Originally by: Vaden Khale Pilot Daerth, you were quite too merciful on such a man.
At least I can agree with Mr. Khale when he says you were too merciful.
*a soft chime is heard from off screen* Well, it seems that Kotie needs to talk again. Probably wants me to tuck her in since her parents are up in the station this week, I'll be back shortly.

Mercy. It is a strange thing. I apply it whenever I can.
When I was 19 a Blood Raider force raided one of our outlying estates. Some of my family was there. My father was not, and since I was in school at the time, I was not. My mother, my 7 year old sister Mishara, and my 12 year old brother Keto, were. My mother survived. The rest did not. You have no idea what I felt. You cannot imagine what I felt. You must understand, my little brother was a little brother, and I loved him dearly. But Mishara...she was sunlight and starlight and all that was good in me, and they killed her. I pray that she never knew what was happening. My house's retainers and guards fought to almost the last man, and eventually drove off the raiding party. They managed to save my mother, and almost saved Keto. Mishara was caught in an open field.
My father gave himself to rage and hate and anguish. He waged a personal crusade against the Blood Raider Covenant, and got very very unlucky..or maybe he let his rage and hate drive him too far. His ship was destroyed. He was not a pod pilot. Mother died from grief, I think, though I was in no condition to know at the time. She saw what father had become, and what I was becoming.
In the name of my sister, I killed and destroyed and raged against the universe. Much like my father, I waged a war that could not be won. I was no pilot at the time either, and did not care if I lived or died. I became the beast that I fought. I followed the trail of the raiders that had hit our estate. I killed those that stood in my path. I maimed and tortured and killed to get information from those that had it.
I dont know exactly where it was. I was almost out of my mind, running on stims and boosters. We were just sitting out on the edge of a system, close to the edge of the galaxy, and I stood staring for several hours out into the long dark between the stars. I hadnt felt anything like an emotion for a long time at that point. I didnt care about much of anything. She came to me, there.
In my hour of dire need, I put an antique projectile weapon to my head and pulled the trigger. It misfired. They say a bullet never lies. In that instant, Mishara came to me. I saw her like I hadnt seen her in a long time. Truth be told, by that point I barely remembered her face. But there, then, in that place, I saw her, not as she was left, broken and shattered upon the earth and grass. But bright and beautiful and with a smile like unto the heart of a star.
She forgave me. She forgave me for my failure to protect her, to save her. She forgave me for not being there when she needed me most. My soul screamed under the weight of my guilt and hate and anger and despair. And she showed me a different way. She showed me forgiveness, and mercy. She told me of how God cradled her in His infinite joy, and wrapped her in Light and peace that we can never know. My brother too, came to me, and my father, and my mother. They all forgave me all my myriad sins. I wept that night. I wept and begged God for his forgiveness. And through her, He granted it to me.
I have done terrible things. Things you would never seek to know, and that I always must bear the weight of doing. But I have learned that mercy and forgiveness is the mark of a true man. It is easy to hate, and easy to kill, and easy to give in to the urges of the animal that lurks within us all. To show mercy? That is hard. To forgive? That is hard. Some are past redemption and forgiveness. But no-one is past mercy, be it the mercy of your forbearance to pull the trigger, or your mercy in a quick death. I mean it completely when I say, "May God grant you the same mercy and wisdom you showed others."
Mishara's lesson is my beacon, my hope. It lights my path in the deepest darkness, and led me from the Abyss. I will never stray from it, though it may cost me my life. My little star will always guide me, and someday, she will be there, waiting to take me home again.
God go with you.

That does not change, in my eyes, the fact that the man you spoke of earlier did not deserve death. He would not have earned the right to be judged by your God's eyes until my anger had been sated... and I've been known to hold a grudge for years.

I do terrible things on a daily basis, things that make most grown men shudder. I find mercy to be for the weak. There is only justice, of which I found the 4 nations to be lacking, which is why I fight to see them crumble and the authoritarian force known as Concord self-destruct.
Call me an animal if you think that showing mercy is necessary for being human. Forgiveness is simple, mercy is not. There is an old axiom that I have ran across in my studies of different cultures, "If I Live, I will kill you, If I Die, You are forgiven." I forgive those that attempt to kill me, but I will show no mercy in my return attempt to kill them (with cloning technology, you could say that I both live and die, therefore both are applicable).
If you mess with one of those that are dear to me, then both mercy and forgiveness are out of the question. If you mess with children I pray that someone shows you neither mercy nor forgiveness for you don't deserve either. I have a special set of rooms with a collection of specially designed tools, designed by Gallente information gatherers, that have the sole purpose of prolonging and enhancing pain and suffering without ever causing any wounds that could prove to be fatal... and I am quite adept at using them.
If there is a God that is waiting to judge me by the actions of my life, the may he show me the same firm just hand I have shown.

Sahtogas, on which the story takes place, has not been occupied by the Matari-aligned forces. However, Imperial Naval forces have been under attack by heathen warships on a daily basis. Many of the system's inhabitants, slave and citizen alike, fear a Republic occupation force may land any day.
The story simply illustrates the fears of a particular child and her mother. They simply don't know what will happen to them *if* the Matari occupy Sahtogas. However, some of the things they fear are very real possibilities.
Why publish this story? I published it because the Matari tend to gloss over such things. They like to pretend that everyone is either an evil slaver deserving to die, or a hapless abused slave awaiting their invasion with open arms. That is most assuredly not the case. In fact, such cases are far and few between.
Many Matari pod-pilots joining the war have suffered some personal (real or imagined) grievance at the hands of some slave holder in the past. Traumatized as they are, they tend to project their problems outwards in the form of aggression and bloodlust. I rather they turned inward and ask God for help rather than merely attempting to traumatize yet more people.
I would prefer it if they gave up their fight and turned themselves in, but will remain steadfast in defense of the empire if they continue their unprovoked aggression.
Matari heathens: standing in pools of slaver blood will only diminish your anger and pain for a moment, embracing God will allow you to get rid of them forever. ____

Pilot Bloodbird. I have decided to carry out my idea to have some of my house slaves and retainers tell their stories. Perhaps this will enlighten others to some of the conditions in the Empire.
To those that would cry out that this is some stunt on my part, know I am not doing this to promote slavery in any shape or form. I am simply tired of seeing the entirety of the Empire painted as villains and monsters.
Most Amarrians see the Matari as barely more than savages, fit only for Reclaiming and subjugation. Many of the Matari claim to be enlightened and to hold some kind of moral high ground. Maybe they do. But when you blame everyone in my culture for the excesses of a relative few, and call for our death and the destruction of our way of life in all its shapes and forms, you become no better then those you seek to oppose. You are then no better than the Amarrians that see your culture as sub-human and worthless.
Hopefully if you all can see what it is like in the Empire for some, then you might come to realize that the Empire is like any other nation, with both its good and bad aspects.
The choice is yours. I will have three of my people tell their stories, in their own words. Maybe they can speak for the Empire, where I cannot.
God grant you all peace and comfort in times of need.

Why is it that the Amarrian capsuleers always say that the it's a minority of 'other' Amarr who are 'bad' slavers whilst they themselves are paragons of virtue?
FACT: Vitoc is used on world populations FACT: Vitoc induces euphoria and makes those addicted to it more compliant and subservient
This sick story, and their continuing attempts to use those they've enslaved as hostages to hide behind, should fool no rational, informed person.

Mr. Bloodbird, I do not consider this a bookclub. If you want to play literary critic, please take it to another forum. ____

A little... melodramatic for my tastes, but an important message nonetheless. -

I think you might be mistaking me here. I don't want to play literary critic, I wanted a simple answer to a simple question:
The depicted slave-girl, is she of Ni-kunni origin as I suspect or is she of some other bloodline?
If no, what bloodline is she?
No, this is not a bookclub, and I never said or acted like, it was. Making an entirely new tread to ask a simple question is simply wasteful.
I'm still waiting for an answer, if you would be so kind as to offer it.

I believe you need a reminder:

Either you believe my post is fictionial, or you are lying. I assumed the first, hence you were asking questions about something you consider a work of fiction, thus my book club comment. In both cases, I do not see any point in answering your questions. ____

I wonder what wonderful stories I could get captured slavers to perform if I drugged them and put guns to their heads. It's almost a shame I don't take prisoners.

Your telling me your story is NOT fiction? I assume then you have traveled to this planet and interviewed these people and heard the re-counted story from either the mother, or the child (last option being least likely) and then just re-printed it here with permission?
If not, it very much is fiction.
Also, to be frank: My initial reply was NOT sarcastic. I did enjoy it, merely for it's melodramiatic contents and the nostalgia it gave me seeing that picture.
The only reason I ever wanted to know was that the image reminded me of a picture of a friend I had, once, it was taken shortly after her 14th birthday. Therefore, thanks to the simmilarities, I wondered if the girl was of Ni-kunni origin, thus I asked.
In any case, nevermind, I'll stop asking you. If you had told me you would have done me a small favor, of personal value only to drown my curiosity, for the moment. It's apparent though you intend to do no such thing so I'll just... well yeah, I'll just leave you alone.
Assuming your tale is 100% not fiction, give my regards to Marissa next time you see her and tell her she reminds me of a wonderful person that I knew once.
