Cool :-)
For the technicans: Everything is done in PHP and MYSQL. I get the daily updates through the API Interface and update the database which is based on the trinity static exports with some current updates which i got from the eve board.
The maps are on the webpage are drawn using the XML Language SVG to describe the Map with their elements. I also use SVG+Javascript on the admin backend to move the systems around and rearrange them.
For the PDF Maps i'm using the fpdf libary for PHP and the normal php image commands for the generation for the image based maps. Everything is optimized for caching and traffic usage. For example the combined maps for Providence and Catch is only 39kb in size. I hope that doesn't kill my limits :-P I only generate the pdf/gif/svg files once and they'll get deleted when the database gets updated.
On the webserver side i'm working with apache and mod_rewrite to recongnize the given urls and the eve ingame browser. The EVE Ingame Browser gets redirected to the InGame Index page which will only list the GIF Images.
Btw. everything is dynamic. Every image, every map and every PDF document are generated automatically. It should be running alone :)

Actually, what i'm asking is, what layout engine are you using as a base? Or did you roll your own?
If you ever get into a problem with hosting evemail me, and we'll work something out.

In the database i've a table with x,y positions of the systems of every map. The layout engine is my own. I'm using the image/fpdf/svg stuff and say: draw round rectangle here, place text here, draw line from there to there. This is done for every system. The result will be the final map.
Everything is done by my own.
Currently i'm hosting the stuff on my own physical server in a datacenter in cologne. I think it should be running fine :-) It's not the only thing which is running on my server, but thanks for your offer :-)

Everything can still be improved, for mor information check the PDF version of the maps and print it out. You'll see the difference (Sec/Belts/Moons included). Yes rat types, etc can be added later, but are not the first goal of these maps.
There are other maps available that perhabs fits better for different usages and everybody is free to use or buy what he wants, i don't have a problem with it.
btw. this is still the first version of the map system. Perhabs i'll create other combined maps later when i've the time or see the need.

Edited by: Wollari on 22/07/2008 16:34:31 If only some specific regions are hard to read i can try to rearrange them better. If it's the complete way how i generate the map (every system a rounded rectangle) then i can't help :-/

Love the sarcasm :D
(fyi for those that missed it, this was one of the main complaints about the printed maps from eveon, a criticism I agree with).
Wollari, as tactical maps these are awesome, although I would like to see them a bit more "linear" (ie less diagonal lines) they work exactly as intended, great work. Reikoku Diplomatic Forums

i tried it, but sometimes the maps are highly branched which doesn't help to clear the constructs. Mostly the empire regions are hard to read because of the huge number of systems. the outer 0.0 regions are much easier to read and arrange.
But if you see a region and you see some potential how and where i can improve the maps please convo me.

Adding the daily sov info to 2D maps is a great idea and the way you've displayed the info is quite nice but I find the way you've laid the systems out counter-intuitive. I looked at 4 regions I know well and was lost in all of them. Even when I found particular systems I was looking for the systems round them were always in the opposite directions to where I expected them. It seems the rule you've used for where to put systems is "Where are they on the in-game map? Do the opposite".

In all honesty these maps are alot better as tactical map as they lay out the systems in a flat and logical way, clearly showing when there is a pipe, pocket etc. You just have to get used to them.

There's no rule i used. I just tried to unwire the systems and try to avoid overlapping jumps or overlapping systems. And i tried sometimes to keep constellations together when it's possible. When you think there's a better way for a particular region try to tell me how i can arrange it better, or i've to implement a way to give out the admin interface for selected regions to persons that knows it better then me. (and i'm realitve new to eve, just over 1 year and i was most of the time in the Providence/Catch region.)

you have 2 overlapping systems in lower right corner of the map
http://evemaps.dotlan.net/img/Domain.gif on this picture there is just to many systems so they are overlapping eachother almost everywhere. i think you need to make pic bigger to fit all systems

I agree. The overlaps make it difficult to determine whether or not the overlapping systems are indeed connected to each other. Perhaps you can include a minimum distance between the drawn systems?
Apart from that issue, the maps are fantastic. Keep up the good work.

I just fixed the positions of those 2 systems. (i just need to login to my admin system and move them around )

Okay, accepted. I just increased the image size for Domain and Metropolis. They have are now 1280x1024 in size instead of 1024x768. The problem with that size is, that they are unusable in the ingame browser because you don't have a horizontal scrollbar in your ingame browser. But as i said, if you really want to start working with them, use the PDF Versions either printed or in your favorite PDF Viewer to scroll and zoom around.
