Edited by: Hydro Flow on 20/07/2008 04:08:33 I recently bought a new pc and installed Vista. My old pc is running XP and I need to get some programs and files to my new pc.
But my XP was a hacked version and I dont have a burner on the xp system so I'm curious as to how I can get some files and programs to my new Vista PC(some programs are also ummm....free)?

Um, how about...wait for it...hooking up all of your PCs to a local network and transferring files directly instead of uploading them on the internet so you can download them on another PC in the same room?
If that's not an option, just use an external hard drive or some kind of mobile storage.

Uninstall Vista, reinstall cracked XP.
Not necessarily the answer to the actual question you actually asked, but good advice all the same. ------

why the **** bother if you've a lan?
I mean, OP, you don't have two PCs in the same room, not connected in any way, right?

Funnily enough, I do. I have three PCs, two of which are running XP and the third running Ubuntu, and they're all hooked up to my router. Despite my best efforts, the XP boxes just refuse to network with each other in any way. They'll both connect to my Linux box fine, and my Linux box will connect with both of them fine, but for the love of mercy can I get those XP boxes to pay attention to each other.
I just use the Linux box as a sort of middle-man for file transfers. Still a pain though. ------

For some reason, that is the same experience I have had with XP for any kind of network service. It's a bit like black magic where you plug in the network cable, hope it finds the other computer. Some times it will and will work for some time. But then it will eventually break.
At that point your only option is to try and play with some wizards in the blind, and hope it will eventually work.

PROTIP: Use linksys routers. I've had similar trouble for the two days I've used the condensed pile of shit conveniently concentrated in the form of a router made by the ****wads who call themselves Belkin. For some reason, I'd see my whole network from my Suse print server, but I couldn't see shit from any of my other PCs, thereby rendering the print server useless and the router a piece of crap. Linksys, has, to day, worked fine every time I've plugged the thing in and set it up properly.

Both PCs are in the same room, both hooked up to the same router. But I cant for whatever reason connect the too. It asks me to insert my XP disk(which i dont have).
The whole reason XP was a hacked copy was bc my cousin thought it would better to do it that way so I wouldnt have to buy it myself. Thought I knew what he was doing, but its been a pain in my side ever since.
I have a few programs that are free and dont want to go through the hassle of refinding them free or paying out the ass for them. Thought it would be easier finding a site to upload them to. |

Router should double-up as a switch anyway. Usual exceptions to that are those pieces of crap your ISP send you with USB ports on them
But most should work without a hitch TBH so long as you didn't forget to turn off your firewalls ...
