Nah, not vapourware... just heavilydelayedoware You know, somewhere between Starcraft and Duke Nukem Forever ?
Still, Infinity has several heavily distinguishing features from EVE : * no skill training - everything is based on wealth and wealth alone - if it's going to be any good, farming will be RAMPANT * twitch-based gameplay - think joystick control, Star Wars X-Wing style combat - any lag whatsoever (and you can bet there WILL be heavy lag if it will become popular) will mean a severely diminished game experience * storyline-driven gameplay as oposed to sandbox-based gameplay - which is both good or bad, depending on what you prefer * the galaxy travel method will mean people will cluster heavily in "NPC populated space" to interact, and will be virtualy untouchable anywhere else due to the sheer scale of the universe (chance to actually FIND and do something to somebody who just headed off... minimal or non-existant)
Oh well, at least from what I followed. Personally, I really hope they actually manage to launch. All those grindtastic, instant-gratification and twitch-gameplay oriented people and their kind are better off leaving EVE and never returning again.

yer I just looked at the screenshots of one of the devs office area, looked more like a room at his home. I got the feeling like they did not have offices or that they had so few devs that they did not need offfices.

Because it's taking so long. And who said I didn't consider EVE "heavilydelayedoware" too ? I mean, for god's sake, look at the expansions and the patches, I couldn't find a better example of delayoware if I tried !

And exactly HOW am I "dissing" Infinity ? I'm just saying it's not my taste of game, and that if launched, it would probably attract a big part of the crowd I don't like having around in EVE.

One programmer. However there are 5 DEV's and about 10-20 content contributors in competition to get their work into the game.
What I have contributed so far:
Lynx
Hauler
T-Y9
Those are renders of normal mapped low poly models.
I think it has potential. Give it the 8 years EVE had b4 its launch and we will see. ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

One programmer.
One programmer that does this on his spare time. He does have a full-time job doing some graphics programming related stuff, plus he's involved in some other projects.
Still, he manages to put in 50h of work on infinity per week. At least once in a while. --- Lasiverin Dark > Is everyone here allied? Red Knight > we are allied by our zombie like ability to ***** missions

I think if you were to visit the Infinity website once in a while and get to know the designer of the game, you'd find that he is quite a level headed person.
No one knows how this game will turn out, but assuming that it's going to be vaporware or the lead DEV is another Derek Smart is short sighted at best...

Infinity has been in development for a lot longer than that. I first heard about it in 2004 on the EnB boards, and it was a fair way into development at that time. I'm pretty sure the alpha came out 3 years ago.

Oh I was commenting on the game, not the developer.
Project seems tremendously overambitious considering what time/resources he has. Now in BC3000ADs case Derek got past that by skipping corners and doing a half-assed job on everything and calling them 'features' (like, yes you can land on planets, no there isn't anything to do there, your gun is a lego brick and the only sound effect is 'unf unf')
Soooo yes you can blame me for being skeptical ...

You are smearing a game that is in its early developmental stages. Your comment about the "types of players" you don't want around in EVE is a smear. Like EVE is above those types of players. Your posts have always reeked with that type of elitism.
Oh, I'm sorry for liking Master of Orion 2, Civilisation and Heroes of Might and Magic better than Quake, Descent and Half-Life. They're all awesome games, but they're completely different styles. And attract completely different types of people.
I know for sure I wouldn't want to play EVE for long alongside people that didn't love MoO/Civ/HoMM but go all giddy about the others. Not that they would be "inferior people" or anything like that, but they TRY to play EVE and *TURN* it into something which EVE is not and isn't supposed to be, which ends up annoying the hell out of me, and I'd wish they'd just find ANOTHER game much more to their liking and just LEFT.
Don't get me wrong, when Infinity comes out, I *will* play it too, whenever I feel like a short twitch gaming session... which is, not that often, but still every now and then. Yes, the combat prototype looks great already ; yes, the gameplay is somewhat nice, but no, I don't like it all that much, however there's nothing else comparable out there at the moment ; yes, the game could end up being great, and the dev might even be a freaking genius for all I care, but since the STYLE is not my prefered taste, I don't really care about it all that much. Clear enough now ?

I should have said this. There's simply no way that a single person can make profitable game that isn't Flash-based or some other retro form in this day and age. Many games spend more on advertising than most did on their whole budget just a few years ago.

I'm really impresed by the level of assumption in that comment.
I also started playing eve about 7 months after release... I also happen to have been around the forums watching Eve grow since late 2000. (I simply didn't sign up at first because I had moved house and was'nt online)
Really want to continue making assumptions like that, before making yourself look daft?
Anyway on the OP's comment, I'm really not sure. Infinity is an interesting technical exercise in scalability, but it jumps out at me as being a technical capability demo with a game patched on top, rather than a game with interesting tech.
though the original comment also makes me wonder, what other sci-fi mmos are there out online? Tabula Rasa is in freefall toward cardiac arrest, SWG was murdered by its own developers, Planetside went the way of the dodo with Neocron, and I cant think of any others available just now...

Released : Anarchy Online, Jumpgate, Tabula Rasa, DarkSpace, SWG, Planetside (neither looking particularly good) Uncertain status : the Star Trek MMO (probably cancelled), the Serenity//Firefly MMO (vague news only) Upcoming (this year?) : Jumpgate Evolution, Stargate Worlds (and some other one I forget about, so can't be that good) Later : Earthrise, Infinity (both potentially very promising, but then again, I'd rather wait for the finished product first)

Imho, it will be delayed so much that it will be partially obsolete when it'll launch.
If you want to look at a real candidate, look up Earthrise, because it target the exact same player segment, and stole a lot of Eve's good ideas. ------------------------------------------

Black Prophecy could also be one to watch.
Looks a little like Eve and also Jumpgate, and they have released the first glimpse of it with a video teaser on their website - www.black-prophecy.com/
There is also a beta sign up now, so it must be progressing, but i think this one is a way out yet, probably after JGE.
I personally hope both JGE and BP and later Infinity are a great success, as this will make sure CCP have competition, and that can only be a good thing for us, the paying customer.
