Edited by: Heinkel facility on 26/07/2008 06:05:19 I don't know if I should or should not go buy a Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GT for 70$ / 60$ to replace my XFX 8600 GTS. (It's on sale for 1 day only)
I have seen this comparation between the 8600 GTS and 8800 GT: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3140&p=8
Should I buy the 8800 GT for the 70/60 $? Is it worth it to spend this money? I mean if I was upgrading I was looking at the 9800 GTX which is only 200$. I am afraid I would waste my money to buy the 8800 GT, even if it's on sale.
Is it worth it to buy it since it's a gigabyte brand (had no clue they do GPU's too)?
If you guys really think it's worth it, should I buy the:
Gigabyte GeForce 8800GT 700MHZ 256MB 1.4GHZ DDR3 PCI-E2.0 Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV DIRECTX10 Video Card - 70$
or
Gigabyte GeForce 8800GT 600MHZ 256MB 1.9GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDCP HDTV Out DIRECTX10 Video Card - 60$
Thank you very much.

Meh. Those two video cards are the only two I would buy ATM.
In fact, I DID buy one of them. Last month...

Only 256MB video memory? Yuck. Get a proper one with 512MB. Or get a HD4850 for pretty much the same price and vastly greater performance. __________________________

While we're on the topic, could anyone recomend a CHEAP (I'm a broke-ass grad student) GFX card that would run the premium client and support dual monitors? ---------------- Ambulation Answers

Optimal choice would be the HD4850 for ú111 inc. V.A.T. If that's too high, try an HD3650 for ú48 inc. V.A.T. Those prices are from www.overclockers.co.uk.. Both will run the premium client and support dual monitors. The more expensive one just happens to run it a lot better. __________________________

Getting a ATI HD4850 won't be much more expensive then one of those and they give better performance.

My apologies for my first post, when I read the thread the OP was blank lol.
Anyway, I'd have to agree with everyone else and say go ATI 4 series.

I try to support ATI as much as possible. ATI's cards are just as good as NVIDIA's, but ATI/AMD is a much cooler company and they are in serious trouble right now financially.
The corporate culture at NVIDIA is seriously F-CKED up. They're evil .
While AMD's business policies are based on good will and trying to make the world a better place. Plus they treat their employees extremely well (especially ATI).

Having worked for AMD's GPG (aka ATI) I can vouch for this. Best place I've ever worked - period. Not a big fan of nVidia to say the least. Aggressive and elitist. AMD does have a lot of humanist initiatives that people don't seem to be aware of (OLPC, for example) not to mention being the only hope for a competitive market.
That having been said ATI just doesn't have the high end cards to compete right now. Hector Ruiz (or Mr. Toad to me), the acquisition, and other factors... I'd say ATI is loosing the horse race for now. ATI's more reliable with Vista, among other things but if you want a mega high end video card for EVE, nVidia is usually the way to go so you might want to buy one from them.
And I hope you choke on it ;)
j/k
(fyi if you have a Wii.. you have an ATI chip)

Wait a minute.. you're spending $70 on a VIDEO card? Does it come with a hamster wheel or is it just run by a Frenchman on a bicycle?
Go ATI if you want good/inexpensive. That's their niche.

It does seem somewhat on the low side for that type of video card. However, he was complaining about newegg not delivering abroad so I wonder if he actually meant ú not $. __________________________

mega hi-end and stupidly expensive, don't forget that part.
sure if money isn't a problem, NV is better, but many enthusiats prefer to spare a few bucks and have money to eat by the end of the month than spending sums in the values of 600$ or more, while you can save some 200$ and get the same performance, if not better.
(altho crossfire still needs improvement)
edit: you'll also won't be seeing such thing from ATI, since they decided to step away from the "monolith chip" model (develop hi-performance GPU and scale down from there), and instead going to the "mid-range development" where they instead develop fast and afordabble mid range GPU's and scale up or down thru there (noticeable on the 4850, wich was released before the 4870, while NV releases their hi-performance chips first and then scale down from there), thus decreasing development costs. ---
