If you are talking Movies that changed something for SciFi
Someone suggested Terminator 2 for it's CGI work I would instead use The Abyss. It used all the same CGI tech, in fact this was why James Cameron made it, to prove the the technology would work on the big screen. It is also a pretty good movie.
Planet of the Apes (the Original) this is possibly the earliest SciFi fall of man rise of the XXX movie.
I would also have to agree with adding Akira ... it was the start of the Managa SciFi genre
Escape from New York. It was one of those classic cult SciFi movies ... not huge SciFI but still SciFi.
I am surprised to see the following not on the list. Rocky Horror Picture Show - I mean Come On! How can this not be genre defining ... Dark City - Dark twisty, good guy is the bad guy THX1138 - Go watch it now ....

Ghost in the Shell should definately be included. Not because of it's novelty factor, but because it's one of the purest SciFi movies to have ever been made.
Yes, it's based on a comic, but that doesn't detract from it's value.

So many reply so much to type....
J.. my friend J.... You are trying hard, I am swaying in and out on this one... Think I will have to dig out my video.. I leave it to the popular vote... Is Dark Star Genre Defining Sci Fi or not
I think it is pretty convince that we missed of Dark City and that should be there.
Slade Trillgon - Videodrome, I agree I think this should be include, but convince me. What else to it be compared to
CCP Lingorm (sigh dev.. I feel luck, or should that be unlucky)
Akira / Ghost in the Shell is one debate I will also leave to the masses. What do you lot think ? Are they different enough to both be included ?
THX1138 - My opinion No.. Rocky Horror Picture Show - I counter with The Little Shop

Arvald - Star Trek - The question here is did ST film add anything to the movies, cos I dont think so.
Plumpy McPudding - Howard the Duck - I need to see this to match it to Plan 9 I think but I cant remeber how many trolls there were in this movie

I will start killing innocent kittens if GITS (ghost in the shell) is not added... the thought alone makes me drew and want to watch it... but I really shouldn't do that for the 15th or something time.
Why is GITS so important for sci fi? For one it's story is so solid and powerfull that you would doubt even the best movies of today. Yes it is animation but it is in fact really good animation, especially the second movie. And for me it has changed my view of how we look at ourselves as human beings... I recon thats pretty damn awesome if a move, story, can do that to you.

I'm not sure 5th element should be on that list. Awsome movie, just not something that I would compare other movies to.

Paul Verhoeven's wonders could well be added i think.
Robocop, recall, starship troopers.
Plan 9 ect and many other cheeseball movies from 70's and early 80's might be funny now, but holding it down with class to define the genre, Verhoeven.... hard to belive robocop is 20 something years old!!!
Nice to see the day the earth stood still, and forbidden planet in that list though, both those were two of my first thoughts:) ______

Edited by: CCP Lingorm on 24/07/2008 10:10:38 I take your little shop of horrors and counter with the following.
It is not SciFi ... Horror yes (funny hell yes) but it is just about a very large carnivorous plant. It is set in it's current time period (for both versions) and the plant is not an alien or genetic experiment ... from memory Seymour creates it from basic cross breading.
Yes it predates Rocky Horror, but Rocky Horror is definitely SciFi (besides Richard O'Brien was born just down the road from my home town *grin*).
THX1138 (1971) - Predates Logan's Run (1976) and deals with similar themes as Logan's Run and A Clockwork Orange (Corporate Control, Population Control, Though Control etc)

It's a sad day when a good sci-fi movie can't just be a good sci-fi movie, it also has to go in a sub-genre.
I do hope you have nothing to do with filmmaking as obsessing over what goes in which box would automatically make something suck so bad one would think it was on Fox.

I think it's probably more gender defining than it is genre defining.

Ok time to get caught up... appologies if I miss you.
sg3s - The Ghost in the Shell debate... I am convince, included.
Amandin Adouin - I wanted to put Tron on but it is was overcome by Matrix in the debate.
Galk - Robocop, maybe maybe
CCP Lingorm - hehe that was me being ebil.. Rocky is in, but Not THX1138 classic scifi but done better.
Wendat Huron - Quote: It's a sad day when a good sci-fi movie can't just be a good sci-fi movie, it also has to go in a sub-genre
I agree, I am not saying good movies here, just movies that are classics of their type. I love good, bad sci fi ... even Star trek

I'd also like to add some like Aurora, Mission to Mars.
Yes... I know they are terrible films, but what was asked here was genre defining, and to be frank you need to define the bottom area of the genre too.
