The sky is always falling, problem is that it keeps regenerating itself on a molecular level. _______________ Pwett CEO, Founder, & Executor <Q> QUANT Hegemony

I see it both ways.
I think that in my lifetime (I'm 29 right now) we'll see cryonics/suspended animation become a 'real' field, advancements in genetics leading to a new superior generation that will be free from a lot of the baggage that ails *us*, sci-fi level biotech, etc. The people who don't jump on the bandwagon will remove themselves, they're not an issue.
I also believe that in 2100 there will be fewer people alive than there are right now - there's a lot of huge problems that aren't being dealt with right now that will start killing lots and lots of people before the world leadership pulls their heads out of their asses and deals with them.
Also if anyone does (or already has) come up with a recipe to beat death once and for all I doubt that person(s) will share it with very many people. ---

There is no spoon air. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

I don't believe in immortality. What happens when 6 billion peoples becomes immortal? We end up with kids that also gets immortal, and the biological circular systems will diminish because we soak up all off the resources which we normally give back when we're gonners.
I vouch for longer lives and extended youths. But death is a part of our life, and therefore must not be removed.
And hell I want the space to be like in Babylon 5. Jump gates, hyperspace, thirdspace, evil monster races, the first ones. Vorlons!!
Yes that will be nice *childish giggles while sitting in feedal position rooking back and forth*

If anyone here watches the science channel then you already know that, given the way organisms work, they could very well live for a VERY long time, if not forever.
There is NO pre-programmed death code in our cells. The only reason we age and then dye is the process in which the body coverts sugars into energy. Its the radicals given off by this process that destroy the cells ability to deal with with the damage done to DNA/RNA over time that kills us.
Mitochrodia are the keys in this whole process. They not only covert the sugar to cellular energy but they are also responsible for keeping the cell 'clean' of toxins. They are the only structure in the cells that have been observed NOT to age.!!
It has been said that if we could find a way to negate free-radicals or find a way to negate their dmg then there is no reason we couldn't live for 200...or more years.

Why would we upset the status quo and allow the 4-5 Billion poor people afford Immortality? I can imagine it would be fairly expensive and can see an "Immortality Mortgage, pays off in 100 years" sort of thing in the West.... Just being realistic here.

Not really allow as such, but the implications of "immortality" only being available in "the West" are significant.
If you think illegal immigrants are a problem now, how much worse do you think it would be in that situation?
Jealousy, resentment, lack of opportunity, and the poor people become willing recruits to any dictator who claims he could "take" immortality from the "West". Of course, doing so would destroy the infrastructure for immortality, but that's not something people would tell anyone.
So it would be war. All the time. And how many immortals (or potential immortals) would be willing to join the Forces? How many normal people do you think would sign up to protect immortals who aren't willing to protect themselves?
Immortality available to all means destruction of the planet. Immortality available to some means continual war, to keep the human swarms from overwhelming the immortals.
