I'm thinking about ordering this gfx card from the ATi home page.
Radeon 9600 SE 128mb AGP
Anyone using this card with EVE?
It's not on the supported list, nor the unsupported list for the game.
If you have this vid card, could you let me know how it works in EVE? Like does the sun shine through planets or anything stupid like that? Does it perform good with lots of ships on the screen (like fleet battles or events)?
Ok thanks.

Edited by: Andre Milvois on 30/05/2004 05:24:00 Using this card in my primary Game machine. (EVE, nascar2004, others) and am very satisfied with use. Defaulting at 12x10 rez all candy, frame rate smooth as silk. get the latest catalyst drivers BEFORE installing eve. As far as sun shining thru, that happens sometimes irregardless of vid card..that's a graphics glitch in eve.

Dont order from the ATI site, their prices are inflated. If you want to buy the card, check out online retailers for your particular country. If you live in Canada here are some great places to shop:
www.ncix.com www.vibecomputers.com (my favourite) www.tigerdirect.ca (.com if you live in the US)
Be aware that where ever you live, you are likely to find many retailers, be sure to research the one closest to you, and the one with the lowest price and price match it to the closest location to you.
Taken from the May 29th 2003 Devchat at EveGate . <Muaddid> Q: When will sentry gun and station and similar construction pods be introduced on the market? <Hellmar> we have various player owned entities already implemented. Sentry guns, power/shield generators, field repair mini-stations, mobile refineries. We are still working out the last tidbits of how they can be over taken, what is the penalty of having a sentry gun kill a n00b etc. and we have been a bit busy with plugging the holes that people have found.I would say that you'd start to see these items on the market in about 2-3 weeks, very expensive to begin with |

I checked all three of thoughs sites. They're all asking for more than the ATi price. One of them over 50 bucks more for the same thing.
I will look around. But so far ATi looks like the best place to buy. I've found some sites selling it for like half.. But how am I supposed to trust this crap. |

Edited by: khalum on 30/05/2004 09:36:25 For the love of God, DON'T buy the 9600SE! It's NOT worth it's price! A 9600Pro/9600XT is not much more expensive, but performs WAY better.
EDIT: OK, after looking at the webpages i must edit this.. JESUS CHRIST, you computerparts is expensive as hell over there!
9600XT @ vibeComputers.com = $233 9600XT here in Sweden = $161 ---

As khalum said dont get the SE version, its basically a handicapped version of the normal card with like half its piped turned off. Get a 9800 pro, best resonable priced card around. ----- Eris Discordia; I think the proper term is <3

If you can, go with the 9800se. You then have a 50/50 chance of softmoding it to a 9800pro. If the softmod fails then you can run it as a stock 9800se which is similar to the 9600's.
Softmoding will not damage the card should it not work and is just a matter of chaning drivers.
Bye for now, Roscoe

The 9600SE is quite slow. A TI4200 is about 2-3 times faster for just about 70 dollars. And a 9800 Pro is even faster, plus its DX9, and only about 200 bucks.

I would rather get the 9600SE now which is three times faster than my GeForce3, and get the 200 dollar card next year when it's only 50 bucks.

Its slower than a GeForce 3.
And for the same price you can get a GeForce 4 TI4200, which is about 2-3 times faster than the SE.
And the 9800 Pro isn't going to go down much, as it is already priced incredibly low.

Yeah don't buy the 9600se. pro's or XT's are far better, for a only a little more.
It is faster than a GeForce4 ti4200, even the ti4800. but not by a lot
However, the 256mb 9600pro sitting here does the job just fine, whereas my housemates using GeForce 4's (ti4200 and ti4800) both have the same problems with graphics. The missing billboards being the obvious one. NVidias drivers just don't seem to be up to it atm.
As far as drivers go, I've had no problems with any ATI Catalyst driver. ++++++++++++++++++++ CEO of the Space Munchkins. Fear my kneepads of allure!

More to the point, check out Toms Hardware Guide - VGA Charts for a good idea of whats a nice gpu and whats a bit sucky. Doesn't cover the latest cards, but as there not in general availability yet, who cares. ++++++++++++++++++++ CEO of the Space Munchkins. Fear my kneepads of allure!

ok first off.. I'm only willing to pay 100 to 150 bucks.. So throwing out a bunch of gfx cards that cost more than that is irrelevent.
Secondly.. My mobo is only 4x, so an 8x AGP card is out of the question.
Well the 9600SE is only a 64-Bit gfx card. So it's starting to really sound like crap. I'm probably going to go with the 9600Pro then.
This GeForce3 gfx card is so F'in old I can't even find it on a comparison chart.
I'm not interested in GeForce right now. No love for hardware with crappy drivers.
Guess I will go to the store and check them out. Buying the card for cheap on some unknown online site is also out of the question. I'm not just going to throw out CC information anywhere online with a good price tag.

Try Ebay, mate. You can find relativly unused cards on there for the cheap. Not as care free as buying a brand new one, but hey it's hardware, shouldn't have any issue with it anyway. And for the possibility of getting it half priced compared to a new card, it was worth it for me.
