Butt ugly is great, but this particular style of ugly is not my favorite. I'd prefer the Amarr guy that's bald on the top but with hair sticking out the sides, or something like that.
And seriously, how can you have a 'Monk' bloodline and not give it a bald haristyle Gimmeh a bald head! (In Eve)
As it is, the avatar pic means next to nothing to me, but I suspect the portrait does effect some peoples perception and reaction of others.
Now if Eve got a facial generator like Oblivion, only better, more detailed and with better graphics, AND ambulation was more then just fluff, then I would probably spend hours if not days on several portraits for various character types. I think, out of the 22 hours I gave Oblivion before giving up and accepting it was a huge disappoinment, and that consoles really do destroy the industry, six or seven hours were spent on the face generator tool.

EVE's one is one of the best i've seen. You can really make some unique-looking avatars IMO.
Unless you're Achura that is. Some reason you all look the same

I'll admit it -- I didn't research character creation before I rolled my 1st toon. As a result I didn't know what difference races made or bloodlines nor even what the "training paths" meant either. When that voice in the beginning was saying "the choice you make will affect your attributes" I truly thought it would have some sort of in-game application like higher PER allowing farther lock ranges or something. I really was clueless.
So I picked my race based off something in the description that made it sound like it would be an "easier disposable noob" in order to try out the game and get my feet wet before rolling my "real character." Once I discovered how the attributes affect training time and that it's all time based anyway, I didn't want to lose the time on my character, so I kept it.
What race did I pick? Caldari.
Why? Becuz in my other MMO experience "fighter type" characters are easiest to start with, and the Caldari description is "militaristic."
What bloodline did I pick? Achura.
Why? I honestly don't remember.
I also picked Inventor as the "background." IIRC it added INT stat and I thought it would be useful. To the point that I added another 3 points to INT from the 5 I got to allocate. I ended up with a 12 - 8 - 8 - 8 - 3 base stat. With learning and implants I'm now 27 - 23 - 23 - 23 - 15 and could get the CHA to 17 in less than a week if I trained the last 2 learning skills for it. So even my CHA based skills don't train terribly slowly. I'm rather happy with how it all turned out.
Since I didn't know how to really manipulate the avatar picture then either, I'll admit my main's fuglier than most though.
My trader alt here is WAY hotter ;)
My 9 yr old son made an Amarr alt to fly around and do level 1 missions and some hi-sec ratting with, and it's even uglier than my Achura though. Of course I don't play that toon so I don't care what it looks like.

I also rolled my main character without a clue - I just thought "Amarr sounds like an interesting race to play" and "hmm Khanid, interesting background..."
Funny how I still think it's one of the best-looking choices in the game :p

I went through about 5 characters over a 3.5 year span before rolling Anubis here. I miss where I would be if I had kept my first character, but ultimately my quest for the perfect main is finally over.

This is how FOTM's get started. I'm willing to bet that if CCP were ever to 'fix' the charisma attribute there will be deafening whines on the forums from some of those that intentionally rolled Achuras. So basically, choose your race and then accept the consequences of your decision.

No bet. There was a thread proposing more CHA-based skills a month or so ago, and it was indeed drowned out by such whines.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

I rolled Gallente because I had nostalgic memories of my first Gallente and how awesome drones were, I went Gallente bloodline because Intaki aren't great fighters and Jin-Mei, although they look better than Achura, don't look great. In retrospect I think it was a good decision, although I will love Ambulation I'm going to be sad giving up this portrait, which took a long time to get right and I like it a lot.
However, fix Gallente hairstyles! Only about 3 are physically viable!

I remember that before creating a character i had read various guides abou tthe game all suggesting Archura for the reasons we all know. But when i saw how it looked the males plain ugly and the women without much personality although clearly better looking than the men i decided to pick soemthing else.
The thing is that i find myself considering the guys that make Archuras as powergamers and i usually avoid them or feeling not so friendly towards them . It's strange but it looks as if these points Archuras have less on charisma do count in real!
Also keep in mind that usually ISK farmers are Archuras Now you don't want to look like an ISK farmer do you?  |

Heh when I started eve; I had no clue about it; and the caldari had a good description. Being a small but militaristic nation sounded pretty good. Took achura as I liked the isolationist theme of the asians.
Found out later they`re numerous as hell :s Also I putted alot of points in my charisma as I thought it would be useful in a mmorpg oO.
Bright point is; I`m probably the Achura with highest base charisma (6 or 7!)
Also pretty happy with my char; I think she looks good.

The unfortunate difference between racial FOTMs and ship FOTMs is you can compensate for the latter but not the former. If you pick the wrong race you're screwed for the rest of EVE unless you reroll. If you pick a ship and it gets nerfed, you can train for another and still have most of your support and weapon skills. However, whenever you train for any FOTM you voluntarily accept the risk that it will be nerfed in the future. So really you have no right to whine, but I guess people don't think that way, and instead expect eve to become nano-Achuras online.
Anyway, the more I think about it the more I'm inclined to roll a Khanid. The extra 2 charisma is probably decent insurance against the possible charisma buff. Then again, a lot of stuff they've been adding so far that used charisma (gang warfare, trade skills, etc) can be skipped and you still have a solid pvp character.

I chose my race based on backstory alone. It occurred to me when making my alt that I could choose achura to get the best stats, but then I remembered that when I start thinking like that I will have sucked all the fun out of the game and it will be time to quit permanently. So my alt is also Gallente.
Also, I prefer stats balanced across the board, including CHA, as I never know what CCP is going to add to the game, or what skills my own constantly changing interests will lead me to train.
Also, while I have undoubtedly 'lost' SP due to my attributes, I have also undoubtedly 'lost' more due to quitting for six months, so it's kind of academic for me at this point anyway.

I was an idiot and listened to too much advice on the New Citizens channel and rolled this.
The problem is, I didn't realize my mistake till I was 4 months into the game and he is pretty much a jack of all trades, haven't really specialized in anything. So I don't see myself rerolling now. And, besides, I don't think he looks too bad .

Same thing can said about Khanid, Civire, Sebiestor, and so forth, when the player creating the character attempt to create something about the character, giving it the looks of a badass, femme fatale, authority or whatever that floats your boat.
