I'm looking for something to fit the niche I'm trying to fill and I'm not sure exactly what that is (the niche or the best ship for it). Once I'm ready for it, I'm going to be grouping with some folks that have various Battleships and the like already so I'm looking for a combat ship (Gallente preferably as training other race ships is going to add significant time to what I'm aiming for) that's not really the tank but can still deal a lot of damage. We're aiming for being able to do level 3 and 4 missions, so I'd need a more advance ship than what I'm currently running.
At this point I'd prefer to stray away from a Drone heavy ship If I can avoid it as I've not yet trained the skills for it. I'm currently working on outfitting my Assault Ship accordingly so I'm currently training up my Navigation and Gunnery skills; just trying to figure out what ship to work for next after this one.
I've been thinking about going towards the Heavy Assault Ships, but I keep reading that the Deimos isn't that great (and considering I'd rather avoid Drones for the time being, that'd be my best option in that department I do believe).
Any recommendations?

Depends how you play the game. If you don't like drones then you need something that can hit hard. So go for blasters. Rails and missiles work well with drones (you shoot from far and squash anyone who comes too close with the drones). Blasters melt faces when you get up and personal. I almost accidentally killed my corp mate when we we're testing weapons...before he got his targetting lock i had already melted his shield and was well ahead on his hull already :D So, love blasters ;)

So you basically want us to give you a specific answer to a question that states: I want to fill a niche in small gang warfare, but I have no details on the ships I would be flying with or the niche I would like to fill. I prefer gallente and no drones. Um, more specifics would be required.

Well you want a niche. Then the Ranis is for you. Most small gang never have enough good inty pilots. The blaster ranis is gold.

Yup. The ranis goes doesn clawing and biting...and it hurts all the way. Even the skratches hurt! When the ranis that is attacking you goes into structure...don't think you are winning...that's about the point where you start loosing...
