Hello, I'm new to eve online and I wanted to ask what skills I should be training. I want to do both mining and combat, is that even possible? Or will I end up being gimp at mining and combat. But able to do both...

Depends on how much time you want to stick into it. Small railgun specialization will never go past level V, neither will mining. --- Braaaiiinnnsssssssssss |

If you want combat in a PvP form, then mining is a good way pay for the stuff you'll lose.
To start off a mining career train these first:
Mining V Refining V
Refinery Efficiency V/ OR IV with ore processing skills of your liking at V f.e Scordite processing V with RE at IV should provide perfect refining(?) But if you choose to mine all sorts of things, I highly recommend RE at V
if you train RE to V, you can manage with all [ore] processing skills at 3-4
Mining barges V and Astrogeology V asap so you can get yourself in to a barge and later in to an exhumer.
Mining upgrades is a good book to train as well, up to IV.
With these traned you're a professional miner making easy money to provide for yor PVP hobby.
if you plan on going missioning as your source of income, then the list is a lot bigger I'm afraid. I'm no expert on this one, so wait for additional info.

There are multiple guides to how to plan your skill training. The post above mine is a good start, but I strongly recommend you do your own study into the skills and seeing if they're part of what you want out of EVE.
Remember, EVE doesnt set the goals for you, its you who set the goals for yourself in EVE. Play like this, and you'll have lots of fun. -

You might want to train an Alt to be your miner. Then you can start with a character with beginning skills that get you part of the way there.
The poster who gave the lowdown on mining skills is dead on to make you an effective miner.
This will take awhile if you have just one account, as you can only train one character at a time.
Do some research on which race gives the best prospector mining/processing/refining skill mix at the onset.
Good luck, mining can be a great break from mission running and requires a bit of finesse to best utilize your time out in the 'roid belts.
YOU'VE NEVER ROCKED 'TIL YOU'VE UNDOCKED. |
