Edited by: Fuse on 01/06/2004 01:01:23 I know this is not technically a General Discussion topic but it is better of here so please leave it here. What I propose is a starship creation utility that lets us change the hull and slot configuration utility. The downside of using the starship creator would be it would be expensive. Each ship would have five different hull styles. Changing slot configurations would double the cost of your ship making it a luxury to do so. The insurance value would not increase just because you have a modified hull. There would also be restrictions on how many modifications you could make on a ship making them exponentially expensive. No you can never turn a Black Bird in to a Scorpion. It would also require the Starship engineering skill.
This would help us break the monotony of looking at the same type of ships over and over again. People love to customize proven in the build your own Dreadnought thread.

interesting idea, but I think being able to customize slot layout would bork gamplay balance.
Although just being able to customize your hull would be cool. Adding doodads, removing doodads... like Id like a tempest that doesnt have that giant retarded sail on top.
And for the love of all things holy, give us an option to customize our paintjobs! +++
It's called "low security space" for a reason. |

Since beta I've been suggesting this. Start with just a blank chassis, then you choose the type of power core, engines, mounts, sensors etc to put on. Obviously putting one thing on will hinder another, like better sensors may decrease your defensive capabilities or whatnot.

We don't have to do the exponential cost config. The hull config would be nice. 0.o It's not you... no wait it is you. |

Earth & Beyond is not EVE and Star Trek. Customization was not invented by EnB. Let me send you .25 isk so you can buy yourself a clue. Allot of gamers like customization that is a fact. |

I had suggested in the past that a cool way to make industry skills more useful would be to do something like this.
Basically all these features would need to be put in:
1: Manufacturers logo/stamp somewhere on the info pages. 2: Based on skill levels, and resource availability, as well as some kind of balance system:
The slots could be configured, as well as other basics. This could use a simple point buy system, for example: Every 10 points of armor on a frig costing 1 point, every slot costing 50 etc. And each ship class given either a max point value (partialy based on manufacturers skills and resources), or a max customization value.
For example using method 1 (complete point buy system): you could turn an blackbird hull into a more combat oriented ship, and less of an EW oriented ship.
For example using method 2 (limited customization): The blackbird would still be most effective in EW, but could maybe lose a high slot in favor of more speed, or armor.
Either way it's a sound idea, but working from the already existing systems and ships it's kind of hard to balance. Just look how long it's taken to balance what we already have to the level it's currently at? Now imagine gamers could exploit weaknesses in the balance even more by increasing the stats available for using unbalanced modules.
Last but not least, it could lead to some interesting scams... Some dude building a frigate with 5 or 6 high slots, but only 1 medium slots, and 1 low and maybe 12 Powergrid. some newb comes along and sees "Ohhh 6 high slot turrets! that will OWN!" and buys it can only fit 3-4 modules on the ship LOL.
But anyway I doubt this idea will ever ever happen, it would be a LOT of work...
So instead, I hope CCP hurries and puts in a paint shop option, even if it's only just a selection from a small pallette of basic colors. Like a couple shades of red, orange, green, blue, black and white for example with some metalic colors like gold, bronze silver ETC.
I'd love to have a shiny onyx black thorax with blood red highlights...
Galaxion > If you drove a car shaped like a thorax women would call you Demangel > Dude... I would call.. Demangel > wait that sounded g@y I bet. Galaxion > Just a bit.

An idea that I hope the devs read (but they won't):
Slots use a certain variable, lets call it SLOTPOWER. 3 low slots won't use much SLOTPOWER. Add another, and it uses more. But the more you add, the more SLOTPOWER each one uses. So if you put on 8 midslots, you're NOT getting a lot of high or low slots. But if you have say 6 midslots, you might be able to get 7 highslots and 7 lowslots.
