Retired.
Last major pit I was in was during Pantera. Someone dislocated my bad knee and I still made it in for 3 more songs.

Sorry to hear about the knee but it was a proper band to have it happen to
Actually I am semi-retired, but I did get a friggan boot to the head this past Friday at a Municipal Waste Reunion show. I play lif3guard, I stand on the edge of the pit and I jump in and pick people up when they have bottomed out and jump in for the occasional song epending on the band.

Yeah I remember going to the misfits (kinda, was pretty trashed) and my friend was in the pit to the point of exhaustion so I ran down there to pull him out and outta nowhere he flips around and headbutts me in the eye.
Fun night that was. Passed out a few times (alcohol and 23 hours of no sleep), got teargased, and got jerry Only's autograph |

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 22/08/2008 00:44:57 Been there done that, went ahead and got used as a ramp for someone going up floating and my good pants got ruined by a rip above the left knee during a RATM concert. The next night I again get into the mix, new pair of good pants, gets stuck somehow and rips them in the exact same place at the RHCP gig.
I have a hard time finding good pants so that sorta influenced my decision to sit back and drink instead.

I never quite understood mosh pits...
If you jump around and run in circles like an idiot, some dude punches you in the head. If you drop into a fighting stance and kick some ass, they call the bouncers/cops. :(
What are you supposed to do in a mosh pit??? Are you supposed to act like your dancing while throwing "sucker" attacks that don't look like attacks or something???

I guess it depends on the band, some bands attracts amoebas and there anything goes. Other bands attract a more sensible crowd and there you typically only suckerpunch someone if he floats by booting you in the head or something equally unpleasant. I guess you can call it a slamdance optional.

Yeah, back in my college days we used to make fun of all the high school kids who would mosh to anyone, and I do mean ANYONE, I'm talking Natalie Merchant here.
Maybe it's just because I was 6' and about 240 back then, that I didn't see any point in knocking down helpless idiots without doing anything. I can see the rush it provides to many, but when you've got as much mass as I do, I spend more time not knocking down innocent bystanders than I do trying to do it to people who want to.

14 years or so ago though was a different story, RATM was always good for a bloody nose or two.
Best gig related injury though was watching a mate attempt a stage dive at Brixton Academy, anyone whoÆs been there would know there is a security fence between the crowd and stage. He didn't make it, got knocked clean out by this thing and was a dribbling wreck for the rest of the night.
edit, his graceful flight was a wonder to behold...well, up to a point

Hmm... when the hell did mosh-pits start to become places where you can punch/kick people ? I mean, wasn't it supposed to be just slamming into eachother in the most creative/acrobatic way possible given the circumstances, without intent to cause damage ? Oh well, I guess some might lose control and get agressive, but... meh...

Mid to late 90's saw the insurgence of the Hardcore sceen. The music had pretty solid meanig behind the words, but the idiots in the crowd wanted to prove they were men. These guys typical were straight-edgers that were trying to add a little bite to their neo-classical christian identity.
What ensued was a constant semi-dance off where people would jump in swing arms in large circles and kicking high into the air, for the sole purpose of clearing the pit. This style slowley has leaked into the metal mosh-pit. The mixing had violent results for a few years. But now a days those individuals that find themselves in a real pit and try those antics typically get ganked real quick by the veterns or bouncers. The hardcore seen has slowed down since for the most part the kids that drove that sceen have grown up and many have even left behind their straight edge beliefs becuase they are now having to pay for stuff instead of living like a hog off their parents.
Typically, kicks to the head come from crowd surfers. Punches to the face come from the typical fist raise that occurs in the skipping motion used in the pit or from someone falling and fist coming up or down to grab up the guy. Most contact to the head in real pits is still incidental.

all this = true good to see a fellow mosher that knows his shit
also: the hardcore dancing (were the swing their arms, do two step dancing and all that shit)it isn't "meant" to hurt other people, it's just a type of dance that seems aggresive, however as slade put it, mixing hardcore dancing with a trad. mosh will result in fists to the face etc.
and those poor hardcore dancers get ganked BIG TIME by fellow vets. I hardcore dance sometimes but thats when i know i won't get ganked, otherwise i love the trad. way of moshing, sore arms afterwards ftw ________________________ I'M POOR

I nod in agreement. I tried swinging my arms like that once, and really aggravated my left shoulder, that is the thrashed side. Never did it again. As for my kicking, I never wanted to endanger anyone
I can see how some kids with some frustration wanted to release it in "safer" way then in a traditional pit, but hat whole scene was just not my cup o tea and I did not take kindly to them molding into the metal sceen. That is when I started pulling back to the sides of the pit and went on protection duty and let, the big guys from above posts, regulate the flailers. (edit: Actually that is when I went to the bar and drank. I actually did not go near the pit as self control measure. I did not want to beat the tar out of those kids. I am not 6ft whatever 260+, but I am a solid 185 lbs and I new that is I left things rip on one of the kids I would not be doing the right thing. So I eliminated myself from the equation for a few years. end edit:) Theses guys ruined the pit for 4 years for me and I have grown into my self-appointed positin on the edge of the pit. The sceen has significantly smoothed over since the transition period seems to have ended. 3 years ago
Now hardcore music on the other hand, was some of the most powerfull speach I have heard to date.

kinda retired, getting too old for this. but most vivid memory of a moshpit was ca 10 years ago on Aggressor (Estonian death-metal) gig when I got smacked in the face with reinforced soldier boot buy a crowd-diving guy. got knocked out cold for a few minutes there :D also remember slipping on puddles of blood in front row. at that time people liked to cut themselves a lot, sometimes overdoing it haha
fun times :)

Wow that came from left field and I bite
I guess you are talking about the cutters mentioned above if not then ignore the rest of this post.
Although, I find the practice unsatisfing and a practice that causes public health issues when done at a concert, it is not a disqualifier of intelligence. Maybe a disqualifier to whether or not you want to be in a social situation with them. Ritual scarification has been a practice of many people throughout history. Once again, I do not automatically group these actions with ritualistic scarification, but I do not think that the actions are due to a lack of intelligence. Now, if one of them cut a jugular, ulnar, or radial artery then I might questions ones intelligence or state of sanity
I do think that they should leave the cutting for the times when they are at home and listening to the music at home. But that is not really the point of ritual scarification. It is just a more extreme version of us, that jump in the pit with the expectation of getting a little mashed up, cutters just prefer to do it to themselves. Cutters like the shows of devotion, moshers want to try and get a slight "taste" of what old style battle was like; that is the main difference, not a lack of intelligence.

I used to mosh a bunch in my early to mid teens whle i lived overseas in morocco. I remember Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie was out then and it was a frakkin amaazing album, and i used to headbang to that and a bunch of subpar songs from Metallica and Sepultura and so forth. It's a shame I missed out on a bunch of alternative pop and rock from the 90's, esp. a lot fo the the stuff coming out from Britain. And a bunch of early 90's hiphop from Third Bass, Big Daddy Kane, Mark B and Blade and so on. Why'd I listen to crap music? iTS not fair.

meeh, even intelligent people need to let off some steam now and then ;) I don't think that cutting is right, but I'm not judging it either. if they get something out of it, be my guest. at least hey're cutting themselves, you know.
anyways, haven't seen this behaviour for a while- must been a passing trend, at least on this corner of the ball
