I can fly pretty much anything that isnt from Amarand can use just about everything t2 except lasers.
Any ideas on the cheapest possible ship that could successfully take down 0.0 rats?
If you think corp is different than a guild or clan you have some insecurity issues.

Edited by: Galan Undris on 25/08/2008 18:57:59 A battlecruiser is like what, 20 mill including insurance? That's pretty cheap and will do all regular 0.0 spawns in a decent setup. Guess it would be a Harbinger for amarr (I don't fly amarr)
You can go smaller, but cruisers lack survivablity for some of the tricky spawns. AFs can do them, but are very slow killers and cost just slighlty less than a BC after insurance.

I used to rat Gurista 1.7M spawns in a largely t1 fit vexor...

well almost any cruiser can handle any 0.0 rats as long as it keeps transversal, maybe frigs as well but ... its damn slow lol

The problem with "keeping transversal" is that Guristas shoot lots of missiles at you. Serpentis are easy by comparison. :)

Well fortunetly for me Guristas are the one pirate faction I wont be hunting. I would probably go for either Serpentis or Angels.

I'd probably use a Caracal, Vexor, or Arby then.

taranis, thrasher, ishkur, vexor....
unless you fight guristas you can use allmost any ship :) but you want one that does right damage type for the npc's you are killing and a ship that dont use a ton of ammo. --------

Well mostly I think I want the cruiser than can kill big npc battleships the quickest(and survive.)

yeah but taranis, thrasher and ishkur all put out enough damage to take down a npc bs fast with good skills... and they take less damage from npc's because of smaller sig radius if you keep moving so they cant track..
ranis and thrasher can both do over 300 dps :) --------

Erm, I was under the impression that the Thrasher had too much sig radius and not enough tank to make this work... ?

I do it after 2 days of play time. Beats missioning. Best use for the ship; huge profit margin and is expendable if you get ganked.
I recommend any new minny player gets into a thrasher and goes 0.0 ratting, very fun and profitable.

Do you want the cheapest ship + cheapest usage? (as in no ammo, use drones and a cheapest ship possible?)
Taranis works nicely and you have enough speed to get out if things start becoming too much pvp (nothing beats a ceptor when you decide to run, unless you have a cloak). Or you can just face the enemy and blast them out from the sky (works too). Ishkur is also quite nice. You can use drones and it still has enough speed to avoid certain situations (you don't get that "WWARP YOU BASTARD WARP!!!" moment when you see a red roam :) Of course there is ONE PROBLEM...cargo space...

I used to rat in 0.0 in an Ishkur or an Enyo... cheap, decent DPS withdrones and blasters... and fast enough to get out when needed. Removed. Please keep your EVE signature related to your EVE persona and not that of a real life politician. Navigator |

Ishkur fitted with:
3 neutron blaster I
1 AB/MWD 1/2 - stuff
2 magnetic field stabilizers
Mwuhahaha, Yes I have ratted in this setup, damned good fun, really tough to take on the T2 cruiser spawns and destroyer spawns.

Vagabond is great for ratting angels, just use the standard PVP fit set orbit on the BS go afk . I could kill 3x of every bs spawn in my vaga.

Cap Recharger II x 4
Cruise Launcher X 4 800mm AC x 3 Tractor

back when my skills wasnt that high i used to rat sanshas with a punisher...problem with my low skills was that it took 20-40 min for each battleship!
it was mostly for fun though^^

I can kill any bs less than 1m bounty(maybe more but havent tried) with a t2 equipped t1 frig, tristan, incursus, rifter, thrasher, it is slow though and more something i do for laughs since its quite funny to take out a mega with a tristan.
For isk/hour with minimum risk i dont think you can beat a vexor, using just t1, since a full flight of t2 drones costs more than the ship + insurance.

I rat Blood Raiders for sec in a passive shield tanked Wolf, ISK is not good. Used to rat angels in a Vexor, dps was more than ok but tank wasn't.
Pure turrets rat that don't neut (that must leave only serps) will die to anything able to lay 200dps and that is small and fast enough to evade their fire. You can take Blood too if you avoid the neuting spawns, or can do damage and tank without cap (hence the passive wolf). Rats firing missiles require some modi****of tank or a very small size.
Another cheap possibility is heavy missile spamming at 100+km with a sensor booste Caracal, works on about all kind of rats.
One problem when ratting in a small ship is that chaining may not be possible as the small rats are more of a danger to you than the big one. -- I'm done whining about AFs, it looks like they are making them right \o/ |

Well, I did some ninja ratting with two Rifters (works) and a Wolf (doesn't work that well). I did have worse skills at the time so it might've had a impact, but battleships took bloody forever to kill in a AF.

You could probably take down most 0.0 rats in a T1 frig if you really really wanted to. For practicality though, a cruiser is probably as cheap/small as you want to go.
I'm sure many cruisers could work, but a vexor or caracal would probably be a good starting point.
Most people I know that rat use a BC, hac, or BS. A HAC is probably the best, but it's also the most risk of course. Personally, I ratted once, but hated it even more than missions, so no more of that for me.
