What is the state of AI progress in EVE? I know about rogue drones and whatnot, but are they just machinery that sort of never got turned off, or are they viable AIs? The only reference I've found thus far is about nexus chips, and our ships don't match the sort of AI I'm discussing.

Well, if you mean an A.I. capable of full on self replication and improvement completely free of biological intelligence then the rogue drones are that. In the Empyrean Age novel, there is one line that seems to imply as much. (End of chapter 36 when Victor comes across a Rogue Drone hive: 'Rogue drones - the only non-natural, self aware intelligence in the universe that humankind knew of...') I believe though this vary much depends on one's own view of what constitutes true intelligence or self awareness as I don't think there is any hard scientific criteria for either yet, and it is mostly regarded as a philosophical concept. But I'd imagine that a rogue drone if it wanted to, and did a study of human behavior could pass a Turing test. It (Or them if a hive mind.) might actually develop it as a evolutionary advantage when 'hunting.' By using that capacity to fool humans into answering desperate distress calls, or infiltrating human stations and planetary colonies to gather more information on them, if only for self preservation if not planning hostile action. But thats just my speculation of the kind of things rogue drone colonies will eventually begin doing. / "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do." - Confucius, Chinese philosopher & reformer (551 BC - 479 BC.) |

The EVE scientific community is pretty turned off by AI as every attempt to create it has gone horribly horribly wrong. As such the "AI" in this game is less artificial intelligence and more in the terms of low-level automation. I'm guessing recognition algorithms is about the only thing that has improved when compared to current technology. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. and thats why i like ever, because every single time an ai/learning computer is created things go horribly HORRIBLY wrong for the humans involved

I quite liked "Mass Effect"'s approach - true AI tends to go horribly wrong, so you create "Virtual Intelligence" instead, which is basically a massive database of pre-programmed responses controlled by a few identification algorithms.
An AI is a living mind. in Mass Effect, that meant the Geth. in EVE, it means Rogue Drones.
VIs are not. In Mass Effect, they were base controllers and information terminals. In EVE, AURA would be a VI. -
