I'm fairly down the line in my gallente train and am about to cross spec minnie. This is for their hacs/recons. Primarily vaga/rapier, two very uber boats. And if you have your drone skills up/ gunnery secondary skills(sharpshooter/traj. analysis ect.) then it is a relatively short train to get to almost full dps on minnie boats, due to the fact that projectiles use the same secondary skills as hybrids. Energy weapons too, but...DOWN W AMAAR! :-) No seriously though, being able to fly both gallente and minnie recons is amazing in it's self. The arazu for long range warp scrambling and the rapier for long range webbing.
On the other hand if you have t2 rails I might suggest caldari because half of their ships have crazy hybrid turret range bonuses making them super snipers. But then you need to train your shield tanking skills...

when you crostrain a nice add is to chose the faction will allow you to fly faction ships. For example sasha ships require both caldari and amarr.
Since you are gallente, it would be wise to train for minnie since will open your doors also to Angel and serpentis ships ( machariel & vindicator anyone? ). Of course thats just a general rule. Its not mandatory, and if you realy like a ship thats caldari or amar i dont see the point you dont train for a ship you like. |

Depends on what you're comfortable with. As a Gallente your emphasis is generally on armor tanking, hybrid weapons, and drones. Those are all good and useful, if you really want to crosstrain though just remember these:
As a Hybrid weapon user, your gun support will translate to pretty much any race. You share weapons with the Caldari, who in addition have missiles. Right now , missiles are situational in PvP, and really more fleet-oriented than solo/small gang. Also, Caldari are shield tankers/snipers, so you would have to train a lot of additional skills to use them effectively (ahield tanking skills, missile skills).
If you crosstrained to Amarr, the ONLY thing you'd have to add to your repertoire are Amarr ship skills and energy weapons. That's IT. LAsers can do crazy DPS with the right setup, and Amarr really begin to shine from cruisers on up. So, they have the pewpew, if you don't mind being limited in damage types. Your armor-tanking skills would translate over directly, as Amarr armor-tank too. Amarr use drones too, so you're good to go there.
If you crosstrained to Minmatar, you'd have to learn projectile weapons. Additionally, since Minmatar use both shield-tanking AND armor-tanking, you'd have to learn both. Minmatar ships are faster than the other races, but have as a general rule less of a tank. Minmatar BS and above have a reputation for being poor, I personally can't say if that's true or not.
So, to sum up: You'd have to learn the least amount of skills to fly Amarr - you just would be limited in the types of damage-dealing you do.
The choice is yours, of course.

Edited by: Kazuma Saruwatari on 20/08/2008 01:14:16 Amarr, however, are no slouch in what they do best: Tank and Gank. They arent fancy with Ewar, speed warfare, or anything else for that matter.
Think of Amarr military doctrine in their ships as basically being that Heavy from TF2. Tough as frikin nails to take down, not someone you want to **** off lest you mess with his minigun, but if the other team knows what they're doing, a proper sniper shot to the head (read: EVE turret disruption, ECM) and the big boy goes down.
Most combatants who have half a brain will either disengage once a Amarr DPS BS gets too close, or primaries it (tank comes into play here), or goes to Ewar to keep it down.
Thankfully, most combatants dont even have quarter of a brain to even comprehend that.
I crosstrained from Caldari to Amarr for a good reason, and I'm enjoying it immensely. |
