Just thinking.. wouldn't it be nice if we had a very minimal client which is able to run on just about any old PC for those times when you don't have access to your main PC or on a crappy laptop or something? Think back to the old days of vector graphics (like elite) and very basic windows.
OK. I'm annoyed coz my work laptop won't run eve and I need to change a skill and have to wait til I get home lol.
Just musing. |

If your computer can't run Eve with the classic Dx8 content, you're in serious trouble. |

Edited by: Saietor Blackgreen on 21/08/2008 13:26:03 I wonder is there's a way to simply tweak DirectX settings somehow to make it render some sort of wireframe, just omitting all the Z-buffering, texturing. lighting and stuff.
Have no idea if or how it can be done.
This could make it possible to run EVE practically on anything, as long as client believes it has all the environment compatible and working.
BTW, there is a DirectX emulator, or some kind of program like that! Not sure it can help to run EVE faster, but it surely makes it possible to run some games on laptop integrated graphics, otherwise unsupported by the game.
I used it to run new King's Bounty game on laptop with fairly good CPU and memory, but a very primitive Intel 9xx integrated video, not supported by game engine. |

Use your laptop to remote control your pc and run eve on your pc...
It will be slow as hell but if an iphone can do it, I sure hope your laptop can.
Also evelite is a dead project I believe, so no chance of getting eve on my pda unless I do ^^^ which I cba to set up and my pc would destroy my electricity bill if it was on all the time. |

try running the safe mode version of the client. before logging in goto the settings option and uncheck every single graphics option
set the cache to low/none (probably dont have alot of extra mem in that thing)
Turn the resolution down to it's lowest setting
Turn the color setting to it's minimum also.
After all that you should be able to run it on a circa 1990 PC |

Activisions Mechwarrior II had "SQUID" mode which let you view everything in Wireframe mode... It was Very Cool and the Framrate went through the Roof (such as they were in them days) Lowering the Resoltion and Graphics options is just not the same... |

This pops up every once in a while on the forums. The usual CCP response is that they probably could, but wouldn't want to, because lets face it they want the game to be played as a whole experience, not as Blips on a Screen Online.
Then again, in most fleet situations people keep zoomed so far out all it looks like is a bunch of blips on the screen + and overview. :)

hahaha OP wants the game changed b/c his commodore 64 cant run eve...think about splurging a bit on a new pc, rather than asking them to scale the game back so you dont have to. |

This would probably work well for fleet battles lol, at the rik that you might not be able to see whats going on on the screen if everything looked the same and there were still over 100 ships in grid...
But even just overview mode, surely ccp can make a list of ships that doesn't lag lol. Wouldd't be the same though.

I'd love it if they could just give me an overview with a list that doesn't shuffle around when I'm trying to click and target someone.

Hehe. I guess they could do that by making the CNTRL" key freeze the overview for as long as you're pressing it. |

You can make DirectX render in Wireframe only mode, but it generally disables things like Occlusion and Z-Buffering and makes things slow down dramatically as you're suddenly rendering the stuff you couldn't see before.
If your work laptop can't even run the classic EVE client though ... wow; perhaps you should donate it to a museum |

I like the fancy graphics, and the old client is working well. It'd be nice tho to be able to customize some light effects, nebulas, sunlight, and such. In some systems/cases it's a little too much. |

this. you dont want a wireframe mode, you want a "no shading, no textures, block ships" mode. it would look a lot like elite actually
i'm for it personally.
EDIT: see, i open up a lot of tabs when i check this forum in the morning. and then i forget which ones i posted in already as i flip back and forth reading them. and then i look like an idiot after posting in the same one 3 times. |
