Ok, a couple things here:
1) As at least one other person mentioned; If your beer is bitter, you are drinking the WRONG beer! Try some high-end German beer, some Micro-brew beer, or a Sam Adams. Trust me, you won't find them bitter. If for some reason you still find them bitter, then you have an overactive sweet tooth and I'd recommend you switch to Lambic style beers.
2) Obviously the "Helping ugly guys/girls get laid" angle can't be overstated, particularly when talking about the mass consumption of cheap crappy beer on Spring Break. (Beer goggles ain't bottle bottoms you know.)
3) It's also a matter of changing and maturing palates. A Little known fact is that the Sense of Taste is the ONLY of the five senses that actually becomes MORE acute with age, rather than starting out great and slowly degrading. Essentially an older, more experienced person can taste a broader range of flavors than someone younger can. This means that foods which tasted "yucky" when we were kids are actually quite delicious when we get older, because we can taste and appreciate the flavor nuances that we missed as kids.
Hope that helps.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with vodka as long as you drink it clean! Brand matters ofc, but even Vanlig Vodka is A-OK without blending it with anything.

One comment: Disgusting, even when mixed only 20% Vodka 80% whatever I find it dreadful!

Everyone that tasted beer the first time found it to be bitter, right? So why did you people persist?
Same goes very cigarettes. I, personally, think both are a huge money sink and nasty. My believe is it's a lazyman's way to get a high. Why don't you(people) go work out, or ride a mountain bike/ATV. That kind of stuff makes me feel great. Oh, almost forgot, that requires effort. Nothing like getting that instant reward with no effort.

OK OK, lets just tackle some of the beergotry (geddit?) going around in this thread.
1) There is nothing wrong with enjoying the odd pint with your friends. It does not make one a loser, or unsuccessful, or an addict. It is also not the same as binge drinking (which is idiotic, and thats coming from person who's been on the business end of a few). Only people with incredibly addictive or irresponsible personalities need worry about tee-totalling, unless its something they actually want to do for their own sake.
2) Lager is a type of beer. While most brands of American/British/Aussie lager are unbearable ditch water, there are a few gems out there. Some of the central European lagers are very decent and certainly don't suffer from being fizzy and cold, and I am partial to a drop of Cobra when in any Indian restaurants that serve it. That said, the best beers for me are cask-matured, cellar-temperature, and have a rich, deep colour. Artificial tap carbonation (as many of the mass-produced lagers practice) is a mortal sin, and ruins a perfectly good beer.
3) A good beer can be bitter, and many absolutely must be bitter. If I ordered a pint of my local brewery's "Best Bitter Beer" and it was sweet there would be something seriously amiss. The bitter flavour comes from the hops, and some styles of beer (IPAs spring to mind) are supposed to be extremely hoppy. Beers and their flavours vary as much as any other food or drink. The variation is part of what makes tasting beers fun.
4) Spirits and beer are two completely different things, and shouldn't be compared. I like beer, but I'm also a fan of Scotch, and I'm not averse to a bit of brandy (if it's good brandy and someone else is paying). But when you want beer you want beer, and when you want Scotch you want Scotch, and the two things just shouldn't be overlapping. ------

Nothing beats home-brewed beer.
Starting a new 5-gallon batch this weekend.
It's not that difficult to do, and fairly inexpensive to get set up.
If you like really good beer, give it a try. Or at least, make friends with someone who does. |

I echo patch's thoughts - he has hit the nail on the head.
I would add that IMO Alcohol in general should be an "aquired" taste. Beer is horible the first time you drink it. So is wine (red or white) and most spiits (I really mean true spirits like whiskey, gin, brandy - that sort of thing - not the artificially flavoured odd colored things you get these days).
What this does is self regulates young people into not getting too drunk at a young age as they simply can not drink enough. Eventually they either stop drinking or if they persist they aquire the taste for it. Alcopops are the devils spawn as strong alcohol is not supposed to taste like pop. they should all be banned and a huge social problem will vanish with them.

I don't taste bitter.
Apparently I miss out on the best part. But because of the above fact, I don't drink beer, or coffee, by choice. ***** Rule 27: 'Don't be afraid to be the first to resort to violence.' -The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Pirates [schlockmercenary.com] |

As a Brit, nothing annoys me more than asocial American teetoal internet geeks whining about how drinking is lame. I enjoyed beer the very first time I drunk it. I like nearly all beers. I like getting drunk. This is probably why I joined the Russkies, because so do they.
