Quote: The upgrade of the hardware in London has taken longer than anticipated. Color me impressed. Very good move.

yes i have to say i was very pleasantly surprised about that one - actually eve is starting up in 200 seconds - so its 2hrs early - but i have a feeling it might just die a few times.

"appreciated and congrats on getting all works done :) plenty of moaners, but hey once they got thier own massive online games going with 100% uptime then they got the right to comment. well played CCP"
That lame argument doesn't cut it.The "whiners" don't claim to be able to run a MMORPG, whereas CCp do, so they should deliver, and due to the extended downtimes, I fear they are not.
I appreciate being given an extra day, but NOT giving us an extra day would have resulted in a public outcry, so they really had to do it.
And it's funny how all the downtimes take hours longer, because they realise they aren't skilled enough to upgrade and repair servers, so they have to call in IBM Techs, which costs them more time and money, when they could just employ staff that actually know what they are doing "Hobbes, she stepped into the Perimter Of Wisdom.Run!" |

I believe employing experts is something planned, and not some sort of emergency solution when things go fubar. I recalled Ovuer mentioning that in a blog about the hardware upgrades, and found it in this one.
"As an example, our first phase of the upgrades involved 11 people including the IBM experts. The second phase will include more since they are larger scale ops and of course ensuring the shortest downtime possible without compromising the upgrade process is key."

lol how much do you think it would cost them to hire IBM techs to work with them full time? Why the hell would they? Why would you hire people who specialize in installing the equipment they needed installed full time if you're going to do a one time hardware upgrade? They call in the techs because they need a job done that will only have to be done once, installing and setting up the servers. The staff they employ full time can maintain the servers, and they could probably install them too if they had a few days to do it.
Stop acting like you know what you're talking about.

Too many people ***** about CCP's management of server maintenance....
Ask yourself this, have you ever before played an onliner that has over 10k people on ONE server, then ask yourself if you've ever stuck with an onliner that has worse problems than EVE
The answer to the first one IS no And if the answer to the second is no you aint been playing for long enough to have a real idea about onliners... --------------------------------------------------------------

Deliver on what exactly, the ESTIMATED time of 16:00 GMT or the ESTIMATED time of 20:00 GMT. Last time I looked in a dictionary ESTIMATED was not another word for promised. FFS I get this all the time at work. I'll give someone an estimated time when something will be finished but they hear promised. Frankly I think CCP could state that it is an estimated time in big flashy letters and people would still expect it done exactly at that time.
P.S. If they got the servers from IBM they would have a service contract which most likely includes deployment of new equipment.

The one free day of EVE is no compensation for the mental trauma I have gone through this evening. I have sat in this chair, shaking, and all they can do is give us a free day?!
The server upgrades, however.... THEY will more than make up for it. :D NICE GOING CCP, YOU ROCK! --------

But yeah, the extra day was a really nice gesture, if nothing else it shows the fact that CCP really does care. I can think of several other online games that have gone down for way longer than a day and the devs basically said to live with it. _________________ [SAK] And Proud Of It! aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base? |

Of course there are games, I'm not so sure about what he means with "other" though. EVE isn't a game, it's reality..

The DT was forwarned and they had the decency to say it would probably take longer than they had put as an estimated finsih time so i slapped a nice long training on as i imagine everyone did who reads the news, i've got a free day and now the service works a lot lot better which is compensation enough for the lost day. Some people will never be happy.
Good Effort CCP

They did NOT have to give us an extra day, this is the first time ive seen this on any mmorpg. SWG had about 6 hours daily downtime when i played, DAILY downtime, no one got an extra day for that.
So stop trying to make it into something small when it is genorosity of gargantuan proportions. If you had read the terms of agreement when you signed up you would have seen they dont have to give us anything, public outcry or not.
