Hello,
I've heard a bit about mining and tractoring your can behind you... Can you warp back to the station like this or does the can get left behind? (Like I imagine it would?)
Can you do this with an unanchored GSC?(i.e. dump the GSC into space and tractor it behind you?)
Just trying to figure out how to Solo mine more efffectively without making return trips to the station every cycle or two!

once you hit warp you lose all targets. both those that are targeting you, and those targets you have set, so you wouldn't be able to warp with a can in tow
you can mine into a GSC, but best would be to find a spot with plenty of roids in range, anchor the GSC and fill it up. There are some limitations with GSC's as they can't be dropped or anchored anywhere within 5000m of anything else. Roid, wreck or other can.
once you get into a bigger mining ship, the cycles will become to big for the GSC tho. and either having a hauler standing by or docking when cargohold is full is your only option to avoid any risk of canflippers

Yeah, but a retriever with 4000 can only take 4 ice before its full so I wanted to be able to drop it into a can.
I could still do that but will have to anchor several GSC's, fill them up and go back to get the freighter and empty the GSC's that are full of ICE....
Are there any better options to mine more ICE (which takes up a lot of space compared to the ore's)?

getting a Mackinaw would be one step. It got 5000 m3 cargo and is geared for ice mining. Wouldn't solve your GSC problem much, but would make mining faster. Dropping several GSCs would probably mean you would have to move around a lot to drop your ice into them.
And jetcanning while icemining is risky. You spend lots of time to get the ice and have someone just come in and steal it from you is a pain. Best advice I can give you is trying to get someone to haul for you.
I use 2 accounts. 1 for mining and 1 for hauling, so I am not worried about canflippers. But it is only a viable sollution if you can afford 2 accounts at once. It does make mining more profitable since you dont have to move around or warp away ever so often. And mining ice means you can spend all day at the same roid without it being depleted. ----------------------------------------------- Recruiting manager. Thanks Thoram,
And in that lies my problem... With only one account (two chars but still one act), and running Linux where I would need to make changes to get both sewssions running at once - something I cant be bothered with), it leaves me with only one character to run with. I have my corp but I have the freighter so I cant mine ice and freight at the same time.
I think my only option is to mine ice, dump into a couple of GSC's and when its all full, warp back to station, come back and empty the GSC's into my industrial/freighter...
Thanks for all your assistance anyway!

You cannot put anything into Freighter cargohold from cans at asteroid belt.
Freighters can be loaded and unloaded only at stations and near online control towers.

A hulk, fitted with 3x T2 Cargo Expanders, can mine (IIRC) 12 units of ice before having to dock. With my skills, I can mine 12 chunks of ice every 22 minutes, or about 34 an hour.
Fit the hulk with Cargo Opt Rigs, and you'll be able to go longer.
Hope this solves your problem - but in actuality, (other than the training time), it just changes your problem to "How can I convince people I'm not a Macro?"
In my experience, more people are anti-macro happy than are can-flip happy...

But can a mining ship change the contents of a freight container? (which can be picked up by freighters anywhere, if my understanding is correct)

Sorry, I was actually referring to Industrial's - I cant pilot Freighters.....
Since my entire wealth (the highest it's been without getting ISk from friends) is 6 mill isk - 5.5 is entirely mine from mining over the past month of playing...
So any method I have to create isk I'll take - (not pirating or stealing, the worlds harsh but I dont have to make it harsher...)(Yes I'm a carebear - booohoo If you dont like it then dont read the forums.... - at least I'm one until I get enough isk and training to kick ppl's a**!)
So I might sound like a Macro but with a wife and 1 year old daughter and working full time I dont get a lot of time to play Eve - just enough time to mine for an hour or so a couple of times a week...
Hey, If I repost this on the Events forum, maybe I can get people to donate me isk for that sob story!!!

Wait wait wait. A freighter cant pick up the content of a can? What do people haul with then?

The safest and most efficient solo method is Ninja Mining (or Harvesting, in this case). Set up a safe spot between the field and station, but not too far from the field (you want to align to a celestial object while keeping the warp short). I suggest setting up the safe spot with an MWD frigate to keep it off the direct field-station route.
Now, complete your normal mining cycle and warp to your safe spot instead of the station to drop your ore/ice into a named jetcan. After an hour or so, head back to the station for the hauler (but remember to move the ore/ice into a new named jetcan on your last drop as insurance against unexpected problems). ---------------- Mutatis Mutandis |

I don't suppose you can tractor an anchored container now... Otherwise you could stack all your GSC's on one spot and have a secure jetcan ------------------------ Ship Yield Calc Improve Mining |

Hi,
Thanks to all who have contributed to this discussion.
FYI: I have now moved to a different ICE system as the one I was in had no stations. Now I can mine in a Retreiver with 2 Cargo Extenders (I) making 3125 cargo units (3 ice) and have an anchored GSC (3900 units). So I can mine Ice in three cycles (two harvester turrets) to get 6 units. - take 3 to the station and come back for the other three. It keeps the cycles running and I can still keep drones ratting fairly safely. (Working on higher Drone skills!)
(I might consider dropping another 2 GSC's and keep cycling......)
Thanks for all your assistance. Regards,
Jason Brisbane
