I finally saw this "EVE downtime madness" application so I excitedly downloaded it. So a handy loading screen pops up, with a loading bar, and a sliver of loading, then nothing ... for a looooong time. CTRL+ALT+DEL/end process.
This occured on three attempts of running it.

Seriously, I waited about 13 minutes this time before I gave up. Pentium Quad Core system here at work (shhhh), so I don't think it should take that long.

Unfortunately, GameMaker, as a development platform, appears to use some kind of arcane algorithms for almost everything from loading to collision detection (possibly BubbleSort). In addition I've created the game using the non-professional (free) version of gamemaker, forcing me to use more memory-intensive methods for rotating sprites than I would have liked (A painfully large part of that loading screen is battleship sprites ).
I even downloaded a cracked version of the professional GameMaker but it stop working after one use.
Basically, it just takes a damn long time to load, and there's not much I can do about it - it's enough an issue that it's forced me to reconsider the scale of the game and rethink how I've been developing it entirely. It also doesn't help that using GameMaker, while speeding up the development process, makes it hard for me to debug lower-level issues and optimize the code properly.
TL;DR: It just take a long time to load and there's not much I can do about it.
The bright side is that I still plan to, if not finish the game in it's current state, rewrite it in a real programming language as part of a year long school project. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Pricing information on it is at http://www.yoyogames.com. I think it's something like $20 for a full version. I even had a registered version at some point but their customer support hates me.
It's not bad for making small games and it's easy for someone without much of a programming background to learn, but It just doesn't scale well, unfortunately. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Ever considered using Flash? I started off using a 'Free' Proffesional version of game maker and it was good for learning, but now I've learned how to use flash MX, and I prefer it for lots of reasons. Graphics are easier and MUCH nicer looking on flash. The code is faster (usually). You can imbed games onto a site. etc...
It takes a while to learn to use it well, but it's well worth it in the long run. After under a year of using it (properly) I am now writing a quite advanced 2D physics engine, si it can't be too hard to pick up.

That's the irony in my post I suppose. I am a Flash Developer of 14 years now (since the beginning before it HAD code). I also do 3D, video, and music/sound production.
Anywho, when I finally got the game to work (yay for that), I was thinking to myself "This could be soooo much better in Flash".
If I had ANY spare time (aside from EVE of course), I might consider making an EVE type Flash game for downtime. Hmmm, I just had an idea. Maybe I will have to look into it. So much for sleep. "Never start a fight you can win." - Roc Wieler |

I am actually quite lucky. It was part of my negotiation when I started here. Our IT recently did performance testing on a sampling of computers throughout the company. They took about 300 samples. The highest (other than mine), scored 660. Mine scored 866. So I guess it's pretty good. Wish I had it at home to be honest. "Never start a fight you can win." - Roc Wieler |

I think the rage would come from you calling it a 'Pentium' when Intel has long stopped using that name, not from the fact that you have a quad-core processor.
I could be wrong, though.
