If you read the official Empyrean Age book, you learn that selfdestruct is basically turning off the containment fields on your ship's engine reactor and the plasma vents and destroys the ship. So, he wasn't far off at all.

The cool thing about EvE Online isn't self destructing, it's showing everyone online that I did.

What do you think self-destruct is for? It's a valid tactic, like salvaging someone's wreck.

Never said wait 10 minutes. Only said make sure you are ready before you leave period. Love it how people like to read between the lines with their own interpretations, human nature I guess.
Lol, speak for yourself. Read again what I wrote. I wasn't on about me, I was on about the target.

After reading a few posts in Endless Subversions old post, I saw written that he apparently liked to ransom also and if I look at self destructing purely from a pirates point of view, then self destructing your ship really does have a massive impact on you. However most pirates only ransom the pods don't they?
If you are a pirate, you make your ISK primarily by ransoming targets and looting their wrecks, you are denied both this way, plus much more.
A timer was suggested for the countdown of the ship destruction, I think in the case of ransoming, the moment you try to self destruct that's it, they'll know not to ransom you and so they won't. I really do think each ship should have a different self destruct time and I would disagree with the timer, not completely though. It could be a great implementation.
There are too many different circumstances that are agreeable for self destruction and otherwise. It makes it difficult to agree to allow loot drops in some circumstances, but if each ship class had it's own set amount of time before it self destructs, then if you couldn't kill the target before it self destructed, it would be fair and square. So no loot drops this way though and a better explanation should be used for what happens when the ship self destructs if no loot is to be dropped. I would hate to see a skill where you can reduce the amount of time for self destruction though, if this did happen.
If you would like to see pirates get nerfed a little bit more, as I am sure that's the case, when you come out in your pod, if you get scrambled, you should be able to self destruct in 15 seconds, this would encourage the ransom to be held on your ship only and not your pod so much.
With a longer self destruct time though on your Battleship, you would have to hope you could hold on for longer, instead of knowing you could for just 2 minutes.

Ransoming is circumstantial. It depends on how many friends the target has close by, the value of the ship and fitting, having a ship/cargo scanner or not, etc.
Blowing up a Caldari Navy Raven that is probably faction or even officer fitted will not yield as much profit as the tasty ransom, as most of the loot will blow up with the ship.

Yes you are right and although I never specified, I was referring mainly to the many other ships that are available in the game, the more average ones with reasonable fittings, not those rare exceptions. So it does have a massive impact on you if more people were to self destruct. Not everyone comes through the gates with faction or officer fitted Ravens you know.

It is starting to sound as if someone is in danger of his\her keyboard shorting out from all the tears in this thread....I think that when I come back to playing fulltime I might just start SDing my ships if I can get this kind of whining from folks :) This is almost as good as Hate Mail, but not quite.

Self-destruct has been in game for 5 years and now you think its overpowered? People didnt have problems with it 2 years ago. Oh I know, back then we didnt have nano ships that does shit damage and takes no damage. And its not fair to pirates? When did eve become fair? Kills should be earned. Not given away freely. If you cant man up and fly a ship that does decent dmg and kill the target in time. You dont deserve that kill. I have been playing for 2 years, I never had problems with people self-destructing their ships. May be thats because I dont restrict myself to riskless nano ships. Try other ships for a change. You wouldnt have problems with self destruction. Get tech2 guns and fit some gyro stabs on that vagabond of yours. ______________________________________________________________

Only two people whine about self destruction. One flies a nano vagabond with no gyro stabs and tech1 guns and the other flies a nano curse. See the pattern here? ______________________________________________________________

Starting to wonder if that vaga pilot is maybe related to those 30-day-wonder battleship pilots we had running around lowsec a few years back getting gang-****d and whining on the forums....

Blah blah blah, attacking the nano ships again, don't bother replying in this thread again and that goes to anyone else attacking nano ships. This isn't about nano ships, so take your b*tch*ng elsewhere.

Self Destruct should kill pod.
That would stop a lot of rich mission runners from utilising the self destruct as they would loose their implants
