I've recently acquired 100GB worth of every Babylon 5 movie, episode and spinoff ever aired. I'm very interested in the series, but I have no idea in what order to watch it all. I dread checking the wiki/imdb in fear of spoilers. The seasons and episodes are numbered, so that makes sense, but what about the movies and spinoffs? Could any other scifi geeks here help me out with this? Of course, any spoilers earn you an honorary spot on my against the wall when I take over - list.

Well,
As the films were all made after the series, imo its better to start with the pilot first episode
Kind like a mini tv film.
Then Series
1-5
Then any film
Notes : Membari war film one is the best of the films,
The spin off series are a bit meh meh, but still alrite as its B5.
Sadly your going to have to endure the poor cgi for the first few series but i hear they are redoing it all for the stevie-blu-ray version.
Hope that helps,
Enjoy alot of fleet fights (without the lag)

I saw the "In the Beginning" movie ages ago on TV, that was fairly good for someone like me who's seen like none of the series IMO. ...

Edited by: Mangala Solaris on 04/08/2008 08:19:43 HUGE B5 Fan here (Except Lost Tales, it doesnt have Gkar...), heres the watch order as I do them when I go through it all:
The Gathering Season 1 Season 2 Season 3 Season 4 (to Episode 5) Thirsdpace Season 4 (from Episode 6) In the Beginning - Historical angle, yet shows what is to come in Season 5 (Best place for it imo, as it provides series spoilers for alot of whats gone before as well as a glimpse into Season 5); Season 5 (upto & including Episode 21) River of Souls The Legend of the Rangers A Call to Arms Crusade Season 5 Episode 22 Sleeping in Light
Season 5 is very hit or miss, but done as I suggest above, it become easier to follow and has all possible gaps filled :)
Hope this helps. -------

At least B5 has a plot. With Star Trek, they just push the reset button at the beginning of each episode, and nothing that happens is referred to later on. Boring. __________________________

No problem here, I'm asocial. The only place of significant personal contact is the university I study at, which is pretty much a nerd/geek only place.
Also, I consider Star Trek to be a space opera, not sci-fi.

Except Deep Space 9. As long as you avoid the handfull of terrible filler episodes (Babylon 5 even had a few), DS9, specially from Season 4 onwards is awesome. Plus Ron. D. Moore wrote a ton of episodes.
Oh and never, ever, for any reason, watch Crusade. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

You will not discuss Star Trek in the context of a comparison with a serious sci-fi show.
Star Trek is a space opera that has little to nothing to do with actual science - it has atmospheric-like flight in space battle scenes, automagical FTL-travel with a downright ridiculous handvawium-unobtainium explanation, battleships that look more like deluxe cruise ships on the inside, OMG LAZERS (but no, we'll call them phasers because that's totally different and not as cliche), the ship systems violate just about every rule of thermodynamics and orbital mechanics, all vessels move at the speed of plot, etc...
I resent, I RAGE at shows/movies being filed under sci-fi just because they're set in space.

Yes, well I suspect the concept for DS9 was rather heavily influenced by B5. __________________________

These:
The Gathering Thirsdpace In the Beginning River of Souls The Legend of the Rangers A Call to Arms
All the movies for B5 are stand-alone pretty much, but as with anything related to such awesomeness they are better when taken in context. -------

Edited by: Adyriana on 04/08/2008 17:16:11 Well first I would say you start up with the movie "The Gathering" (The makeup and stage scenes will be a lot better later on), it covers some basic understandings about some things. Then you watch the 5 seasons. The other five movies you can watch after you've completed watching the series, since they don't add anything important to the storyline.
When you've done that, you can watch Crusade, which I personally don't recommend. The spin off can be looked as trying to mercilessly beat a retired person in the hopes that he will do something really fancy. But it doesn't.
Same goes for The Lost Tales. Sure it's really pretty and dramatic, but it doesn't add anything special to the storyline. Just another beat-up by the creators to check if something moves.
B5 is, atleast for me, in the category where you watch the entire series once. If you try to watch it more times you just ruins everything for yourself. But it really is a very good serie. The last episode in season 1 is probably the most dramatic episode. So much action, so little time...
Anyways enjoy it. I know I did ^^
EDIT: The Minbari shouldn't f***ing whine what he did to their flagship. It was a war dammit!

In The Beginning wasn't bad as the standalone stuff goes.
The rest though were generally balls. Crusade was ****ing horrendous.
The TV show was the thing and then only if you can cope with the cheesy acting and whatnot.

Babylon 5 was our last best hope for a decent sci fi tv show.....it didn't fail!
Be warned however...try not to skip season one, the acting in places is awful but there are some really key plot points to be had. Season 5 isn't as bad as people make out, it is still very good science fiction, BUT after the brutal non stop ride that is halfway through season 2 all the way to the end of season 4 it is a bit of a slow down, which in my opinon was good...sure Lockley isn't the best captain, but still some of the episodes in season 5 are still extrememly key and are not to be missed...look out for some brilliant speechs as well....

Everytime Gkar and Londo opens their mouth pure gold poors out of it. Though they're only shadows compared to Kosh
Sheridan: "Could you help me to understand you?" Kosh: "Can you help me to understand you?" Sheridan: "Well I can try . Is that what you want? In exchange of information? I tell something about me and you, you tell me something about you?" Kosh: ".... .... No. You do not understand. Go."

This is the correct order. I'm not so sure about watching s5 ep22 right at the end though... even though time-line wise it's set there... would it 'work'? Actually I think it would, yeah. DO IT!
And does anyone know about those really really recent bab5 releases? Came out in like 2007 - I heard they were bad, but haven't seen any - anyone here seen them? -omg-

DO NOT watch Crusade, River of Souls and the Legend of the Rangers. Especially the latter.
Anyway when I watched the series for the 1st time, I watched it from season 2.5 to the end and half of the stuff was a mystery to me.

Yep they were called the Lost Tales, was a couple of stories set on B5, one involved Lochley and a guy being possessed, and the other had Sheridan who might have to kill the future emperor of the Centurai. Both were pretty poor in my opinon, but was good to return to the world of B5.
