Everyone that tasted beer the first time found it to be bitter, right? So why did you people persist?

Because it was fun to get a bit drunk of course. :)

Then you start liking the taste. It was the same with coffee for me. Took a while before I actually started to like the taste.

I do and have done for several years. Can't stand it with sugar(or milk), in fact I can't think of a single thing that I put sugar on or in.
I love a nice bit of bitter, 70%+ cocoa chocolate.

I fail to understand why people kept on drinking beer, if they didn't like it the first time. WHY do you keep on drinking something, if you don't like it? Social pressure?

I did like it the first time I tasted. I rarely drink it though, drunkness does nothing for me.

Eech, I can't stand sweetened coffee. Never have, not since my very first cup.

Bitter can be a good thing, and beer is tasty. The malt, the hops, the bitter-sweet loveliness...

But still, only drink what you like. If you don't like beer, I'm sure there are plenty of alcopops or such you can try...

Well I'm not so much a lager fan, and most of the 0% beers taste like a low quality lager. Nothing against 0% beers in principle, though. Just a matter of taste.

People like beer because it tastes good. Do we really need any other reason? And the people who think it tastes horrible, you've obviously been drinking the wrong sort of beer.

Other way round for me - stopped drinking whiskey when I threw up over a taxi driver a couple of hours after eating spaghetti bolognese. Imagine the scene with an irate taxi driver with a head full of half digested spaghetti dangling over his head.

Now I stick to the odd cold glass of beer after a hard day's work.

your cravings must change as your metabolism slows down. I remember when I was around 6 thinking tomatoes, honey etc were bitter and disgusting, now they're sweet and delicious. Same for dark chocolate, strong cheeses, black coffee, even tea.

Wrote a long post but then deleted it as it began to derail itself.

So, all I'm going to say is, I really like beer but I don't really think it's bitter. And even for things that are bitter (like the strong black coffee I drink around the clock)... It's an acquired taste, so get used to it! Razz Or don't, we all have our personal preferences.

Just because something initially puts you off doesn't mean that you can't learn to appreciate it, and addiction or peer pressure needn't have anything to do with it.

Also: Soda is the only sweetened thing I can bear drinking. Tea with sugar/honey, alcoholic drinks... blegh

Given the choice on taste alone I'd go for soft drinks or juice above beer.

However that doesn't stop me drinking it.

Alcohol & taste wise, I like the new Pear ciders that are appearing, Weissbeers (Hoegarten etc.), and have recently become partial to Guinness (though I hated the stuff when I tried it in my early twenties)

Have never got on with any spirits apart from Amaretto which I stick into coffee given half a chance.

I quite like a gin & tonic too.

However, being a normal bloke from Lahndaan, I drink lager most of the time, so generally Carlsberg or something around the 4.5-5% mark.

Oh yeah, I bloody hate Wife Beater (Stella Artois) and the silly Tennents Super and Carlsberg Special Brew strength lagers (something bad happened during the 1994 world cup!).

Seeing as its basically impossible to get me drunk (and trust me, alot of wallets have been emptied trying) it would have to be the taste. I just happen to like the taste of alcohol and bitter beer provides a nice variation to that taste.

Also it has nothing to do with older people liking more bitter stuff. My favourite chocolate has been dark chocolate since the age of like 6.

People have different tastes. I'm not much of a drinker but a friend of mine claims he loved the taste of beer the first time he tasted it. He's a bit of a lush though. :) Personally I don't like beer unless its so cold I can't really taste it. For taste I usually go for hard lemonades, fruity stuff like that. For pure drunkeness I usually just drink some a vodka/rum/etc mixed with something. It's usually a cheaper means-to-an-end.

Just in case there is some confusion with our foreign friends -- 'Beer' is a non carbonated, usually dark coloured, bitter tasting alcoholic drink. Beer is also known as 'bitter' as in "i'll have a pint of bitter" or Ale "i'll have a real ale please mein host *hiccup*" or Stout as in "give us a guiness". The great thing about beer is that, unlike its 'lager' conterpart (lager is carbonated, usually amber coloured - like aussie Fosters, Carlsburgs, Buds and is served cold) is that it sits in your stomach and keeps on pushing out the alcaholic content. Carbonated cold beers makes you want to visit the loo all night long.
The best way to get wasted is to visit a real ale festival and try all those available. 'Real' Ales tend to have stupid names so you can chuckle with your bearded, adanoid sounding, nerdy friends, listen to folk music and pretend you are in touch with Olde Worlde England.
The best bitter in the world is Brains SA (means 'Strong Ale' but is nicknamed Skull Attack). 5 pints of SA and you wont know what happened that night and isnt that a peculier rash around your genitals? I know there will be some who disagree about Brains SA but I dont care. Its the best there is, bar none!

It's the safest means to get wasted. The hard stuff makes me want to sort things out, one way or another. Wine makes me want to make out or sleep, depending on color.

Beer just makes me want to sit around being drunk and enjoy my shrinking surroundings till it's just me in my bubble.

My experience has been the opposite, but that's the problem with generalisations I guess. Post not in form of x proportional to y, pyramid over. I liked that first comeback BTW, that was good.

Danton did it better, and you don't do yourself any favours by posting this after his far far better comeback.

For me I got started drinking beer due to simple economics: When I turned 19 my dad started buying my beer, so I didn't complain and drank that. Lately I've been trying other brands, and Asahi is some good stuff, especially in the 640ml bottles. Normally at home I drink Vodka, but I'm out and haven't bothered to hit the liquor store yet.

As for coffee, I started out drinking triple triple, then double double then finally black because I couldn't be bothered to keep adding sugar, and there was never cream at home, milk does do it. Thought I still drink my Tims double double.
