I know the basics of overheating mods, but on various posts i have read people have alluded to having an extra mod on one of the racks to absorb extra heat, and thus allow your critical mods to run overheated longer.
Could anyone explain properly please, and maybe give an example
Thanks

XoXoXoXo o - offlined irrelevant module X - overloading module
Obviously, works best with highslots and ships that have some "utility" or "secondary weapon" slots. Works best on Marauders or Sansha ships.

XoXoXoXo o - offlined gang/situational utility module. that can be onlined for use post-fight. X - overloading module

Edited by: Spectre3353 on 21/07/2008 18:15:37 Ok, so you've got 4 autocannons in your highs arranged like so:
A A A A
If you overheat them all, they spread that heat into the mods next to them. So each autocannon isn't only accumulating it's own heat, but some heat from the autocannon(s) next to it as well. Now imagine you have the same autocannons arranged in your highs but with an offlined smartbomb in between:
A A S A A
The smartbomb in the middle is offlined and absorbing heat and generating no heat by itself. Autocannons #2 and #4 will overheat slower because they are now surrounded by only one other overheated module as opposed to two. The smartbomb is a heatsink.
I am of course a complete newb who doesn't even have thermo I trained so take my explanation with a gigantic grain of salt. ----- http://evenewb.blogspot.com/

Hmm, good point. Although, onlining is such a drag, the 95% maxcap is always a big turn-off for me.

Does this work based on the "actual" module location when you pull up the fitting window, or based on the locations that the modules are in on your overview? So for example can I pull my armor plate up to my high slot and have that absorb my gun's heat?

I am pretty sure that overheating only occurs across "racks". So mods in high slots will only spread/absorb heat to other modules in the high rack.
As for putting armor plates in high slots, I don't know what game you are playing but that is not possible :) ----- http://evenewb.blogspot.com/

AFAIK, fiting screen location.
Yes, you can pull a plate on a highslot... but not in the fiting window

Click and drag in space, it'll move up there. It doesn't actually move the rack its on but allows you to change the hotkey it uses to activate and its position on the screen at least.
The reason I ask is because you can overload an entire rack with those little side buttons, and I think that button uses the in space/overview positioning rather than the actual fitting position.
