I am curios roughly what percentage of eve players pay any attention to things like playing cards, and the EvE novel. Where is the value in committing resources (financial and otherwise) to catering to niche player base? Personally i can think of many other areas of eve that would benefit from some love.
How may of you are into this kind of thing?

Isn't all of EvE a niche playerbase?
And they are a company, who is going to spend it's assets how it see's fit. The 'White Wolf' deal allows CCP to focus on other genres, even other MMO's, so that they might one day expand beyond producing a top-rate product and various side products to one of the most ungrateful audiences in the industry.
But yeah, if CCP didn't commit resources to a niche player base, EvE wouldn't be here. And I don't think there's any logical reason that CCP *shouldn't* spend ITS money and ITS resources catering to as many niche audiences as it wishes.
Stepping off the pedestal for a moment, I don't buy their playing cards and whatnot. Maybe if they sold some figurines of eve ships, I might collect a few. And I've thought about wearing a t-shirt or two. To me, though, it's interesting to see them market the same product to so many different individuals, while not 'selling out', so to speak.
A comparison would be Blizzard and WoW. There is Warcraft stuff everywhere. I have no interest in any of it. But for some reason, what Blizzard sells feels cheap and exploited, to me, and what CCP produces feels top quality and in keeping with how good their game is.
Just my impression.

What?
CCP bought White Wolf. White Wolf do their own thing - make roleplay games and CCGs amongst other things. To suggest that this is a distraction, or waste of resources is sheer lunacy - an RPG developer is nothing at all like a game programmer.
However I have to say that I for one, have been very appreciative of what I see as the 'White Wolf' influence on the EVE storyline - I don't know if you've noticed, but _lots_ of stuff has been growing descriptions and backplot. The Empyrean age release was also possibly the most exciting downtime I've seen.
More story doesn't detract from a game. This is doubly so when writing the story isn't in any way detracting from the development of the game. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

WW and CCP are also working on another MMO seperate from Eve. WW is creating the Ambulation expansion as well in conjunction with CCP.

We're basically getting White Wolf's 'back work' as they go into alpha for their game. I think it's a good deal, as that means EvE gets a powerful expansion from a direction that EvE had nothing.
I'm pretty happy that we're getting that build. All the calls on the forums of 'wasted assets' ... not from the op, I don't think, but in other posts ... just prove that players don't understand the situation with White Wolf and the real deal that EvE Online players are banking.

I like how CCP is doing business, the books, magazines etc, they mix it up a bit and give the thousands of fans something new but related to EVE.
There are plenty out there who enjoy the cards, novels and such. If there wasn't, CCP likely wouldn't keep selling it.

- I play the Eve ccg along with 4 of my fellow Eve players that i know IRL, and are even getting people who don't play Eve into it.
- I have read the Empyrean Age novel and 99% of the stories and back history on the Eve-O site.
- I am looking forward to the Eve pen and paper that White Wolf are developing.
- I'm looking forward to the World Of Darkness mmorpg that CCP are helping with.
- I also play most White Wolf pen and paper RPGs at a local gaming club i help run.
So yeah, there's definitely a call for the 'niche' playerbase as you like to call it :)

WhiteWolf is way more than a CCG company. In fact, the CCG stuff is minimal to their market share. Their big products come from their World of Darkness role playing games. Think modern times, with a bleak outlook, where vampires and werewolves are real and fight behind the scenes. It's pretty cool stuff if you're into pen and paper RPGs, though honestly I find the original offerings to be preferable to the newer stuff.
Something that I have always liked about WhiteWolf's materials is the quality of the writing and the depth of their fiction. There is a lot of fantastic stuff there. They also push 'role playing' over 'roll playing', something many other PnP RPGs fail to do on an epic scale (I'm looking at you, AD&D).
I'm not really interested in the Eve novel - Eve's fiction just doesn't do much for me. Not a slam to the Eve RPers, by the way. It just isn't my thing. I'm sure that the novel is well written, though. WW's writing has always been top notch.
WhiteWolf was involved in a video game based on their Werewolf: The Apocalypse franchise about, oh... Seven or eight years ago? I believe the working title was "Werewolf: Tears of Gaia". For the time, the graphics were outstanding, the game play looked great, and it had some great technology. But, the company working on the game was bought out just a few months before release and the whole project was scrapped. I was totally bummed.
They also have a Diablo-like game based on their Vampire: The Masquerade franchise, though I forget the name. It was a good game. The voice acting and plot was involving and, the best part, it came with a full map editor and multi-player support and a 'GM Mode' so that a group of people could have an RP session using the game engine. It was pretty innovative for its time, blew away anything Baulder's Gate or NWN could do.
Anyways, I am pretty happy that CCP and WW are working together on a new game. Expect the end result to be of the highest quality.

Would WoD be more of your typical RPG where combat is the main focus, or would there be other forms of combat (such as marketing in EVE), where you have this cold war-esque between werewolves and vampires? But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

Umm Eve is not strapped for cash its strapped for code. Bit of a difference there. I'm sure CCP could buy the supercomputer to run the new Eve cluster on right this minute and not even break a sweat on the bottom line. However writing all the new code to put on the new supercomputer isn't going to get sped up by tossing moar money or moar programmers who have to be brought up to speed at it.

I've played an awful lot of WoD, and it's not combat focused unless you want it to be... That's the beauty of tabletop (or loungeroom) RPGs.

yes, yes and more yes.
WW has a history in pen and paper games way before CCGs, and i think the MERGER between the two companies is a very sound move. Either of them can stand alone but merging their respective specialties they can do something really interesting.
CCP brings 5 years of experience running a MMO which is a bleak, dark and dangerous world and WW has had years, decades of experience writing about a bleak, dark and dangerous world.
I think that a game produced from these 2 companies will be awesome and i really can't wait to see how it would go.

Suffice to say: ≡v≡ is niche; White Wolf's line of products is not.

Lol Whitewolf is a decades rich company that produces tabletop RPG's that are one of the "big three", D&D, Shadowrun, and World of Darkness. They have sold multitudes more books than EVE has subscribers.
Telling CCP that they should stop production on products related to a HUGE cash cow PnP franchise is pretty stupid.

I dare say that White Wolf caters to a lot more customers then Eve does. Their World of Darkness line and their Exalted line are right behind D&d as the biggest pen and paper RPGs in the world. We are not talking a mere 100K customers here, but possible millions.
Eve is the niche market here, not White Wolf's products.

The real question is, how well will it translate into the computer gaming world.
Arguably, the WoD IP is far larger than the Warcraft one – or at least it was before WoW came along – so if it had the same kind of follower pickup, it could become the next MMO. However, in that regard, it's worth considering how well (or not so well) D&D-O did even with the most well-known RPG IP evar(!1!) backing it: a WoD MMO will face much the same challenges in terms of translating a hugely popular pen-and-paper experience into a computer game…
I'd venture to guess that it'll be even harder for WoD, since those games were always about storytelling, and the mechanics took a backseat to the point of being completely irrelevant. In that regard, D&D was probably a far easier translation, since it was a very twink-friendly and stats-heavy system already in it's p'n'p form.
If the WoD MMO becomes a monster-bashing, instanced-mission, clickfest rather than a game about politics, intrigue and nibbling on busty women (), then almost all the value of that IP is instantly lost.

This is the crux of the matter. What makes Eve so great is that there is room for politics, intrigue and actually controlling parts of the in game environment (we just need busty women to nibble on). This is what is sorely lacking in any other MMO and an absolute must for anything WoD related.
It'll be very hard to pull off well. If we will have a WoD MMO and we aren't able to become the next Prince of the city and dictate law for the other players and NPCs out there, it will loose appeal for a lot of WoD enthusiasts very quickly. But if anyone can pull it off it is CCP in tandem with White Wolf.
At the moment I am somewhat sceptical if it can be pulled off properly, but I still look forward to seeing the design of the coming WoD MMO. I hope to be blown away.

Well I have a Gangrel Wolf head tattooed on my right arm (for you who donÆt know what I am talking about that means I am a big WW fanboi) and I am really looking forward to what might come out of CCP and WW.
WoD-O if done right might just be more then sweet to play around in, but at the same time there is much that can go wrong with it at the same time, kinda like the TV series Kindred based on WW story about the vampires, that was just horrible.
The EVE novel, I have it and have read it, awesome book.
The card game. hmm, never had a look at it, but I guess some like it so thatÆs all good.

Someone didn't get the oversounding 'negative' that they were hoping for.
By the way, considering that EvE is a MMO RPG, with especial significance one the 'roleplaying' aspect, you might not have as many people against such things as you would like.
Not a lot of gamers roleplay anymore, it's true. They use EvE like a counterstrike-in-space game. As long as they have fun, that's great.
And not every roleplayer enjoys 'LARP'. But there is a classic and fun edge to gaming, and EvE caters to a huge playerbase because of it's ever arching and always updating storyline and possibilities.
Sorry we didn't reaffirm your mental image of your own popularity.
