The current system of rat spawning in belts, sitting there doing nothing until you come along and blow them up is a pretty boring game mechanic.
There is already a thread suggesting 'changing the specs of rats to make pve more like pvp in ship strength terms' here... http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=567610 . This thread is not to suggest changing NPC ship damage, but changes to how they spawn and operate. I have searched for similiar threads but not found them so please excuse me if this is a duplicate.
I suggest that NPC's behave slightly more like human players. By this I would suggest the following changes as a basis: - Rats gather together in groups - Rats warp between belts and move through stargates to nearby systems - Rats aggress rats from other factions, as well as players - Rats run away if outnumbered
The whole point of this would be to improve the fun of ratting and improve the players immersion in the eve universe. Imagine how cool it would be to warp to a belt and see an Angel group attacking a Serpentis group... or actually having to chase down a group of NPC pirates across a couple of systems.
This obviously has a higher CPU overhead for the servers than the current system, and I can see that the way the grid system works it would be difficult to implement. However, in my opinion, this one change would significantly improve the game and help to retain new players. After all, when you start the game you usually spend the first month or two making money out in the belts, mining and ratting. A lot of my friends quickly realised what a basic and tedius process this is, and it's a core game mechanic!

Clearly you read the OP and considered it's points before posting.

If your bored of the usual rats not being a challenge in some way, perhaps try looking into Cosmos or find DED complexes. There are links in the Resource Thread in missions and Exploration channel. You'll find nice eye candy, nice drops and something different that you may have to think about - and if your not careful you will lose ships!

Rats should at least warp in instead of spawning.
The whole popup out of nowhere stuff really demolishes immersion and suspension of disbelief and would be an easy thing to fix. Or at the very very least have a decloak animation... anything... just something other than poping up out of nowhere.

Edited by: doobey on 19/07/2008 00:57:38 changing the way the rats spawn would make it harder for a 0.0 pvper to make some isk. making isk to replace pvp losses should be made easier, not harder. I couldn't think of anything worse than ratting and having to chase my tail around to catch dam rats. like I said before if you want to change rats to be more 'human for the pvp experience' why not do the real thing instead?
changing a game mechanic so carebears don't have to risk any ships to enjoy the pvp side of this game is not the answer.

If it turns out that ratters make less isk from the proposed changes the bounties can simply be increased to compensate. The intention would not be to slow or hinder anyone from making money, just to give the rats slightly more intelligence than a lemming, thereby improving this aspect of the eve universe.

Amazing how often being a 0.0 alliance poster in a forum equates to an inability to read, an immediate assumption that everyone else is a carebear and doesn't appreciate PvP, and a focus on their own personal goals rather than the entire game. (Apologies to those it doesn't apply to, I don't like making generalisations but after the nth post it gets on your nerves).
If you had taken the time and trouble to read his post, he proposes that rats are tougher, not easier. Making missions and ratting closer to PvP should be a number one goal for CCP, because at the moment it's a) too easy, b) teaches the wrong way to play, c) means you have to fit for missions instead of PvP, due to b).
It's a no-brainer in my view. If ISK is what you seek, try mining, it's nice and consistent and very profitable... Alternatively there could easily be more than enough rats to go around and still have them be brighter. ___ My views may not represent those of my corporation or alliance, which is why I never get invited to those diplomatic parties... |
