After much excitement of training marketing to level II, I thought I was going to save my self time by not having to travel to Station X to actually have to sell the good. Well after actually attempting this, then looking at the forums, it seems I have it all wrong.
The goods that I want to sell already have to be at Station X or I still have to transport them. Marketing simply means if I am lucky enough or someone how can predict a location where goods will sell in the future, I can sell them without being there, but the goods still have to be there.
Seems to me the description sucks. Yes looking back at it, it does do what it says it will do, but I don't really see the application of this skill. Maybe if I could predict the market and knew a spot that was going buy high later, then it would be beneficial, but otherwise not really.
I know traders don't give their tade secrets away, but maybe a veteran trader can nudge me in the right direction.

I use this skill all the time. I transport a huge load of product to a market hub and list some orders, but not full stacks. Then while I'm doing whatever in region for the next week I can check the market from anywhere and add sell orders to either undercut someone or because my initial order sold out. (why not just list the entire stack in one order? that's another discussion)
Sometimes when I am in a hurry I drop off huge loads of product in a hub then later on when I have free time, but am not in station, I can list the orders I want.
You are right, the description is misleading-- I thought exactly what you thought when I first trained the skill.

It's mostly good for peeps who buy lots of stuff then resell it. Corp buy orders go in a delivery hanger at the station. When a qty of sufficient size is hit and it is profitable I dump'em on the market. I echo the previous poster as well, sometimes you don't sell the whole stack at once. Without giving away the shop it has to do with turning over your inventory in a timely fashion and capitalizing on sale oppourtunities in other locales.
I do with though we had some star trek replicator transporter technology, would be so handy to beam a stack of stuff a few jumps away... But then how would people gank haulers? ;-p |

I imagine the Marketing skill is good if you do a lot of Region-wide Buy Orders.

Ever heard of this nasty place called Jita?
Ever wondered how the expert traders there were able to do anything in that horrible lag?
Their trick is "DO NOT GO TO JITA!" Go anywhere else in The Forge region instead.
- Place a buy order in Jita using Procurement
- Place a sell order in Jita using Marketing
- Update those orders using Daytrading
- ???
- Profit! |

I have also been thinking around have to use the skill, and here is an idea I have not tried yet:
I used one of my alts to put a lot of regional buy orders, and then travel around to pick up the goods. Normally I did not pick all up in every go, only visited the stations where I got lots of goods.
If you have lets say 30% margin from your buy to the sell price in the trading hub, you still make a good profit even if you leave 15% of all goods in smaller stations with smaller quantities.
The beauty of marketing? If you are competing with another regional buyer in 0.01 incremental steps, you can remote sell all the small quantities and only keep the big piles. This way you dont need to lock up cash in goods, while still having access to regional orders. It is only an idea, not sure how well it works.
