Pretty much up till now, I've been gaining all the need information I need from ingame trough the forums, using really good ship set-ups someone else posted and slapping myself on the breast, telling myself "I'm so good. Those rats can't even scratch me!". Then I realise that I've only found the information and not actually made it myself. Not that it's anything bad. I found it on the forums, it's supposed to be found by others and use it and so on.
Anyways, now I believe I know enough to try my own stuff a couple of times and gain some real experience and possible crash and burn a lot. But just to begin working myself around one thing; What is the best tank for a missionrunning Raven? Shield or Armor tanking?
Thanks in advance -Ady

Mission runner Raven is shield tanked, unless you want to REALLY gimp your DPS and look like a fool in the process...
so for tank, in mids: XL Booster Shield Boost Amp 4x Racial Hardeners (for example: Blood Raiders: 2x EM , 2x Thermal)
Oh and plain old T2 stuff is enough. No need for anything fancy.

Speaketh the truth, for Gurista / Angel you can go with only 3 times hardeners and a Cap Recharger 2, Because there primary damage type you already have good base resists for kin/exp.
On Blood Raider / Sansha / use 4 hardeners.

Indeed, it should be:
1 x small armor repairer II, 2 x adaptive nano plating II, 1 x reactive nano plating II, 1 x damage control II
3 x Auxiliary nano pump rigs

If you are brand new to lvl 4 missions, drop a racial hardener for a Heavy Cap Booster to save your behind should you take more aggro than you expect. Just use it in emergencies, not as a crutch. __________________________________________________

Shield tanking is the best way to go for a couple reasons: 1) You don't have many low slots so using them for Tank versus damage is a silly move 2) You have more mid slots than low slots meaning you can fit a stronger sheild tank than armor tank anyway 3) You natively have more shield HP than armor HP meaning you can hanidly achieve a better effective hitpoint level tanking your shield versus your armor.
If you're new at the job using XL booster+Amp + 3 hardners (changed to reflect foes) + cap injector is a safe and relativly cheap bet. The injector can save your bacon if you do something stupid and need to keep that booster on for awhile.
Alternatively you can rig your Raven with Capacitor Control Circuits to increase the number of boosts a minute you can do - it's less good than the injector for those "aww hell" moments.
I personally just use Booster + Amp + 4 hardners +2 PDS. No rigs needed for the most part.

Edited by: Mahke on 28/07/2008 04:31:50 MY T2 MISSION RAVEN WAS EQUIPPED WITH:
6x ARBALEST CRUISE LAUNCHERS 1x SALVAGER 1x TRACTOR
1x XL SHIELD BOOSTER 1x BOOST AMP 1x INVULNERABILITY FIELD 2x RAT SPECIFIC HARDENERS 1x CAPACITOR RECHARGER
2x CPR 3X BCU
this is in all seriousness imo the best t2 setup. Can tank any level 4 (but does not perma, you got to micromanage, which on a few missions means using your armor as a buffer and repping afterward), fits 3 bcu's, and can loot+salvage en route during missions you don't intend to come back to with a dedicated ship.
edit: MY RAVEN HAD 3X CCC RIGS

Actually a armortanked Raven is pretty good in PVP. People will go wtf when they have to chew through a Raven that have 30K+ armor. --- It have always fallen to a few to sacrifice for the good of many

Hardeners are for serpentis rats. Basically 1 Invul at all times, 2x main damage type and 1x secondary (in this case, 2x heat and 1x kinetic).
Capacitor Flux Coils and Capacitor Power Relays really gimps your tank unless you use a full set of them. I dont really recommend them.
Perma tanking with a raven is unnecessary and overrated imo.

The original question was how to fit a Raven, not what's your fit.
1st: set a goal. This one is missioning i guess.
2nd: what do you need to achieve your goals? For missioning it's tank and damage. Speed would be useful sometimes. Ewar, agility - not really needed.
3rd: prioritize your goals. More damage or more tank? Common error is to put too much tank on Ravens - all those permarunning XL shield boosters fits with no damage mods are perfect example of overtanking. Mission rats don't deal max damage for the whole duration of the mission, so why would you need max tank for the whole duration? Active or passive tank? For Raven pve active tank is much better. BSes have long shield regen times, so passive tank is not that good. Besides: passive tanks are usually done with oversized shield extenders (large on cruiser / BC) and you can't do it on BS. Buffer tank, important for pvp is not that good on missions (as they take long time - long enough to use all buffer, while pvp is usually quick and brutal)
4th. Find the must-haves. For raven that's obviously a set of cruise launchers (or torpedoes for some missions). You want some damage, so damage mods could be considered must-haves too. For tank (active) shield booster and hardeners are must-haves. Shield boost amplifier could be considered another (non-penalty-stacked) invulnerability field for active tanking.
Now when you have your basic fit (launchers, damage mods, tank) just put in what seems usueful in the remaining slots - as much as your cpu & grid allows. For raven that's usually cap rechargers / cap boosters / more damage mods and tractor / salvager for highs. Add rigs to taste (CCC usually) and you're done.
The most important thing is to find the sweet spot between damage and tank. As your skills progress you'll find yourself overtanked, allowing to add more damage mods and do missions faster (more isk).
