No no, not at all - we'd been looking for them since we'd got up. Hence the lack of clothing.

Sorry for the loss The TX, I know exactly how you feel. There's people like jason hill, acting all high and mighty, who literally don't give a shit about any other living creatures on the planet. It's a real shame. This forum is also exactly the right place for a thread like this, so jason, please shut up. In terms of animals, I'm in a similar situation as you are. My girlfriend and I live together with 4 geckos, 2 gerbils, and a cat. Recently two of the gerbils died of cancer and respiratory infection, it was horrible. Time heals the wounds, all you can really do is your best to take care of the animals.

My hamster used to get out of his cage few times, bugger did cliffhanger stuff to get out.. realy cool watching him brake out
When that happened I just waited, little bugger usually showed up running around me looking for food. Maybe few hours later or even days.

Hamsters are rights basterds when it comes to escaping. Mine used to be able to go right round the top of his cage spiderman style. I just don't get how they do it. Never figured out how to open the door though .
Just lay some of those tunnel style traps though and make sure every route to the outside world is sealed off. If their still in the house they'll turn up. If not then good luck.

Edited by: shaqarava on 01/09/2008 00:58:08 My advise is to give up actively searching. I have leopard geckos and one will escape now and again. Looking for them doesn't work, they seem to appear out of nowhere again in a day or two so best thing to do is to go on with your daily routine and just keep an eye out. Bad thing about waiting is that the longer you wait the more likely they'll have defecated and I don't like knowing there's uncleaned gecko poo in the house that I'll never be able to clean up.
But good luck to you, I had gerbals once, one day my dad suspected that our kitchen was infested with rats so he bought some rat poison and put some bowls of it around the house. Then one day one of the gerbals gets out for the very first time and eats the poison. Found it later and put it back in the tank not knowing it ate the poison. It died the next day which I also found out the 2nd gerbal which didn't escape was ill. Apparently the escaped gerbal had some of the poison in its mouth pouch that the other gerbal most likely got the poison from. It died later on. My dad never did get any rats in the end.

I am now 99.9999999% sure that they escaped into the wall cavity - and there's no way they can get out of there, cuz theres at least a small drop, but it probably drops straight to the ground floor - I don't think our cavities are insulated.
Possible scenarios therefore:
1) They died from the fall. 2) They were injured in the fall and died in the first 24hrs or so of being down there 3) They survived the fall, but without food or water, added with the dust and dirt and other crap down there, they've died over the last 48hrs or so. 4) They survived the fall, and somehow, they're surviving down there, but for how long, who knows.
If there's only a slight drop and they've landed on insulation, or a layer of that plastic stuff that captures moisture and forces it to the outer skin of the wall, then I may be able to drop some thick string or rope down for them to try to climb (if they're alive). If it's a big drop, then their fate is sealed, and there is nothing we can do. |

I'm really sorry to hear about this man, it's devastating when you lose a pet because really they are a member of your family. Those of you complaining about his work and telling him to grow up? Enjoy running the rat-race and discarding everything that is ACTUALLY important in the pursuit of cash. A job is a job and more can be found, a life once snuffed out is gone forever and YOU may not measure the life of his hamsters as much but he certainly does. Money really isn't everything.

I once had my hamster escape, and we took the whole house apart looking for it, we gave up :(.
About 1/2 year later my parents where replacing the floor and we found him, still alive and the size of a rugby ball turns out he had been living off spiders and stuff. |

Hey TX, I hope you're still leaving out some humane traps in case they didn't fall into that wall cavity.
When I was a kid, my dad let all my gerbils loose in a drunken rage (thanks dad!); I found half of them immediately (some even got outside). But we had one lone gerbil running around the house like a rodent for a few weeks scavenging what he could. They're wild animals, and they're pretty good at surviving on their own. I'm willing to bet they're still alive.
And if they did fall down that hole, hamster bodies are incredibly resilient, their actual bones are malleable. So I HIGHLY doubt they would have died or been hurt from a fall like that.
And everything Benco said above - that was perfect :) Life, in any form, is the most important thing in the world. Jobs come and go, but your family (animals included) is the reason you do it all. And it's all that really matters. |

Hey, what's with all the grief people are giving to TX? OOP is normally a friendly place, and you don't have to post in every thread if you don't like it.
Mr. TX, can you get a couple of new hamsters in the same sorts of colours? Dumb question, but do they have little personalities so your GF could tell?
When my brother's dog died his GF was totally distraught, and didn't ever think he could be replaced, but they took everyone's advice and got another one really quickly and I think that patched things over much better. |

Aye, yeah the new dog is a totally different breed, he didn't buy it and hope she didn't notice. My post was a bit crossed purposes really. I just meant to say it's a good plan to just run on right through and get another couple sharpish. In retrospect it's probably best to be upfront about it rather than buy some new ones and pretend they are the old ones. |

i'm sorry some people are giving u some rubbish responces in this thread, every life is a life is my moto :)
i had a hampster that escaped, it escaped when we were having work done so many doors outside were open so assumed the worst when she did not turn up.
however a week later me and my girly were sitting watching tv when the damned hampster climed up the single seater, walked across my arm (making me jump!) then just walked onto my legs, stopped and started to have a wash! seemed she had had enough of her holiday trip and wanted to come home lol, we never found out where she went, but she lived a good while back in her cage :)
i hope u at least find what happens and hope its a good answer, ill be watching the thread so please keep updating with things uv tried etc :) |

**** you. You sir, are an arse. And by the posts in this thread that support me and my hamsters, I'm sure there's people here who would agree. You immediately placed a monetary value on a hamster. I don't care if I was PAID to take on my hamsters or whether I paid ú100 a piece. Their cost has nothing to do with it. A hamster is not nothing. A hamster is a hamster. Like a parent is a parent or a sibling is a sibling, my hamsters are hamsters and they are part of my family. Nobody forced you to post in this thread - if you don't like it **** OFF THEN! It really is that simple. I posted to obtain advice and moral support, and that is what I recieved, mostly, and most of us here are reasonably happy.

Rofl at the moron .....
you need 'moral' advice over a hamster do you? What particular 'moral' are you looking for? Thou shall not kill, thou shall not covet? What about Thou shall get a life because you think a hamster is part of the family? Does it get a place at the dinner table, napkins et al? (Lol at the idea of TX and his missus putting out little hamster size knives and forks) What about pocket money? Does it contribute to the household bills? What place in the family does it hold? It has the brain the size of a flea, like its owner really ... True, no-body forced me post in this thread, but there again, no one forced you to post such an inane thread in the first place. Want to post stupid and insipid threads? Then expect replies that dont go with your thoughts or feelings. Tough. Not everyone thinks you are wise or clever or even with a brain. All you do TX is post sh1te threads on the forums looking for some form of self gratification, a sort of "look at me ... please" (eg: your really realy pathetic videos etc .. please, what a tit you are) You are an 'arse' of the highest order.
PS: I did offer advice ... go to work, leave some food, get blanket. Stop being such a tw@t. If I had your dull brain I could half imagine your little hamster with its coat, scarf and hat on, little suitcase in hand thinking .. "get me away from this, he even tried to toilet train me!!"
