"SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Intel on Thursday showed off a wireless electric power system that analysts say could revolutionize modern life by freeing devices from transformers and wall outlets."
No more power-bricks. Although the amount that can be transmitted is fairly limited at the moment, wireless recharging certainly is possible.

yeah but that's not magnetic and would kill anyone in the way.
also 2050? comeon were smarter than that, wireless power is going to be obsolete by 2050. they better figure it out quick :P

I love ETA's like that. Those who can remember it will either not be around or too old and senile to wonder why it was never developed. Those who are young enough to still be around don't have the capacity to remember for that length of time.
Reality is what is in front of you to use today. Pie in the sky is 40+ years into the future.

Thats a point, couldnt you transmit data as well? As in having a monitor powered by wireless and the connection to the computer too, meaning you could walk around with it cordless and still use it? ---------- Gotta be on the ball.. ball? what ball.. that ball.. which ball.. AHH BALL!! |

Very interesting but you guys know there is already things like this you can buy? There is a wireless mouse that receives it's power to charge via magnetic inductance from the mousemat as well as several other items using a similar principal.

Yeah, think that could happen? beam down energy wirelessly from orbital solar panels? that would be awesome.
i remember thinking about ways to make energy and wires was quite an obstacle.

Didn't some guy named Nicole Tesla think of/discover this 150 years ago or so? It might've slipped under the radar somehow. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

Actually, in slightly related news I glow under UV and I don't mean just like regular Caucasian skin does I mean BRIGHT. It's due to my Vitiligo. It's actually a rather awesome effect and I'll never forget the way the doctor looked at me when he asked me which treatment I'd like to start for it and I replied "Hah, none man, this is awesome". So yeah, I glow. (And yes.. there is a UV strip-light above my bed )

Well that's the whole point of this stuff, it shouldn't have any side-effects like that. It's a magnetic field, not an electric field. They're not actually sending the electricity to the devices. Magnetic Fields are mostly harmless.

ok, first, yes Tesla tesla tesla
second. dont start throwing away your extension cables yet. it will be a looooong time before this is a working application AND the loss of power in transmission using current methods would make it entirely too expensive to power most devices w/ any semblance of cost effectiveness
third, tesla theorized exactly how ppl are doing this now. but he never really made it work that way. if we used tesla's prototypes to wirelessly transmit power, everthing would have lightning bolts flying to it (he never made a magnetic tranmission system)
he did say given a big enough transmitter he could power anything on the planet remotely. he also said he made a super death ray. he irrationally displayed ocd symptoms regarding #s and while a total genius and ahead of his time, wasn't a perfect scientist nor was he a profit
i did one of my final EE projects on wireless power back in the day. and while wonders never cease, i will probably see a cure to cancer or aids before i see this product hit the shelves (in the realm of possibility, but not holding my breath)
edit: there are devices on the market that allow you to pick up the charge off placing your laptop (with proprietary battery cell) on a pad that sits on your desk, so intel isn't the first. to see them do this over any amount of range would be damn impressive "one more spam thread will get you a warning. - Thanks Hutch. " isn't a warning of a warning a warning? or just a warning of a warning? didnt he just get 'the warning'?

Mr. Tesla did indeed pioneer wireless power a long, long, LONG time ago, and wireless energy transfer isn't anything new by any means.
I've heard of these new transformers and while it is a big step forward they're still woefully inefficient - exact figures have never been released but it looks to be in the 30-40% range, OK for small stuff but you're not going to run any kind of appliance that draws more than 30 or 40 watts normally on that unless you want to pay a fortune in power bills. ---

I doubt it, while there wouldn't be the risks like you would have with a Maser-like power-feed down from the array, I'm quite sure the earth's magneto-sphere would thoroughly mess up the field, and the intensity would have to be very high too, making the field more likely to cause side-effects. (either in humans, other electronics or wildlife.)
