2 clients seem to be working now after following the instructions.
HOWEVER, I did not do the following:
_________________ Then....
Epty Cache Folder, on a NEWLY installed and configured clients, follwing these instructions: 1. Open Finder 2. Go to Home 3. Open Library 4. Open Preferences 5. Open EVE Online Preferences (Remember, you will have a Secondary folder for the second client, so do exactly he same thing to it) 6. Open p_drive 7. Open Local settings 8. Open Application Data 9. Open CCP 10. Open EVE 11. Move all the files and folders to Trash. (File called History.txt, Folders called: "c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility", "Cache" and "settings" 12. Restart your client __________
Nevertheless, it all seems to be working fine. What was the purpose of the above instructions? I seemed to have not needed to do any of that to make things work.

That's the "clearing the cache" procedure.
If anything seems to be less than perfect with your client, that's the first thing you should try (and the first thing they tell you to try if you petition a problem).
It's also good practice to do it periodically with the exception that only the cache subfolder, and not the settings subfolder, is to be deleted. The settings, instead, you should backup regularly and eventually restore it from backup, if something is not as expected.
Please, spend 1 minute of your time and check this out

to be honest, the easiest and quickest way at the moment to run multiple accounts is to use the script here: http://code.google.com/p/eomultiacct/
i just tried it and set up 3 copies of the app (using linked files to save diskspace) within about 10 seconds.
to only problem is that it requires you to use the Terminal to install/run it. I wonder if it's possible to build a simple GUI wrapper around it so that it is more accessable to users who aren't so keen on using the command line -- --- one day we're all gonna die, and then we'll see who's laughing! |

Is this procedure also applicable if you already have a single client installed? I want to start running a second client (hauler alt yet to be created) and I wonder if it requires me to reinstall my first client as well.. I don't want to resort using the pc alongside my macbook pro for running two clients.

that script requires that you've already got a client installed anyway - so it'd work perfect for you. just run it so that it creates a single copy. then you can run your main char with your current install, and your hauler alt on the copy. -- --- one day we're all gonna die, and then we'll see who's laughing! |

This is great news, I don't know why we didn't think of it before...
I've been thinking of doing something like that too. However there are a few things that would still need to be decided. Like: use relative or absolute symlinks? Absolute means you can relocate the copy, but not the "original". Relative means you can relocate both, as far as you move them together. You can in both cases rename the copy and in neither case rename the original.
First of all: why not use a hard link instead of a symlink? It solves nearly all problems of moving or renaming the "original".

My tests are not related to functionality: I'm pretty much sure there's no problem in that regard. It's more a question of system security. I personally created a ~/Applications directory and chmodded it to 700 (most other existing subdirectories of ~ are 700). I put my clients there and they are therefore decently secure (and private to my account only). Also I always use a non-administrative account.
However most users use an administrative account (in unix terms that means it's a sudoer account).
Thats is not really correct. They use an account that is allowed to sudo. That is by no means an administrative account like under windows.

And also put the client in /Applications and probably the copy too. Using symlinks improperly in that case would be as risky as using them improperly in /bin or in /etc on the ordinary unix setup.
Sure we do not have viruses. But that does not mean we need to open up doors, right?
That's the part I've not yet explored.
Sorry but this is not correct either. 1) Symlinks always take into account the access rights of the file they link to. It is completely irrelevant where you place the "copy" and what "rights" the copy "seem to have". 2) a virus or exploit always runs under the access rights of the user running the application. so chmod-ing it to 700 makes no sense. Because you still are yourself when you start the application (EVE in this case) and the application still can do everything YOU CAN DO (e.g. deleting files in /USERS/<your name> directory
By chmod-ing you only protect your EVE copy and your original of EVE from other users attempts of changes ;D and not from viruses or anything else at all.
Nevertheless, thanx for posting your advices (all of you) as this is very welcome!

Because we are linking to a directory, not to a file. Granted you could re-create the directory structure and then hardlink all the files in there, but this would be much more work.
Yes I do know that OsX does let you create hardlinks to directories. But doing that is very dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing and I do not want to open that particular can of worms.

They use an account that is allowed to sudo. That's exactly what I wrote: a sudoer account IS an account that is allowed to sudo. No, it isn't an administrative account in the Windows sense. It is an administrative account in the Os X (and Unix) sense. Which is exactly what I wrote.

Symlinks do not take into account the access rights of the file they link to if what you are trying to do is change where the symlink points to. Which is exactly the sort of trick an attacker would try. Also note that there are two places you can play with symlinks here: the client appbundle and the preferences directories.
Besides this is a very old thread and my post is old too. When I stated I did not yet check anything abut how the EvE client manages permissions I did really mean it: at the time, for what I knew, one of the 4 or 5 processes (I'm counting the auto-updating case too) that can be spawn from the eve client could have been SGID or SUID. Further investigation and newer threads did report that symlinking (expecially the Resources dir in the appbundle) is both safe and usefull.
About the chmod 700, you did not read what I have written. I chmodded the ~/Applications folder that I created. That is a system folder that is not created by default but you can create yourself. It's supposed to contain application installations that are "personal" to a single user. If created it should be chmodded to 700 and you should also add the "group:everyone deny delete" ACL (but I forgot to mention it in the previous post).
Please, spend 1 minute of your time and check this out

Noob using terminal (and at Eve). Would anyone provide the keystrokes in terminal once the first line of the above url instruction is entered? I have a new iMac and afraid I'll mess it up. I did download and update a second client which I put in my documents folder. Both worked once and now when I open the second client the first locks up.
Would greatly appreciate any help/instruction sent to '[email protected]'. thx

Hello,
I've been runing multiple EVE accs with a single, unmodified client without 3rd party apps for a while now and it seems to work just fine. The way to do that is open a terminal and type:
open -n "/Applications/EVE Online.app"
The "open" command is a shell command for launching an application or opening a document. The "-n" command instructs it to open a new instance (otherwise it would just bring the current instance to foreground).
This method conserves space and simplifies patching. I suppose that the clients share the same cache folder and overwrite each other's system settings (but NOT character-specific settings) but I've never had any problems with running two clients this way so I suppose it's okay.
Is there a particular reason why this should not be done?

Being a bit of an old noob and new to a mac I tried the script but I'm a bit lost so I'm hoping some of the more technical minded folk could give me a hand :-)
I launched the terminal, did the First Time Checkout, then Run the Script, not quite sure what to do after that. I tried the Example but kept getting No such file or directory.
Help appreciated.

actually, last time i tried that script, it didn't work for me at all - the copies it created wouldn't launch. so i went back to doing it the old way by hand
recently i wrote down a step-by-step guide of what to do for a friend - figured i might as well put it on a webpage and make it available here too in case it's useful for anyone.

ok, I guess I get it wrong, you cannot logint with the same username and choose two different characters. so you need two subs :(
thanx :)

Senyru, can you or someone who can put it in a simpler form, please tell me how to currently run two accounts on my iMac 24"--I understand some of this but a lot is WAY over my head. Just want to be able to window each EVE session , run Safari if needed and have fun. Just got a second monitor and can't window eve even after following the directions here. Please help!
