Inevitable conclusions
"What now?"
She stood there in front of Uilliam asking in a soft voice, unafraid and calm with both her hands by her sides. Her long red hair blowing to the side of her face as the breeze came in off the ocean. The night sky of Tash-Murkon Prime V twinkled with stars above them both here atop the tallest building in the coastal resort city of New Udoria, the Amarr Trade Registry's Mineral Futures Exchange building. In her hand she still tightly held the remote control with it's safety latch open and her thumb over the button.
"Don't"
It was all Uilliam could say as he stood still. His hands not trembling as they kept his rifle on her, his finger placing tension on the trigger. Seeing his reluctance the woman had a very somber expression, her emerald green eyes not blinking as they held his. Her forearm flexed, and tried to mash down on the button, and it was all brought to an end. The crack of Uilliam's rifle shot echoed for the few moments it took her lifeless body to crumple to the ground.
Placing his rifle back on safe, Uilliam's eyes closed as he stayed still taking a series of deep breaths. Reaching up with his hand, he spoke into the COMMs device on his tactical vest.
"Target.."
Feeling his voice about to waver, he stopped transmitting a moment to compose himself.
"Target down, detonator secured."
Suddenly the night sky lit up in greens, blues, golds and red as a fireworks display was starting on the beach below. Thunder claps, and showers of streaking light filled the air. Taking out a cigarette and lighting it, Uilliam walked slowly toward the side of the building facing the ocean, unable to look back on what he had just been forced to do. / "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do." - Confucius, Chinese philosopher & reformer (551 BC - 479 BC.) |

Edited by: Uilliam Nebel on 18/08/2008 00:21:54 One week earlier, Amarr Prime - The reconstructed Cathedral of Saint Tal-Romon....
"It really is beautiful isn't it? I mean, I know I should be sad seeing it here on Amarr Prime. Especially with how much it meant to the Lady Tash-Murkon. But I just can't help but still be moved by it no matter where it stands."
Uilliam remained quiet as Ekatan Yamarada kept talking, knowing it was better to just let the Commander of Tash-Murkon Internal Security go on until she came to her point. The two of them kept pace side by side as they walked, the spires of Tal-Romon cathedral rising up to the sky to their side. The cathedral would never be opened up to visitors, especially after it had been moved and rebuilt on Amarr Prime from Eclipticum. But still going to get a sight of it here had become a sort of pilgrimage amongst many Udorians.
"I had advised our Lady to have not taken the matter as far as she did when our beloved Emperor Doriam II decided to intervene and claim the cathedral as his own. I can understand why it was so important to her, being it is named for the first Udorian to have reached Sainthood in the Faith. But given that it was also the place where Aritcio Kor-Azor came to his judgement by the Speakers of Truth..."
Ekatan turned to Uilliam, a slight frown on her face.
"Well Aritcio was Doriam's son, and he was a father before he was Emperor."
Shrugging his shoulders as he kept walking, Uilliam kept waiting for her to come to a point. Stopping and turning to him, Ekatan poked him in the chest.
"You know it wouldn't kill you to humor me some Mister Nebel, and at least ask questions in feigned interest to hurry my story along."
Looking at her, then the hand she poked him with, Uilliam cleared his throat.
"All right, so your saying something on the nature of family bonds I take it?"
With that Ekatan just got a sour look, and then continued.
"I said ask questions, not to point out what I was obviously leading to."
With that she gave him a soft, but still effective jab to the ribs with her elbow before she continued on walking. Pausing to briefly rub at his side, Uilliam walked quickly to be back at her side.
"But since you saw fit to state it up front Mister Nebel, yes I was speaking toward the bonds of family. Before we were even blessed with the word of Almighty God's scriptures, we had family. It is a bond that follows use no matter where we go. But as the beloved Doriam II's case with this cathedral shows, sometimes those unbreakable bonds can be inconvenient, even so much as the source of our downfalls."
Peering into Uilliam's eyes, Ekatan took him by the arm as she spoke a tad more quiet.
"Sometimes, those of your blood keep up a struggle, which should be long passed. And in their zeal to pursue it, they put the rest of their kin in danger as they blindly follow it. And such may have become the case with some of our fellow Udorians my dear Uilliam."
Leaning her head against his shoulder, she asked him matter of fact like as they strolled together.

Edited by: Uilliam Nebel on 18/08/2008 03:05:51 Amarr Prime - Ammatar Consulate Office.
"So when did they hit your radar, and what for?"
Uilliam spoke in a interested tone as he stood looking over the display on the desk surface, it showed various documents, finger prints, and surveillance photos. Standing next to him was Hendik Golmuald an operative for the Ammatar Consulate's intelligence service, whom had come in from Bayuka in the Sazdih constellation of Derelik to share her findings with him.
"Well we thought they were part of a suspected Ushra'Khan cell that we were looking for, those ones whom were making the rounds on the black market for Gallente nano-explosive devices six weeks back. And we came across these strangers then. They also had been making inquires with our man whom was working under cover as an arms broker."
Uilliam nodded his head, as he lighted a cigarette.
"I remember reading the daily security briefing on that, when your agency learned they were planning to carry out an attack with it on Mekhios, at the slaver's trading market. It was excellent work by your department by the way."
Hendik gave him a sincere nod, as she kept talking and brought up some closer shots of the suspects faces taken in the surveillance photos. There were three men, and a woman, the men were plainly visible, however the woman was wearing a hood and veil of the type more conservative Amarrian's required their daughters to wear in the Ardishapur region.
"They only made contact with our man in person once, the other times were through those cheap disposable pre-paid COMMs devices. We were not able to run those down to anything useful, as you can just get one over the border in the Republic without so much as an ID. But we made a special note of them when the facial recognition software our lab techs utilized pinned them as being of Udorian descent.
Like I side though, they made contact with our UC in person the one time, inquired about some specialized nanites, then dropped off the radar again. And after forwarding what little we had to Ministry of Internal Order, they pointed us to you."
Uilliam nodded his head as he took a drag off his cigarette. Placing his hands on the counter top, he leaned forward to get a better look at the four alleged Udorians then looked back to Hendik, with a puzzled expression.
"So what kind of nanites, industrial or military explosive agents?"
Hendik just shook her head.
"No, thats another odd thing. All they gave our man was a universal stock number, which came back as some specialized quantum storage scrubbing agents, the type they use to destroy older and phased out data storage equipment at banks where customer account information and other sensitive data has been placed. While they are not in themselves a controlled or restricted nanite, they are very rare, and only made by a Caldari technology firm owned by Kaalakiota."

"Did you put in a call on it to Home Guard's security division?"
Hendik nodded.
"According to them, no unaccounted batches of this nanite. And no known stock piles of it anywhere. It's production run was ended three and a half years ago, after the specific family of eqiupment it was designed for also stopped production."
Dying out his cigarette on a near by ash tray, Uilliam went to replace his hood and cloak.
"Well thank you very much Hendik, I'll make sure we follow up on this information as far as we can. And again, excellent work."
A knowing smile crept on to her face as she gave a slight sigh. But spoke in a polite tone as she went to walk him out.
"You all ready have an idea who they are don't you?"
Looking to her, Uilliam took a brief look around them, seeing that no one else was watching.
"You know how it is sometimes, right hand has no idea what left hand is up to. Trust me though, this is not an Ammatar trust issue. I honestly think it may be more of an Udorian trust issue to be honest."
With that Hendik gave a slight chuckle, but then apologetically spoke.
"I'm sorry, it is just we are so used to being the ones held in suspicion. I hate to say so, but I'm glad it is someone else under the microscope for a change."
Uilliam gave her a knowing nod as he smiled and shook her hand.

Edited by: Uilliam Nebel on 19/08/2008 01:31:26 Tash Murkon Prime V - Moon I - Tash Murkon Family Bureau Station.
The 'Garden of the Faithful' as it was called took up an area equal to the volume of five square miles within the station. It possessed a full atmosphere, contained within the nearly two mile high tube structure that housed it. Aloft in the artificial sky were barge platforms circling, the combination of lower gravity and magnetic suspensors allowing them to float as clouds. Each one a separate and carefully tended to ecosystem, where the most vibrant and pleasing of flowers and plant life from across Amarrian civilization were cultivated. Each one also taking it's soil and plant life from a world where Udorian slaves had endured servitude to ascend toward salvation. At it's bottom a massive public park area had enough space for a small lake with a beach, and a wooded area that many station residents occasionally went camping in on weekends. On one side of it was the view into the space of the Udorian's adopted home system, with the first moon of Tash-Murkon Prime V passing by silvery bright every six hours with the station's orbit. On the other was a monument of holo-imaging which gave visitors the view of a distant horizon as could be found planet side, where sky would go blue with an animated star rising and setting every twelve hours then fade to night again to compliment the space facing side.
Most symbolic to many Udorian's was the garden barge which stayed in a set orbit at the gardens exact center. Here the soil was taken from Amarr Prime itself, dug out of the very home continent of the Udorians. A quarter of a mile in diameter disc, the bottom of it a brightly polished silver that glistened softly down on the tube below. The top a small paradise made up of the botanical treasures of their native soil. And at it's center a tall purest white marble obelisk over one hundred feet in height. At it's base was a large plaque made of platinum, which had a inscription in the ancient Udorian tongue, 'For those Fathers and Mothers, whom bore the brunt of our sins. And in humbling service to our Amarr brethren brought us their Udorian sons and daughters to the salvation and freedom of the Lord.' A pair of crude iron shackles hanged beside it that had a small golden key unlocking them.
It was the fall season cycle in the garden, and many of the trees where shedding their leaves with the cooler air. Standing on a barge that was gliding slowly past the center one, Uilliam took in the site of it's monument. A deep sense of pride filling him, but also a deeper sense of loss. So often he had in his prayers tried to place himself in the position of his ancestors, to understand the toil of their lives to the Amarrian Empire that they had endured with the fall of their own Empire and the eventual Reclaiming of all of Athra under the Amarr. Few where the Udorians whom did not keep in mind that their people where slaves themselves to the Amarr for a period of centuries. Some time passed as Uilliam stood their in silent prayer watching the obelisk drift past, and mourned for those who came before him, but also thanked them. |

It made his heart all the more heavy as he turned toward the small anti-gravity craft which he had used to reach the barge. Walking toward it, Uilliam tried to understand the mindset of those now confirmed Udorians that he had been briefed about on Amarr Prime. An Udorian was not a Matari, they majority had truly accepted the true faith of Amarr. While it was not with complete lack of bitterness, they had for the most part accepted their past and had instead chosen to move on toward an actual future. Their time in slavery having made them accepting of the harsh nature of life, and the indifference of the Lord's universe. It had also given them their drive to meet those obstacles, and perceiver toward achievement. And now after so long, even though many prejudices remained, they had their own noble heir an Udorian whom could be if God willed it an Emperor of all of Amarr to rule by All Mighty authority.
Taking a seat on the vehicle which was the fusion of a motor bike, and rocket powered sleigh, he looked over the information which he had downloaded regarding the 'Udat Shan', a fringe and highly secretive cult that believed they were utterly devoted to the teachings of Saint Tal-Romon. It gave Uilliam a horrible sense mixed of fear and anger. To see there were Udorian's whom in some misguided, and utterly idiotic sense of revenge or defiance where stalking the under world usually reserved for Matari terrorist, lawless pirates, and Godless liberal Gallente. His people had progressed so much, a thing which could be jeopardized by the actions of these fools and their idiocy.
The trail had lead him here, back home, and he was now in a race to track them down and stop them before they could do anything to damaging. Still though, how did one go about finding an Udorian amongst the greatest population center of them in the cluster... |

Tash Murkon Prime V - Moon I - Tash Murkon Family Bureau Station, the next day.
"Tac will sweep it out, then you come in. And no discussion on it Uilliam. This isn't a pod, you catch a bullet here and it is into the ground. Not some warm cloning facility light years away where they give you a glass of warm milk and make it all better as they sing you lullabies or whatever it is they do for you people in those places."
Uilliam listened and shook his head before replying with a smile.
"Ouch, I see you are as charming as ever Flynn."
"Yeah well, thats why your Mother still has me over..."
Sergeant Flynn stopped as he looked over at the young Ni-Kunni officer that was driving the Tac squad van. The young man was listening to Uilliam in the back, and Flynn in the passenger's seat, as both went back and forth. The officer was still snickering audibly with Flynn's last comment.
"What the hell are you laughing at?"
Hearing the Khanid sergeant ask with a bark into the ear, the young officer immediately got straight faced as he sat up and pretended to be very focused on driving. Satisfied that his subordinate was back in line, Flynn turned to talk with Uilliam again. The rest of the Tac squad sat up a little straighter on the bench seats in the back of the van as they saw Flynn turn their way.
"Listen Uilliam, you never worked Truth and Virtue before. These sub-humans are the lowest of the low. They thumb their noses at God and the Empire every chance they get."
Sitting back on the bench seat Uilliam crossed his arms as he retorted.
"I work anti terrorism and piracy Flynn, I'm sure I have seen worse..."
Before Uilliam could finish replying Flynn cut him off.
"No, no you haven't seen worse. These people are complete degenerates. They have torrid sexual relationships, in and out of wedlock. They go on and on with their high minded liberal ideals, as long as it doesn't cost them anything or curb their wants to do who knows what. And worst is the talking, and protesting, always with the I know my rights, thats inhumane, etc, etc.."
As Flynn finished, the Tac squad van pulled up to the front of a run down housing complex in the station's poorest urban level. Settling to the ground there was a sudden jostling as the now nervous driver put it down and cut the anti-grav unit to soon. The snarl on Flynn's face as he looked at the Ni-Kunni had Uilliam convinced the young officer was about to get out and set to running for his life.
"Say great landing there buddy, and they still didn't let you into pod pilot school huh?"
Shaking his head as he spoke, Flynn got out the passenger side door and pulled down the black mask he wore to cover his face. Reaching inside the van he grabbed his laser assault rifle, then slammed the door shut. |

Edited by: Uilliam Nebel on 20/08/2008 01:56:19 Edited by: Uilliam Nebel on 20/08/2008 01:54:34 All ready the other members of the Tac squad were filing out the van's back, donning their mask as well and checking weapons. With silent precision they fell in behind Flynn with weapons at the ready, and formed a snake line as they headed to the housing complex front entrance. The kids out in front of the building whom were playing came to a complete stop, and watched with gaping jaws of wonder as the Tac team went forward. They were dressed in head to toe black tactical gear, except for the shiny metal badges on their chest. A few near panicked mothers rushed up to heard the children away as fast as they could with the Tac team's approach.
Uilliam watched from a van window as Flynn's team made entry to the building, then listened over the van's radio as they headed up the three flights of stairs to the suspects apartment. Not a word was spoken between them as they switched over to the cybernetic devices each member had implanted for communication.
Suddenly there was a loud bang heard over the radio as a door was kicked in, and another when a flash grenade was set off. After that it was just a roar of loud authoritative forces shouting for people to get down. After a little over a minute an all clear was given over the radio by a team member and Uilliam and the driver got out of the van to head up and meet the others.
Uilliam suspected that these people wouldn't know anything about the group of four whom he was investigating. But as he had no other leads, his only choice was to ride along with the local law enforcement and see what turned up if anything and hope a break came.
As he headed through the dark and narrow stair well, its walls lined with graffiti and the stench of human waste, it was hard for him to believe that this was still Tash-Murkon. Even though the region had the best preforming economy of any other in the Empire it still had it's fair share of poverty and the urban decay that came along with it. Even station life was not outside the reach of the laws that governed such things if it was given enough time. |

Tash Murkon Prime V - Moon I - Tash Murkon Family Bureau Station, that night.
It was forty minutes to EST clock midnight, and Uilliam was standing in the kitchen unit of a studio apartment that had been designed for single working professionals. This one however was home to a family of six. They were recent refugees from the Ammatar Mandate, having fled as the war drew closer to their home. The father and mother stood facing the far wall with their hands on their heads. Two of Flynn's men were there on guard, hands on weapons and the safetys released. The children huddled together on the single couch, which folded out into the bed they all shared. The oldest daughter of nine sat cradling a new born, as the other two children clung to one another. Their crying had stopped but they were still terrified.
In his hand Uilliam held the father's comms unit, having initiated a download of all it's content through a secure network connection to the Ministry of Internal Order's intelligence and technology analyst. Across the hall in the next apartment, Flynn was wrapping up a 'toss down' of a young Gallente's place, whom had arrived in Tash-Murkon under suspicious circumstances. Uilliam saw no need to do that with these Ammatar. They were good people, a decent God fearing family that wished to start over. However until certain things were firmly checked out, he had to treat them like any other suspects. Clearing his throat as he stepped around the counter to the family area of the tiny apartment, Uilliam spoke in a lowered tone.
"Mister Lorahei Sir, turn around please."
The Ammatar did as Uilliam asked, his face held fear, put there was also the unmistakable mask of shame. Uilliam knew what it was born from, a sense of failing his family. He had moved them from a soon to be war zone, to the jewel of the Amarrian economy. And now he was stuck working a low wage job because he did not possess the formal education required to go after those livable wages available here. To finish that off, he hadn't even protected his family as now in the middle of the night, armed men were here in their apartment and he was powerless to do anything. Uilliam had pity for the man, not as he would a lesser person, but because he knew as a father their was no more unbearable feeling then believing you were letting those you loved and whom depended on you down.
"I just have to ask you, your neighbor, does he keep strange hours? Have odd guest coming and going? Do you ever see him moving packages, boxes, something like that?"
The man nodded his head no as he spoke in a tired voice.
"I,.. I'm sorry, I don't know, really. I usually am just here for five or four hours at a time to sleep before I go back to work. I wouldn't even begin to know."
Uilliam nodded his head in understanding, but he knew the procedure, as much as he hated it at times. But you had to push people, even those you did not want to, because what they might know could be far to important not to. However Uilliam spoke in a low voice, with his back to the children, as his own personal guilt tore at him.
"Listen, your a good man, you have a beautiful family here. Don't make me take that away from you just because you didn't speak up. That's what will happen, I'll put you through the system and you'll end up working a slave penal colony. And your family will end up either on the street, or right back where they came from on the border zone of the Mandate with the Republic. Be smart here, help yourself out, help your family out." |

Uilliam watched as Lorahei's face got flustered and his breathing quickened, the Ammatar wasn't able to keep eye contact with Uilliam as he seemed to be straining to think. Looking at him, Uilliam was sure the Ammatar did not believe he knew anything worth telling. Most likely there were just images of hes family in poverty, or caught up in the war playing out in graphic horror through Lorahei's mind as he desperately searched for something to reply to Uilliam with.
"You have to believe me Sir, I didn't even know it was a man in that apartment till you asked me, I, I'm sorry. I don't know what you want to hear. Please, I just.. please.."
As Lorahei seemed about to break down, Uilliam watched as Misses Lorahei reached out her hand to take his. As she did one of Flynn's men leveled his weapon, and the other took her arm as he tugged her back into place. Her soft sobbing the only sound in the room as she kept facing the wall with her hands atop her head again. And her husband now himself getting tears in his eyes as he stood looking at Uilliam with with an expression of desperately seeking mercy.
Right as Uilliam went to turn up the pressure further with another veiled threat disguised as a warning, he felt his COMMs device going off as an incoming message arrived. Holding up his finger to tell Lorahei to remain silent, he looked at it. The text message read 'Back ground check clean, COMMs info clean, no persons of interest among the relatives either.' Placing the COMMs device back in his pocket, Uilliam felt a wave of relief wash through him, but did not show it. Instead he looked up to Lorahei and began to talk in a somewhat warmer tone.
"All right, all right I believe you."
Looking to the two officers, Uilliam made a motion with his head and neck for them to step out of the apartment. Looking to one another, then back to Uilliam, they both complied going out into the hallway. As Uilliam turned back, he saw Misses Lorahei had turned around, and almost appeared to have made a lunge for him but her husband had quickly put his arms about her shoulders and held her back. His hands grip very tight, not out of needing to control her, but the gratitude he must of been feeling for being here to still do so. The sight of the anger and victim hood on her face gnawed at Uilliam as he starting talking again.
"Here Misses Lorahei, why don't you get to putting these children to bed. I'm sorry for the disturbance this..."
She did not even wait as she just walked past Uilliam with a scowl, going straight to her children. The look on her face seeming as if she was having to restrain herself from spitting on Uilliam as she held so much venom for him at the moment.
Holding Lorahei's COMMs in his hand, Uilliam reached out to the man to return it to him. Seeing the distress he had caused these innocent people in pursuing his investigation made it hard for Uilliam to look up at him when speaking. |

"Once again Mister Lorahei, I'm sorry for the disturbance."
Clearing his throat, he continued.
"In your address file I linked a name to a man who runs the station's engineering services at the space dock. I'd suggest you take a day off and go down there to talk to him, and tell him I sent you. I saw you went through technical training as a quantum communication engineer's assistant back in the Mandate, and you have a outstanding work history. He can always use the help of a good and smart worker."
Lorahei shook his head in reluctant thanks. But Uilliam could see that this incident had subjected him to facing his worst fears, and that it would no doubt leave him and his family traumatized for the next few days. As Uilliam walked out of the apartment, he closed the door behind himself and stopped to take a breath. The self hatred would pass soon enough, in the morning he'd be reminding himself that the brief moment of terror he had put in that family had been for the greater good, if they had known something that could save lives it was a necessary evil.
Needing to calm his nerves, Uilliam took out and lighted a cigarette. He could hear Flynn through the open door of the apartment ahead of him all ready shouting, and threatening, the sounds of him wrecking the suspects belongings as he ran-sacked the apartment. It would be to much for Uilliam to go in there now and deal with Flynn's method of interrogation after what just happened in the Lorahei apartment. Instead he would stop and enjoy a nice relaxing cigarette, and in a few minutes it would be back to work. |

Tash Murkon Prime V - Moon I - Tash Murkon Family Bureau Station, Day V. Sixteen past midnight. Tired from the long day of spot raids with the Tac team, Uilliam walked into the apartment where Flynn was questioning the Gallente. The Sergeant's face was molten red as his voice was a near growl.
"What you think Daddy back home in the Federation is gonna buy you out of this?"
Standing over the suspect, Flynn was looking down on him and using his intimidating size to stress the situation. Uilliam nodded to the other two officers who were standing guard in the room when he came in, and walked over behind the chair where the Gallente was. Flynn looked up briefly to Uilliam to make eye contact then continued on, stopping to kick something on the ground toward Uilliam's direction.
"My guys will be looking through all your stuff Morris, they are going to find something, we just don't come knocking on people's door by chance. Now if your have a brain in that head, that allows your mouth to say something other then the typical free will without consequence rhetoric, you'll confess to it before we find it."
Morris just sat quietly, looking at Flynn with a mask of indifference. There wasn't a hint of worry, or concern in his demeanor as he remained quiet. Morris was not even bothering to look about the room where all his personal possessions had been thrown about, some of which were being destroyed under Flynn's combat boots as he walked on them. Clearing his throat, Uilliam nodded to Flynn for his attention, then nodded toward the apartment exit as he proceeded to step out. Sighing with annoyance Flynn walked out after him, closing the apartment door behind himself.
"Don't give me that effective interrogation technique crap Uilliam, I know what I am doing here."
Uilliam stared at Flynn as he tried to answer.
"Flynn this man.."
"This man is a Gallente, and also a known anti-Amarr political radical with sympathies for, and most likely friends in the Matari terrorist networks.."
"I agree and.."
Before Uilliam could finish Flynn cut him off again.
"He is also I remind you wanted for questioning by the DED in relation to bank and securities fraud so.."
"Flynn! Shut up all ready. He is our guy."
Lowering his voice again, Uilliam just shook his head as Flynn stood confused. Seeing that Flynn needed additional clarification Uilliam went on.
"Did you notice that mutli-display holo frame you managed to step on several times? There is a picture in it, looks like some kind of graduation. Anyhow I noticed when you kicked it off to the side.."
"Yeah well it was in my way, so.."
"Will you be quiet for just one second in your life Flynn? It is a group shot of about six people, the suspect is on the far right, one of my investigation's primary suspects is second to the left."
Uilliam kept quiet as he let that realization stand for a few moments. Taking a breath as he thought on it, Flynn nodded and went to go back in the apartment.
"O.K. then, thanks, I'll confront him with that and.."
Uilliam quickly took Flynn by the arm, stopping him from continuing on.
"Flynn, don't tell him anything and don't ask him anything at all involving that picture, do you understand me? He has no idea we are here in regards to that, he right now just suspects that he got caught up for something else, most likely the bank and securities charges.
And by the way, there is nothing in the apartment, so your wasting your time.."
"What do you mean there is nothing in the apartment? How can you know that?"
"Look at him Flynn, he is just sitting back, doing nothing. Not even getting nervous or anxious as you toss his place. No suspect I have ever seen is that together when they are sitting on top of something that may get them a penal slave colony sentence or worse."

Tash Murkon Prime V - Moon I - Tash Murkon Family Bureau Station, Day V. One in the morning.
"Stand up Morris."
Uilliam motioned for the man to get on his feet. Looking Uilliam in the eye unwaveringly, Morris stood up awkwardly with his hands in cuffs behind him. Taking him by the arm, Uilliam started to walk Morris out of the apartment. The two of them going slowly through the hall to the stairs, as the Tac team secured the area and front of the building.
"I feel bad about a lot of things.."
It was the first time Morris had spoken at all, his voice was low and barely heard by Uilliam as he turned them both to go down the stairwell. Figuring it would be wiser to start a rapport with Morris now for when they would be questioning him later, Uilliam responded.
"Well when people get caught for their crimes they usually do Morris."
"Nah, I don't feel bad about the money I took. Anyone in the cluster dumb enough to invest with a start-up that only has a GALnet site to it deserves to be ripped off."
"So what then?"
Morris looked to Uilliam for a second, as they stepped slowly down the narrow stair well.
"That I never stopped to see the truth of things."
"In regards to what?"
"People, the cluster, the circumstances we live under. I for so long wanted to believe that things were black and white, good and bad, that I never once learned to see that we are all just people."
"Your talking like a man giving a last confession Morris. Relax, your not going from here to be executed."
Morris just snorted with a near laugh.
"Yeah, well I think this is a situation where I know more then you Mister."
"Oh really, how?"
With that the Gallente just froze up again on Uilliam, going quiet. Coming to the bottom of the stair well, Uilliam guided him through the door way into the entry hall of the building.
"Stop here Morris."
Uilliam stood holding the mans arm as he awaited the all clear over the COMMs channel from the Tac team to walk the suspect out. A minute turned into several, then became an anxiously long six minutes. Uilliam reached down and opened the channel on his COMMs to the others.
"Tac Four, what's the delay?"
A brief crackle of static came back, then the voice of one of the squad members.
"Cap One, suspicious movement in windows across the street. The Sergeant is taking a look now, hold your position."
Uilliam noticed that Morris was staring at him as he heard the news. The Gallente's face seemed different now, it wasn't a mask of cool and calm. It was the look of someone whom looked defeated in some way, their spirit broken.
"What is it Morris?"
Uilliam was feeling very wrong about the situation, his hand going to the pistol holstered at his side. Uilliam's eyes looked back and forth from the two entrances of the building here in it's main hall way.
"They are not going to let me walk out of here Mister. They can't, and I know why, I don't blame them either."
If Morris was looking to toy with Uilliam's nerves, he was doing an excellent job with that line.

It was then that Uilliam heard the gun fire start erupting in the street ahead of them, from the direction of the front entrance. Immediately Uilliam pushed Morris back against the hallway wall, as he drew his weapon and pointed it in that direction. Just as quickly, the two members of the Tac team who had been watching the back way, burst through the door into the hall. And rushed past Uilliam and Morris on their way out the front.
When the gunfire stopped, Uilliam stepped away from Morris. Motioning for him to stay still where he was. Going to the center of the hallway Uilliam opened the COMM's channel again.
"Tac Four, what is the situation."
Uilliam was relieved when he heard Flynn's voice replying.
"Cap One, situation secured. Someone had a remote automated rifle set up here. Preforming a sweep to check for others. Hold position with suspect."
Looking back to Morris, as Uilliam placed his pistol back in it's holster. He could see that the Gallente was very shaken now.
"Morris, I can't help you unless you tell me what is happening. Who set that up? Who wants you dead?"
Morris just crumpled to the ground against the wall. His hands covering his face as he sobbed. Then he began to talk as Uilliam took a few steps toward the front doors to see better what was happening.
"It was Rahjika who got me in this. She knew I needed somewhere to go once I got into trouble in the Federation. She told me, told me I could come here and turn my life around. I didn't know she just wanted my expertise on bank systems. I really wanted to change, I just.."
Turning to look at Morris, Uilliam couldn't understand why he was so quickly falling apart.
"Who is Rahjika? Morris, you have to stop and clearly tell me what this is about."
Morris seemed oblivious to Uilliam as he rambled on some more.
"Rahjika, she knew I wanted out, knew I'd rather go serve my time in the Federation then go ahead with her plan. Thats why her and the others started me on the ViToc treatment, so I couldn't leave. They slipped the toxin in with my Frentix, then told me about it. After that I had to complete the interface bridge they needed to get in the network.."
Morris stopped suddenly, and both him and Uilliam heard it. It was a thumping noise coming from above them. Uilliam looked to the ventilation cover where it was loudest. Suddenly the cover was smashed off as an object punched through it into the hallway. Instinctively Uilliam tossed himself to the ground, through the doorway into the stair well. A wave of searing heat, and light so powerful it was agonizing on the eyes followed him.
As Uilliam tried to get his bearings he could smell the smoke and hear the fire alarms ringing. His eyes though were completely useless, stinging with pain. All over his body was the sensation of heat, and he could not even make the effort to move. Laying there motionless he became aware of the sensation of water raining down on him as the sprinkler system went off. Just as he lost consciousness he heard Flynn's voice calling to him. / "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do." - Confucius, Chinese philosopher & reformer (551 BC - 479 BC.) |
