Not a lag whine post...
Can CCP spend their way out of this or is it an aspect of the internetz that simply cannot be overcome?
If CCP bought the best servers, would it help? Would you as a player be willing to pony up for funds to help pay for it? Like say another 5 bucks a month? I say I would and it would be worth it.
I ask because I'm really starting to get into the game and do not want to invest time for nothing.

Edited by: Pan Crastus on 11/08/2008 14:47:00 Lag is a feature now and CCP doesn't care, you can see that from their new policy regarding reimbursement for losses due to lag, i.e. "you know it's laggy so it's your own fault".
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

So it cannotbe overcome? Fleet battle simply cannot be fought? I thought fleet battles were advertised as a "fun" aspect of the game. It looks to me like they are just lag-drains and all luck.

Of course it can be overcome with an appropriate dedication to the job, but CCP wants to earn money and not spend it.

Lag is there to disguise that fleet battles are in fact boring instruction following. As long as the lag is there, 0.0 lemmings won't realise this and will keep playing. -

They can't just spend their way out of it (actually they have already from I've read about the servers).
What they need is to do a massive rewrite of their code (which they are working on, see the infiniband project). Problem is that with programming more people don't always mean more/better code output... --- -The only real drug problem is scoring real good drugs |

to be honest the thing that gets me is the fleet size is friggin huge and the servers cant take it, whilst not fixing all situations if fleets where only 30 people big that would help.

Having played this game 3+ years or so I think CCP just doesn't have the expertise or will to really fix it. My opinion based on the 100's of threads on this and the rare official responses is that nothing will improve anytime soon.
TBH its really killed the game for me. After I spent time looking at black loading screens and empty grids despite a 4+ hour build up to the fight, it quickly became 'whats the point' to me.
Also CCP has done nothing but add to the blob. The POS changes, sovereignty changes, the titan nerf, all basically meant that if you want to be a space holding alliance you NEED to blob and with such long stront timers it means any major system fight will be lagged to hell.
CCP its time you talk to the tech people BEFORE you do a game design change, and then talk to the people who play in 0.0 who can tell you what that effect will be PRIOR to making said changes.

I think they are doing something about it. They're making it harder to take space, and so providing a disincentive to even trying.
Look at the changes they've made in the last year or so, from the sov mechanics to jump bridges to cyno jammers, they all point in the direction of an entrenched entity being harder and harder to evict from their space as long as they are willing to defend it.
Combine these changes with the rapid expansion of the T2 market and the massive amounts of isk it generates for space holding entities, and you have a formula for the whole of the game becoming "Empire", with the only difference being that some of it is "NPC Controlled Empire" and some of it is "Player Controlled Empire".
As the established space-holders become more and more entrenched, you'll probably see fleet fights decline. It'll become boring and pointless to destroy a bunch of dreds that are chump-change for your opponent and will just be quickly and easily replaced.
Unless something changes substantially, 0.0 in a year will just be an extension of low-sec empire. There'll be some pirates running around and little skirmishes here and there, and maybe the occasional pointless lag-fest just for the sake of having one, but the mega-power-blocs will control pretty much everything, and the borders will stablize.
Viola! No more lag issue.

I agree with you. The lag, even in systems and area where player counts are low, is bad enough to make you log off in frustration. If they don't do something soon, it will really hurt the future of the game.
Many people started playing with the big push of faction warfare and I am sure that many of them have run into lag issues. That kind of bad experience can lead to a lot of bad word of mouth advertising.
I really hope the address these issues in a positive manner soon.

Oh my god, a serious hall monitor post.
Anyways, it doesn't look like ccp is going to do anything about the lag anytime soon(tm). I REALLY wish they would do something about ship loss lag, lost a full set of +3 implants the other day because I couldn't do jack for 10 seconds after wartargets in highsec blew my hurricane to bits.
My advice to you is stick to small gang pvp (in before speed nerf whiners) and avoid Jita. It's worked for me so far... Hey look! It's a signature!
