Problem: an afk cloaker sits in your system for days disrupting your carebearing ops.
Solution: design a destroyer class module that will send out a "ping" giving the general direction of the cloaker. You could also make this module use scripts that would lower the deviation of your scan, but would have less range (basically like probes)
By making this a destroyer class module only (like strip miners for exhumers) you would also be giving a breath of life to an undervalued ship class.

Brilliant idea, not only would it open up interesting strategic options for gameplay but it would also breath life into the now somewhat stale and forgotten destroyer shipclass.
It could even be plugged into the game quickly by using the already existing onboard scanner window without to much work by CCP. If the module is activated, the onboard scanner range would automatically be set to the "ping" modules maximum range and either the F11 overview would show which direction the cloaked ship is at "roughly" or one could use the "ping" module similar to a regular scanner to locate the cloaked ships direction/location. When the "ping" module would be activated the scanner would only display cloaked ship signals/radio waves or what not on the scanner results.
Thumbs up.

AFK / Cloak --- Don't take my ranting personally. I may just be arguing the topic, unless you're saying something stupid, and then I mean every word. "Players don't want Variety. They want THE BEST" |

I've still yet to hear a good reason why AFK cloaking is a problem in any way. All it boils down to really is the fact that people are far too reliant on the Local channel for their safety.

Solution: Get your stupid lazy and self involved carebears into organized gangs and on comms when mining and ratting. Get it into their heads that 0.0 or low sec is not empire and they may need to be organized and need to defend them selves. Show them that in a gang with good bonuses they will mine more and tank better while they are carebearing and so they will not only be more secure but also better off.
FIXED.

It's funny you should say that. Now I'm no carebear but isn't sitting afk in a system waiting for easy targets to drift by when it is to your leasure in a cloaked ship lazy?

There no such thing as a easy target if your in a organized corp/alliance as every target could or should be bait in a trap or at least be prepared.

Ahh well, I guess it's more of a guideline than a rule, eh?

AFK pirates will never see those targets to begin with as long as they are AFK. If they're paying attention, it's no different from active surveillance.

The AFK cloakers aren't waiting for targets. Instead they are just sitting in system because they know that their presence alone can scare their enemies into remaining docked.

They're invisible, can't activate modules, and are AFK. I don't see the problem here?

I agree tbh.
My question on all of this is: How exactly do you know they are afk? If you know* they are afk, why exactly is it a problem if they are away from the keyboard? If you know* they are afk cloaking 23/7 then.... erm.... how can they harm if of course they are cloaked 23/7?
Added something from another thread in there by accident.

This is a flat-out lie that is perpetuated by anti-cloak crusaders. The real reason we stay AFK is to at least attempt to use stealth tactics in a game where stealth is completely gimped by "Local." Since we can't truly hide our presence, our only choice is to make our presence so mundane that the targets get lulled into a false sense of security thinking we are AFK. This is the only way to make a surprise attack from stealth in this ENTIRE game. And this is what you are most afraid of. The science-fiction equivalent of a ninja coming out of the darkness and slitting your throat. Every game has a rogue/thief/assasin class for the small but dedicated community of people who enjoy that playstyle. We're here, too. We've always been here. And we will always be here. And the price you pay for exploiting Local is living in fear.

this..
Only real fix to the problem would be to kill local as a information channel.
If there's no local then fine, have your destroyers that say 'ping' and short range anti cloak probes or what ever. Atleast cloaker could attack once before the whole blob is falling on to its back.

My mistake. Either way I've never seen AFK cloaking as a problem that needed fixing.
