picking up the baton of "hey i've got an idea for EVE planetside"
First and foremost, the phrase "new and old" has to be used:
A new train of thought for the EVE universe, but an old one for us terestrially challenged on planet earth:
gravity, aerodynamics, gravity, distance, did I mention gravity?
simply put, in space, the shape and size/mass of an object is not a factor as much as when it's fighting against gravity: it requires a *relatively* small force to move 1,000,000Kg in space compared to what you'd need to get that object off the ground.
so even a frigate would require nothing short of ludicrous amounts of thrust just to get it airborne, never mind high-speed manouvers and escape velocity... it would in essence be like trying to do the same with it's modern naval counterpart.
aerodynamics: in relation to the above, if it's going to 'fly' in atmosphere it's feesably going to have to be able to FLY... (think it through you'll get the point, Promise)
distance: we, in EVE, are all used to ships that can lob a variety of different munitions clean over the 100km mark... consider for a moment, that this in most warfare consditions would be referred to as 'over the horizon' yes, pelting hundreds of tons of various explosives at something you can't even see...
>>>>>>>>
what I'm suggesting, or is at least mulled over:
a new class(es) of ships, small by EVE standards but capable of entering atmosphere and carrying out a number of roles, all equally capable of spaceflight albeit in a somewhat vulnerable manner:
Air-superiority - ave. size toting the most firepower and durability, but lacking somewhat in speed and manouverability.
Interceptor - smallest of the bunch but toting the best manouverability, and capable of super-sonic flight.
Ground bombing - either directly a bomber or something I'll go into in a bit ;)
Salvaging/Mining - equipped to fall out the sky, in relative safety OFC, maybe some skimming ability but otherwise stuck on the dirt.
now we're all used to seeing acceleration gates in deadspace, so is it so unrealistic to find a similar structure left behind by our ancestors on the various worlds scattered across new eden, built for the purpose of catapulting mined resources etc back into space?
>>>>>>>>
Back to bombing, I had this peach of an idea: some of you may find it interesting to know that the space shuttle orbits the planet earth at some 100-300km now, since my proposed little ships will be unable to bring a massive amount of firepower to the field, how about painting hardened ground targets for bombardment from your ally in space in thier BS holding a low orbit? also given the speed at which most planets rotate is well beyond any ship in the EVE universe, this could also give an interesting twist in that there would be an "operational window" where your bombardment would have to take place, or have to wait til it comes past again.
Food for thought, that's all ;)
note to trolls, this is hypothetical, just an idea. go flame someplace else.
if this sparks anyones imagination: you're welcome to add it on :)

Last year at Fanfest they showed off some preliminary concept art for ground and air vehicles, part of planetary warfare. God only knows how far along it is now, but the idea was to do some sort of strategic assaults on the surface of the planet by deploying them from capital ships, such as a dreadnought.
I don't think any of that had to do with actually flying our ships down there. Though I'd love to see a Moa try to maintain some altitude with all that awesomely aerodynamic styling. :D

The propulsion used does not adhere to the Newtonian laws as we would apply them to space flight. Who knows if our ships are even affected by gravity?
As for weapons, all you need in an atmosphere is smartbombs. |

Actually if you read the back story, you will see that tritanium reacts voilently with the atmosphere, as in it explodes... so no classic ships going down on planets |

Surely you would need troop carriers to make planet fall and such. Could be a 'mini-game' maybe. Stay in orbit with your EVE ship, lauch troops, and then UI change to Dune II/Emperor . Or decending to dock first, and then whatever you can do on the planet.
Although this way it starts to sound alot like Star Trek online (although that's still years away).

or you know, you could read the book which talks about how atmospheric warfare will work |

ah, ppl always make the same mistakes by taking todays "laws" by granted. They only are till we know better, and new laws get formulated.
Doesnt mean gravity wont still be gravity, but what tells you we will still be limited by it? Same for other concepts. |

First, I hope that atmospheric flight uses a joystick, is thrust forward (no hovering), fighter-pilot 'let me be Top Gun' action. Lasers, blasters, missiles, autocannons; forward firing, line up my target and blow him out of the sky.
Secondly, I hope we get all new ships. As many have pointed out, trit is explosive. Plus, can you imagine how the handling would be on something like a Rifter? Bah! Fighters, bombers, etc. New skills for handling these ships, too.
Thirdly, make the scale for atmospheric flight miniscule in comparison to the space game. Let us get the impression that these ships we fly in space are HUGE, and thus give an explanation on why they don't handle like fighters themselves.
Finally, provide enough options for planetary combat, including missions, planetary defense, etc; so that those types of players who would never be interested in EvE space combat might be able to stick with fighting on planets all day, every day.
So yeah, make atmospheric flight unique and almost a different game, but have the two cause reactions on one another (orbital bombardment, planet-side defense batteries, etc). Make planets very valuable assets, from the facilities on them to the profit generation. Make them a meta-game in themselves. |
