I'm spending some quality time plying the galaxy and some hot shot decides to blow my frigate up. Fine he had 1 billion SP's so I was toast, Then before I could say "aunt jemima's microwave french toast; he podded me.
I had a clone. Went through the process and I'm back in my ship and all was well except for one problem:
I REALIZED I WASN'T ME. This really wrecked the game for me at that point because I'm role-playing out there. I suddenly realized that yes, the clone is a clone of me, but the REAL me blew up out there in space...that wrecked brain was me ...SO I DIED and this clone was resurected and it's not me!
I feel strangely odd in a sort of out-of-body way and frankly when I play the game now I feel I'm losing touch with reality. After all this time I realize that I am gone. There must be a way around this. Any ideas? Please please help me.

Yes I understand but even if I have the personality of a used soap dish, it still does not solve my role-playing conundrum. It's like I'm stuck in russel-space trying to figure out if the set of all sets that don't contain themselves, contains itself.

If you go with the Amarr conservative point of view, you are the combination of the body and the spirit, and clones are not you, since they lack either the spirit or the original flesh. In many cultures in the EVE universe, cloning (even for medical purposes) is slightly frowned upon. If you go by the capsuleer point of view however, the sum of your experiences, memories and your reactions is you, so it doesn't matter what body you inhabit... therefore, all clones (or even custom-altered clones) are still you. That might explain however why most people regard capsuleers as gods (or at least god-like).
If it makes you hapier, even if you were never cloned, you are still not you. Except your brain (or at least parts of it), most of the cells that are the you now are NOT the same cells that were you a decade ago. And even the cells in your brain, they don't have the same atoms they used to have a decade ago. Out of whatever atoms "were" you ten years ago, if 1% of them still remain, it would be quite impressive.

There is one way. Prior to podding, your brain's wave-patterns...it's electro-bio-chemical framework frozen at a single moment in space-time, it transmitted via stations back to where your clone is. This "pattern" is then "submitted" and "integrated into" the clone brain-matrix. There could be issues such as loss of sinnal in transmission which could lead to you waking up in a vegetative state; a drooling idiot. CCP could make it a low probability occurancve but it would solve my problem. There would be a tiny chance but a chance.
Good idea?

First, see edit.
Second, that's how the RP goes anyway, the moment your pod gets breached, a forceful scanning beam almost instantly records and transmits your "brain data" to a cloning facility... the process is destructive for the brain, but you no longer care about it anyway, since if pod is breached, you're about to die anyway.
However, with the introduction of jumpclones, this story was kind of broken but no satisfactory one put in place. You could probably argue/RP it that the "skill" you learn lets you handle (without going bonkers) a slower but painful similar scan that is not destructive in order to allow clonejumps.

Some would suggest that our brains are not us...I would disagree but I suppose it's a philosophical issue. Anyway your idea is sufficient for me. The "frozen pattern" would be your collective cosciousness but until sensory organs were re-applied you would be in a conscious but imprisoned hell.

You're not a human, you're an infomorph, a bundle of data that once comprised the conciousness of a human being.
You don bodies like clothing, but they are not yours. Your true body is the hull of the starships you command, your true senses electronic, infallible and far reaching.
You are a pilot- lives are ended at the pulse of your guns, and you command funds that could buy entire planet-bound cities.
don't let it go to your head, eh?

Your brain is not you, it's merely an interface you use to give commands to your body, from the conscious to the unconscious, sort of like an organic CPU interacting with the rest of the machine. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post. |

You should technically have to forget everything you did after updating your clone the last time. You know, to keep it real. Your new body won't have any of the memories of your old body.
Can you imagine if you could willingly forget a pre-determined amount of time? I know I would nuke this past week...

Edited by: Mika Meroko on 08/08/2008 20:10:49 here, do this:
list 20 things that you define yourself as:
IE: I am a student, I am a husband/wife/whatever/Tarmaic's sex slave....
and.... your memories/experience as those...
now, image you died, but cloned, but still got the same memories/experience...
how do you feel?
it all depends on which level of existential or narrative description of yourself,
in the existential views... on the med-low levels, of course you arent yourself anymore....
on the higher levels... if your values/concept of you are the same.. then you are yourself...
for narratives.... yeah, life is a story... as long as you can explain how you changed as a result, you are still you =P
edit: man I am too drunk for this.

Some only realize this once they've already died, some never realize...
But some of us knew it even before we got podded for the first time, because those are the kind of things you always think about. Or should be thinking about.
Those are the kinds of things that doesn't matter in the end. People die, you die. You haven't died yet as you were born in the cloning-vat, and whomever it was that died, isn't you.
Enjoy your short life, for here in EVE it is likely to be shorter than that of a firefly.
So; next time some annoying bastard from the Pod-Ship Crew Protection Agency (PSCPA) comes up to you and starts berating you for all the lives lost to the carefree wars of us pod pilots, tell him this:
The fine men and women that crew my ship, they've enjoyed a long life from the day they were born until the day my ship blows up. Me? I was born 10 hours ago, and will die within the next few.

Just dont get podded too many times consecutively or your brain will turn into mush.

It kind of is you. It's not just someone else with your memories as a lot of people seem to think. Your conciousness is transferred to a new body, not just your memories.
Think about it. If right now a person exactly like you was created with all of your memories and everything, would you be ok with dying because there is a person out there that's exactly like you in every way? No, because it's not you. But if your actual consciousness (which is more an active process rather than a collection of memories) were to be transferred, it would be you.

You've obviously never read the background about cloning and have no clue what you're talking about. Go read it, then if you feel you have something meaningful to add, come back.
