Edited by: Chris Stormrider on 04/08/2008 13:16:09 This idea (previously discussed in this old thread http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=60459) refers to a number of different currencies. Also this thread: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=839216 started a couple hours before me, no idea how I missed it, sorry. -
Summary: coins for alliances/factions (empire, pirate, etc.) Pros: a way to generate isk fast, reward players (alliance members or freelancers), create and control regional market for "affiliates", beginning of institutions like banks, stock/currency exchangers and the lot (is that really a good thing?), maybe even black market Cons (pun intended): a way to scam people by inflation or poor management of currency or theft. a way to kill the local and free (as in speech) market. might be used by isk sellers to make the money trail disappear, for example get some coins unload the in a safe spot: buyer comes to pick up jettisoned coins

We already have some of that in the way of Loyalty Points and tags dropped from various NPCs. Even Research Points can be considered in the same way.
What I would like to see is a way for alliances to convert isk into another currency they can control. A fairly simple way is to introduce something like a blueprint that can convert some tritanium into a few "coins" that people can use to buy stuff through contracts. You can reward your own players for missions, participation in fight etc. This will help alliances collect more isk and create an economy that will help their industrialists/miners.
On the other hand is a fast track to scamming, an alliance leader can circulate insane amounts of coins, get the isk and disappear but I guess this could happen in all sorts of ways already (corp theft mainly).
Also, factions could introduce their own "exotic" currencies, obviously valued lower than isk, as stated in various background stories. Think of pirate factions, especially, that wouldn't trade in isk, normally, since they are trying to hide the trail of money.
Another benefit of this is that players can start "investing" in currencies other than isk, now that we know CONCORD and its SCC can disappear for a few hours or permanently (like when the Minmatar and Thukker fleet attacked the station in Yulai). You could hold a few million or billion BoB or Goon money, and keep them in a frigate's cargo hold, just in case ;) So that's another step towards a full-fledged stock and currency exchange.
Anyway, this is a bit far fetched but it would be nice to have. I'd suggest that each alliance that wants to have its own currency get a unique BPO with the coin having it's crest or something. New coins are introduced when the client gets updated (like alliance logos) and only after the permission of an independent body (to justify the wait, until next TQ patch). Also there should be some kind of isk sink associated with the BPO, so that not just anybody can start his own economy, or even sovereignity level. Of course population should be a limit. In any case, this should be an option for big, fat, alliances.
Maybe at some later date these could be introduced in the wallet. So you don't carry around with your metal coins like other medieval games :p
EDIT: Added link to a recent thread about it.
