Hey guys, as you can see i'm a relatively new player to the game, and i really liked the idea of being a miner, so i set up my char to have lots of mining related skill etc. I've worked up to where i now have osprey with 3x miner II's, and i've also got a badger MKII with about 12000m3 of space. Basically i fill up my 3x giant secure containers, fill up my osprey's cargo hold (about 940m3) and then port to base, grab the badger, port back, grab the cargo, port to base, unload, rinse/repeat.
I've found that i can make about 1.2mil isk/hour doing this. It just seems pretty low, especially since you can just run lev II missions and make that much money in 2-3 missions, which generally doesn't take an hour to do.
I had hoped that mining would be more profitable due to the "boring" factor, but it just seems that at this stage in the game its really not.
My question is this, is there really a point in going towards mining barges and ultimately the hulk, or am i really going to be wasting my time?
To be honest mission running just is a lot more fun, and if you can realistically make 70-80% of the isk as you can mining doing that, i'd rather take the loss ya know? |

So...if its more fun...and you make more isk...then whats the problem? |

My advice is to do what you enjoy. If your main goal is to make iskys as fast as possible, then mining probably isn't the way to go. Missioning will pay better and trading potentially better than that.
If your going to mission run, get a Raven as soon as you can. I went the gunboat route and my compadre with virtually the same skill set can run missions 50% faster. Learn to salavage to, that's a boatload of Isk. |

mining in empire just to sell is not worth it compared to mission running.
mission running is not only more profitable, and more fun, but also gaining faction with npc corps is verry important. beond that the LPs made are worth alot of iskies as well.
on the flip side... to make ALOT of isk mining not only do you need to be in a hulk but if you are going to mine in empire you need to manufacure. I am a miner with over 15 mill skill points into it. i mine in 0.0 and make well over 100million / hour. my fellow corpmates cannot compare to that ratting.
also you may need to add on the cost of amunition, which could possibly set aside vs. the cost of mining crystals if you use them. |

Mining is a slow way of gaining minerals and cash by comparison to running level 4 missions. If you have the time to train to a hulk, you have the time to train to a raven.

You'll be getting at best around 8 mil ISK/hour with a Hulk. Probably less. You can get that much speed-running L3s. You can get much more running L4s. You can start speed-running L3s before you can train for a Hulk properly. Draw your own conclusions.

The main reason people mine as far as I can tell is that they can do it without paying much attention and with little to no risk of loss. Other than that, it hasn't been worth doing in a long time. |

Mostly mine to have a break from missions, its relaxing i tell you that. Watcha movie move some ore. Missions and pew pewing you must stay a bit focused on the game.
Well at start it takes sometime to earn "more" isk by mining, slow progress from start to hulk. If ya can have a 2nd account as hauler for example, so you dont have to bother about the small sec cans or can flippers.
it also depends on what you are mining. |

Aye it really depends on where you are, but I'll say that outside of playing the market, there is no better and more consistent way of making money than by doing level 4 missions. |

Without question running missions in empire are much more profitable than mining. Even if you manufactor, you generally will bring in more minerals from the mission loot than you can mine, plus you will also have the salvage to build with as well. However, if you have a second account then mining will become profitable as you can mission with one and mine with the other. I also have my hulk cargohold fitted out to over 16K which cuts out the need of a hauler and eliminates the "griefers".

A miner mines for the sake of mining.
Is it the fastest way to earn ISK ? - No Is it the best way to earn ISK ? - Who cares
A miner mines for there is no better way to earn ISK.
If you don't understand well then perhaps the path of the miner is not for you.

mining is awesome for getting low effort/attention required isk, what i do is i read a book while mining, and usually warping back and forth from station to belt, sure its not the fastest way to mine, but it is quite safe |

Yes, it is possible to make a good living pre-hulk. But not in empire. Join a 0.0 renting corp and go mine crokite. You should be able to pull in about 5m/hour in your osprey without trying too hard.
Oh, and the only time mining will be more profitable than missioning or ratting is if you run 4+ accounts at once. It's also something you can do semi-afk while reading, doing homework, watching tv or the kids, etc. |

Well i very much appreciate all the responses guys.
I guess i was mistaken. I've been an MMO player for a very long time, and with most of those games mining/ore running/harvesting (whatever it happened to be called) was almost always the best money in the game, and generally it was b/c it was mind numbingly boring. I wrongfully assumed that was going to be the case in this game.
I'm actually kind of happy that it isn't really the best money until really end game (as the above poster was talking about pulling 100mil/hr, etc) and only because of a risk/reward type of situation.
So now i know i can kinda focus on just mission running. I've already got all the skills for a BC i just needed to make the money for it.
I think maybe once i get a battleship under my belt i'll go back to training towards a hulk ;-).
Thanks again everyone. |

Yep, go earn isk doing something you find fun. Personally I haven't mined, ratted or run missions for over 2 years now (what a waste those skills are). I just don't really enjoy it / have time for it and earn far more in other ways ;) |

I'd say it'd generally be a good idea to try to forget everything you learned in other MMOs when it comes to Eve. |

I'm confused though if you leave empire space I work along side a mining corp.... I can make a lot of isk per hour ratting the exact amount varies heavily depending on what is going on. The miners though seem to always be able to pull a solid 50 mil per hour never much up or down unless gang bonuses or bigger operations and pay outs. I guess what I'm trying to say is in the end mining will make more then missions will... but you will have to put in some risk and sp. |

Mining, unlike missions (and ratting to an extent), is based in terms of profit exclusively on where you mine. Mining arkonor with excellent skills results in a gross of 50-60m an hour (depending on gang bonuses). Mining tritanium generates between 7-10m an hour.
Mining also scales better than missions, you can get a second or third account going at the same time to take your ISK/hour up through the roof. I do the three-character system and I pull in just shy of 100m an hour. |

I mine on one client whilst playing my main. I think alot of people do this. Having a mining/industrial alt is a low risk way of making ISK without paying much attention to the toon. This way I don't have to pay attention to my alt and it still brings in ISK. Not much ISK but it's pocket money for my main. |

its worth it if you enjoy it, even if you make 1 ISK per hour tbh. Too many sad lonely people here atm treat eve like a job and try to convince me that their time is money lol. |

Edited by: Dennmoth Ferdier on 21/08/2008 13:54:05 Everyone's talking about empire mining, I went down to 0.0 to mine arkonor during the first two days after getting my retriever, and I was rolling in dozens of millions week after that. Training to a retriever doesnt take much time at all, and will surely outweigh all missions available at the same SP range. 0.0 is the way to go, if you like mining and iskies.
edit: and I mine tops 2 hours a day. |

Mining's actually decent source of passive income. I know sys./network admins or other techie guys bringing their lappies to work (or installing Eve on their machines) and mine away when they're free. Hell, wish I could do that. |

Edited by: Gimpb on 21/08/2008 15:51:58 I don't personally mine but a hulk in 0.0 seems to be able to net roughly 30-40 an hour--that's somewhere around double the pay of Lv4s or 0.0 ratting.
This of course requires risk, investment, logistics, friends, etc. but the reward is there if mining is what you like. |

why not skill up to fly a BS, most BSs make good mining vessels and there are a few that out mine a retriever such as:
Apoc Abby Rokh
These BSs (provided they are set up correctly) can make excellent mining vessels and if you get bored of mining you can use them in missions as well. That way you dont have to devote yourself to a mining skill-tree.
I would advise, if you haven't done so already, to check out Halada's mining guide (just google it, or perhaps someone can provide a link for you) as it gives excellent advice on the entire subject. -----------------------------------------------
