Greetings to all.
I know i havent been around for quite some time and i understand you all pretty much hate me but... Theres a burning question im having difficulty answering. If youd take some time perhaps youd care to assist?
Question: A choice of morality, or a choice of fortune?
A common dilemma for all. Get rich, or get hated.
Youre given a choice of two contracts. Theyre both relatively easy kills. Go in, find a good spot, shoot, and run. Enough officials and personnell have been bribed, beaten, based or killed so that either crime will be largely ignored by law enforcement or government agencies. The setup will be cheap. 25 grand for a good weapon, 500 bucks for a case of hollow-point toxin-filled ammunition, 10 grand for a security uniform for your disguise, 20 grand to secure a viable escape and a further 5 grand for... expenses. As soon as the contract is done, you will very simply - vanish. You CANNOT kill both targets, and you WILL be executed if you attempt to claim both. Once one contract is fulfilled, the other will be of no use to anyone and it will be cancelled.
TARGET ONE
Your first target is worth Two and a half billion in cash. Enough to definitely catch your attention.
But there are serious consequences. Your target is loved by billions of people. By estimates, this persons death could spell the end for the government if anyone catches wind of why it was ordered. Massive civil upheaval and a potential for a galaxy-wide civil war. This could mean the deaths of millions. Opportunistic raiders, thieves, terrorists or even rival nations could take advantage and it would cost billions more lives, lives which can never be replaced. You have no issues here. You'll be paid, far away, forgotten, living in the lap of absolute luxury on the dream planet of your choosing for the rest of your and your familys days for generations to come.
Trading the lives of an entire nation, for a couple of bucks.
TARGET TWO
Your second target is only worth 180 million. A paltry sum of pocket change compared to the other contract.
Your target is loved by millions, but has a long list of serious crimes hes kept hidden from the public. This person has kept it secret, but upon his execution the documents will be released, spelling doom for hundreds of drug kingpins, terrorists and criminals, with ties to some of the highest echelons of many governments. The kill is easy. Shoot, run, paradise. You'll have elimenated a man that has been indirectly responsible for the slaughter of hundreds of thousands, a man whose funded terrorists and pirates to play his own game. You take this kill, and you'll be far away, forgotten, but not as rich or powerful as youd want to be. That paltry sum will dissipate very fast with the current market. All you have is the knowledge you ended th life of a truly evil man.
Saving the lives of millions while getting paid peanuts.
Either way you still make a healthy profit from your preparations. You get away basically scot free, even if youre caught.
Id like to make a personal note here. Knowing what ive seen in New Eden these past few years, and how so many people have succumbed to the need for hate and greed i estimate that 90% of those that read this will choose the first contract. You'll automatically say: "**** the nation, gimme my money!" It is true that i dont know most of you, nor will i ever get to know you, but im sorry. Ive seen too much to change my opinion of humanity. And i doubt i'll live long enough to change it anyway.
Im asking for the absolute truth.
What would be your choice?

If you had wanted a totally honest answer, you shouldn't have biased the question so much. As it stands, with the way the question is given context and framed, you have asked the following.
"Do you want to be a good guy, or a bad guy"
It is an oversimplification. There are no such black and white statements of morality, and in the case that such a moral case did exist, the line would be drawn much sooner at "Would you commit murder for money; y/n" |

Well, to put is simply as possible.
Go for the greed. The response from others is their own.
So take the big pay out and don't care about what happens after. Because, let's face it, you just lit the fuse that was already in place. Nobody cares to extinguish the fuse but instead heats up the flame more. Isn't that their own choice then?
Nobody cares how and if you live. So why would you bother with their reasons to kill themselves?

I remembered the question. Just didn't take the time to reply for a while.
But good to see the confused. Makes it easier to scout out those who keep less informed.

Not only is the dichotomy false in the sense that those are not mutually exclusive, it is also false in the sense that it is not really a dichotomy at all. Greed and altruism are far from the only human motivations possible.
Or toaster motivations, for that matter, since this was partly addressed to Tibs. I don't think Kuvakei himself is motivated by either, rather than revenge or hunger for power. |

It's only addressed to me because I responded to his original (rather wordy and rambling) question by doing pretty much the same as everyone else and saying that the world wasn't as black and white as his question implied. |

Self interest and altruism are both needed in everyday life.
One needs selflessness and altruism in order to exist within the fabric of society, and at the same time, some level of selfishness is required in order to stop oneself from just being a doormat. True wisdom lies in not trying to choose one or the other, but to walk the middle road between the two. |

But in the end it serves my own needs, so I am not putting their needs ahead of mine. I am just investing into it so my own needs get what they want.
There is no altruism. Every action people take are in some way serving their own needs in one or another way. Those who delude themselves into thinking this isn't true are far away from selfawareness.
The main reason I like Istvaan is that he never is dishonest about his ultimate goal. This doesn't mean I trust him. I know if a knife in my back furthers his goals he will gladly slam it in there. But being aware of that one can't deny that he is one of the rare people who are true to themselves.

Again.
So i'll simplify this for those that CANNOT read the meaning and just answer the ******* question.
For the good of the world, or for the good of greed?
Answer the damn question.
At the risk of quoting my dear Maman, "Both and at the same time neither. In all things, there should be moderation, as long as one remains the moderator."

The two options are really the same. In order to satisfy our infinite desires with our limited resources (achieve selfish goals) we must cooperate and act in harmony with each other (a single person cannot build an empire). Altruism arises when greed alone cannot advance the species sufficiently. Greed in turn arises when society cannot fulfill the selfish desires of the individual, and so the individual ventures out to innovate and do something new (which also helps advance the species). As with anything on the great wheel, selfishness and selflessness prevail in societies in a cyclical fashion, simply out of need (or perhaps nature).
With all of that being said, each individual may tend towards one or the other. I'd like to think I'm a basically altruistic person, but if I'm not then oh well. |
