I just recently came back to eve, starting a new character. Would enabling Factional Warfare ruin my experience, or is this meant for more experienced/skill-point players?
Are there any benefits for doing factional warfare?

This question is so vague my head hurts.
What experience are you looking for that you don't want ruined? What benefits are you expecting?
FW itself is not one of the top-ten ISK-making enterprises, that's for sure. Both new and old players participate, in (surprise!) different ways.
Best advice is to try it for a month and then decide.

FW is a good way to get experience with small-scale PvP, in my opinion. Saying that it's 'for noobs' is a mistake; my experience is that the militias are filled with characters of widely varying skill levels (both in terms or SPs and player capabilities).
I'd say the primary advantage of FW for newer characters is that there is really a lot lower emphasis on high-end ships and modules than there is in most other aspects of EVE. While flying T2-equipped ships is certainly an advantage, I've seen many people having fun in a variety of hulls, down to fully-T1 frigates. Flying lower-end ships also reduces the impact on wallets, too.
The one trait that you need to be sure you have before enlisting is a willingness to risk ship loss. Assume you will lose ships. Probably many of them. If you don't like taking losses, don't PvP at all, let alone join the militia. And if you can't afford to replace your losses (often) then downgrade your selection of ships to something affordable.

10/10 great advice.
