Returned after a many month break, and I remembered the main thing that always irked me about this game. Ship scale. When I moved from my crappy Bantam to Badger, I really couldn't tell a difference in size. When I went to my Cormorant and Caracel... I couldn't tell a difference in size. Anyone else realize this and wish there was a way to actually SEE the size of your ship? (aside from parking right next to someone else and comparing sizes that way)

When ambulation comes out, you should be able to walk around in your hangar and look at your ships that way...I think difference in scale will become significantly more obvious then. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

When I undock in a Merlin and have a raven looming over me I feel small.
But honestly being on non premium The stations still get to me. I heard they're bigger in premium.

Try this little trick.
zoom out normally so your ship is smallish but you can still see it. then hold down the right mouse button and aim th camera at something behind your ship, now also hold down the left mouse button and instead of just moving the camera it will zoom and show the real scale of what your looking at.
While I don't find many problems personally with scale even alone, I believe if things father away were more desaturated it would help to make the player fell like... woah my ship is big :P.

The fact that the hull of the Destroyers are virtually identical to the size of cruisers always bothered me, given the instapopping, non-tanking nature of the Destroyer class.
I also think that large weapon turrets badly need a big increase in size compared to medium turrets (they are practically identical.) When I unleash a salvo of artillery I want some graphic oomph to go with the damage oomph tbh.

Scale is totally messed up.
It shows in trailers but thers no real scale in the game. Differences in ship sizes need to be much bigger, and camera could have a hand too.
Stations need to be moved right up next to planets, so you get a station with an arc of planet taking up 25% of the screen there.
Stations should also be made about 5/10 times bigger.
Is it true that stations in premium are bigger? I never upgraded, to keep my performance.

Maybe (I can't remember, I haven't used classic graphics for sooo long), but they're still too small in my opinion.
EDIT: Ship scales are not iffy in actuality, it's just the camera that makes each ship look the same size when you are piloting one. ------

a way you can tell the difference, is to try not looking at your ship, look at another ship beside your ship, you get a massive size of scale when a shuttlecraft dissapears into your megathron's shadow, or undock yourself in a shuttle, and fly out
if you really want another good scale, do this in dodixie the fed navy assembly plant, i swear to god, every time i undock, theres 8754964164649873213103 battleships outside the station, you should have no trouble scaling your ship then, and if you want to go even more extreme, undock in your pod, or jettison a probe, get your ship close to it, then right click the probe > look at, and it will show you the probe, and your ship right next to it, that helps as well

There IS a sense of scale at some level. I once ejected from a BS while I was next to a Hyperion and a Dreadnought. HOLY SHIT. The sense of scale was amazing. Problem is, is that that was a pod. Once you get into frigates and stuff, its not that noticible.
Same thing with my first time seeing a titan. I was impressed at how big it was. but then I said, meh, its not THAT big.
CCP needs to make the size differances between the ships much bigger. Make a frigate tiny compared to a BS, and a titan stupidly big

How about this, motherships which are supposed to be able to carry multiple battleships in their maitenance array are not much bigger than the battleships they allegedly carry. Like the hyperion, inside the nyx, when the hyperion is half as long as the nyx and far wider. Etc.

A boeing 747 which is comparable to a rifter is no bigger than a thumbnail on your hand when you look at one flying at its normal altitude of 10-15km high.
hence its your camera thats giving you the finger on actual scale.

Speed usually tells me.
When you can zoom in and out as much as you can, and there's no stationary camera, your size doesn't change. Stop ooming in and out and you'll see the difference

A good way to get a sense of scale is to fly slowly (<100m/s) along the length of a battleship in a frig. It's really something.

Often when i undock in something like a rupture and a Maelstrom is parked outside i'm often taken back about how huge the other ship seems.
People asked about the size difference with premium and normal? Well stations are crap loads bigger as are stargates, i'm not sure if other ships sizes are any different though.

This is a far stranger thing than the whole camera issue. Looking at ye olde size comparison chart, a question that comes to mind is how on earth a Domi or Mega (both of which are quite tall) is supposed to fit inside the rather skinny Nyx…

Ive always imagined if the eve devs ever took a hard whack at graphics and display that the said ships attached to the hulls of the larger ships and the cargo limitation is acutally the threshhold of the connections. I mean if it was done this way there be a chance we can see entire groups of people being jumped with the ship to act as thier escort on arrival (would also make carriers useful invasion insertion tool once a cyno is established) but alas the lag monster would devour them whole.

It's all a matter of perspective. And Eve's engine fails spectacularly at this. As the above comparison chart shows, there's a LOT of difference between the ships that I never noticed until I saw it.
Sometimes you can get a notion of the differences, but you really have to go out of your way to do so. There's nothing inherent in the system that says, "This ship is much bigger/smaller than that one." When we get to that point, it'll be pretty awesome, and I mean that in it's most basic form.

Like a titan's jumpbridge perhaps?
Giving carriers the ability to "jumpbridge" would be insane tbh, and/or basically make them a Black Ops on steroids....
It'd be insanely overpowered for a ship of that pricerange to do that, and before you go "hey give'm a fuel bay", realize most operations where you need escorts etc will launch from a PoS, meaning corp hangars FULL of feul to cyno ships through.

Dude, your perspective to your ship shouldnt change.
Exit a station and fly CLOSE (very close) to other ships and zoom that camera in. Trust me, the scale will become VERY apparent then. ----------------- Friends Forever |
