As the title says, is it worth traning 15 days to be able to overheat stuff?
With all those bonuses it seems logical. But how long can a module last when overheated?

On its own, probably not until you're a pretty old character. Fortunately, the prerequisite skill is one virtually necessary for every ship in the game. Once you have the time to spend on Energy Management 5 - I'd advise combat characters do it between 5-10M SP, generally(it's a really good skill) - then do so, and then drop the cash on Thermodynamics too. You only need to train it to 1, fortunately, which means there's next to no cost once you have the requisite.
As for how long modules last, depends on the module. Some not very long, some dozens of cycles. For PvP, the answer is almost always "long enough". ------------------ Fix the forums! |

wait, so thermodynamics beyond lvl 1 have no effect? I thought they did in that they reduced overheating damage, or at least made the overheated modules last longer... -

I've never trained it past 1 to test it, but by the skill description the only purpose of getting it higher is to get access to heat on new modules, and all modules that can be overheated currently only require it at 1. I won't rule out there being a bonus, but if it exists, it's hidden. ------------------ Fix the forums! |

It does have an effect (reducing damage) and it's not hidden:
Quote: heat damage modifier -5 %

I think its worth it, at the very least for your tacklers to over heat for one cycle to catch somebody.
Those 15 days are for Energy Mangagement V I presume, one of the best support skills in the game. You just do not say no to having more cap in every single one of your ships. __________________________________________________

Very much so if you pvp, not so much if you dont. And higher levels of thermodynamics have a pronounced effect on how long you can overheat mods before heat becomes an issue. |

I'm not so sure. In marginal situations I think that overheating might save your ship, during missions - perhaps by overheating the highslots to kill the incoming DPS faster, perhaps by overheating the shield booster to temporarily improve the tank.
BTW, by "marginal situations" I mean essentially that you have screwed up. Perhaps by killing an extra trigger so that an extra respawn chain starts, perhaps by getting hung up on a structure, perhaps by missing one of the scrambling frigates so you can't run away, perhaps by not being aligned so it takes too long to warp out. It really doesn't matter. If you've ever spent any time running level 4, you've probably done all those.
It might also greatly speed up killing some NPCs; perhaps the Vengeance end boss is an example. Breaking this guy's tank is sometimes a bit difficult; if you can increase your DPS with overheated guns you might decrease the time and ammo use quite a lot. And in mission running time is money, and the less ammo used the better - especially if you are shooting faction or tech 2.

I doubt it's worth overheating guns/launchers in missions purely to kill rats faster because the cost of fixing your mods will exceed the isk you gain by being faster.

Well I've had thermodynamics for about a year I think, and while it *could* save you in a hairy mission, it's not worth training for just for that. |
