So that raven haveing 600 crew folk is probably a pod ship where as a scoprion was mentioned to have 10k crew however oddly that ship was pod piloted as well. So these numbers could be simply the bare minium required or maxium required on the sitation >< which makes things further confusing.
But all i know is that pod pilot frigates only need a crew of 4-6
Descending even further into RP-land, I like to think that the size of the crew also depends on the wealth and skill of the pod pilot. Some capsuleers can afford to equip their ships with the expensive equipment that reduces the crew required to run the ship. Others are not to fortunate and have to rely on manual labour to get the job done. Then there is also the age of the ship to take into account...someday I would love to see ships' attributes shift according to how old they are and how much damage they have taken over the years. The older the ship, the more experienced crew you would need to keep it together.
...of course, this means that my very first Caracal is now probably held together by nothing more than daisy-chains of crew members stretched from wall to wall holding on to whatever they can find.
but... how does an old minmatar ship hold together then? THAT is our wa with NEW ships

My take on this is that there's pretty much zero reason why anyone - the capsuleer, the crew or the people designing the ships - would want the capsuleer to ever have any kind of contact with their crew. Apart from anything else, it's dangerous for the capsuleer - both through physical risk and through being hampered by even the faintest of emotional ties to the non-immortals onboard. I'd imagine that the capsuleer price for a ship covers costs for a personnel officer and enough spare cash to pay for wages for everyone, along with fuel and consumables and all the other stuff that you never have to worry about (that or CONCORD pays all these costs for capsuleers out of its tax revenues to keep everything simple).

Aww youre going to through something really fun and cool under the bus just because you can invent an RP reason not to do it? It's an awsomely fun idea. You WANT people attached to their crew, it will make the game way better to give people a greater attraction to individual ships.
More importantly than all that, it opens up the door for boarding parties and hostile, which I know everyone wants to see. |
