I was never really complaining about the DL times, that was just a sidenote. I do have paitence. The problem is that it's eating up every last MB I have just to have a few videos (seeing as other random crap already takes up most of my space)
Originally by: Rawr Cristina *shrugs* EVE-Files dosen't download at full-speed always even on my connection, so It can't do for everyone else. I've waited well over 3 hours downloading some vids even
I forgot to mention that too, EvE-Files never goes past about 65 KB/s for me, and it doesn't let me DL more than 3 things at once.

So now to release an eve video you need;
1. Awesome footage, a given, otherwise the video is boring 2. Be frapsing at a decent enough resolution for the viewer not to be distracted by poor quality 3. Be an expert at encoding too
Making a good video takes time, effort, and at least some experience in the program you're using - video editing can be lengthly and frustrating.
Stop whining about amateur videos, either download them, enjoy them, and either store or delete, or don't download them. These people aren't paid to make videos, they're not obligated to make videos, and they're certainly not obligated to cater to the size of your hard drive.
/Signed Like Yuki pointed out nicely so I didn't have to, some of us don't feel like spending an extra half-day or day in some cases just to make an extra vid that's 100mb less just for maybe 10% of total veiwers out there ... Now if you want to start paying people to do it I'm sure they'd be happy to, but this is a side-hobby for most who do it for their fun and try not to turn it into a job kthxbye. -------------------------------------- Ghost Festival - NA Recruiter/Director -Korthan

try out AutoGK (google it)
u can select percentage of the quality u want and code it to divx or xvid and its really realy fast and simple... and u will get a smaller file than wmv and a bit bigger than mkv

Who the hell want to convert a movie to DivX or Xvid today?, OMFG. Those 2 codecs are the most crappiest codecs around today .

I disagree, XviD is still one of the better codecs around, and I personally prefer it over x264/wmv any day. If you know how to handle it it's a powerhouse. That being said, any codec will have trouble compressing EVE's UI to a readable result, hence the higher bitrates that need to be used, downscaling UI enabled footage indeed is quite a big no-no and will result in most cases in unreadable footage. lovesauce |

Laziness more than anything
A lot of vid apps (Vegas, Premiere) will render+encode in a single step straight to .WMV, so people do that and think nothing more of it .
Encoding to .MKV takes much longer as you have to first render the vid to lossless .AVI which can take up near 100GB in some cases Then use external apps which you've no idea how to use (or even find if you don't know where to look) to convert to .MKV. A lot of people just don't bother.

I'll stand to be corrected when I say the colour reproduction in DivX is richer than x264, but the downside is the size of files it produces.
I like to keep a personal copy of any work I do in a very high bitrate and 4-pass encode in VirtualDub using DivX Pro. Anything which is going to be uploaded goes into MVK, purely because of the quality v compression.

Wow, really? I mean, sometimes EVE Files is totally buggered, but I've downloaded videos off of it at at least 10mb/s, sometimes up to my maximum of 20 many times.
Of course, with my internet connection the size of videos rarely bothers me. However, I am far more likely to download a video encoded as an mkv or that is of a smaller filesize anyway.

I noticed the same. Files are huge nowadays. Don't know whats the reason, but I always spend 75% of my movie making time just trying to figure out how to render and I was never really good at it. I'm glad this thread came out as I hope there will be a tutorial for high-quality small-size rendering soon (/me looks at AlleyKat <3). If there's not gonna be one, I still thank AK and Cristi for few useful tips in this thread. I hope they will work next time I start making a video.

IMO, if there's UI shown, it should be readable. But as you said, if there's no UI you can scale the original video down alot and preserve same quality.
agreeing with this post, as i think UI is pretty important for eve vids.
also, as a few people have said, you dont have to download a video if you deem it too large in size or resolution. don't blame the video makers for this.

The big videos and big resolutions are nice because you get to see the detail of the fights. Otherwise you're watching explosions with almost no context - explosions you've seen a thousand times.
Though, the trouble is that most videos are a waste of time and some ISPs do cap your bandwidth. I can download at 10mbit/s but only 60GB combined/month. At full speed, I can burn through that in under a day. I don't want to waste half a gig on lame ganks, when I can go log in and do the same stuff for far less bandwidth. I'd still take the HD versions, but people should indeed learn how to provide alternatives.

i understand what you are on about i only release 3-4 min vids at high res .mkv for about 60-70 meg. As i am making a weekly Documentry Of TRI i had to spend some time on the encoding to get good quality i wanted. I would recommend getting Stax Rip as it is easy to use and very functinal. Here are some of my small releases >70 Mb.
