I know Caldari are Shield Tankers - (they usually) have X2 shields capacity than most other ships (especially BS)
But as for Galante ? why are they considered Armor Tankers ? The Armor on some Caldari is even better than Galante ..
My question (or a couple of) Can you SH Tank Galante? Can you AR Tank Caldari ?
Can you do both on a single ship (using appropriate skils)
Is using such method a reasonable technuique ?
Thx |

Gallente are considered armor tanks because the ships feature more low slots than mid slots: shield tanking happens in mid slots while armor tanking happens in low slots.
It is possible to shield tank some Gallente ships effectively, this though only applies to very specialized setups that can be used in PvP and for 0.0 ratting (to some degree). A shield-tanked Gallente ship is usually tanked passively while using low slots for speed (nano setup). I wouldn't ever armor-tank a Caldari ship, can't really think of any situation where this might be useful (even not for Caldari Recon Cruisers such as the Falcon or Rook).
You can theoretically tank shield and armor on a single ship, it is however not the best idea since you loose a lot of slots that can be used way more effectively. It's better to use mid slots for capacitor/electronic warfare and lows for tank/damage on armor tanks. Mids for tanking/electronic warfare and lows for damage/capacitor on shield tanks.
As already hinted at, there might exist exception where it makes sense to armor-tank a Caldari ship, I just can't think of any right now :) |

Their ships generally have more lowslots than midslots, and several have a bonus to active armour tanking.
Quote: Can you SH Tank Galante?
Somewhat. A passive shield-tanked Myrmidon can actually have a stronger tank than a passive shield-tanked Drake, though only in the extreme case where you can't fit anything in the mids or lows except shield tank, and then it has to be projectiles in the highs because of practically no cap recharge. You can also have a kind-of reasonable shield buffer tank on a Domi for PvP, but then you don't really have anything to use your lows on anyway...
Quote: Can you AR Tank Caldari ?
Generally no. You can just about armour tank a Raven (which can be useful in a RR gang) but then you're foregoing damage mods in exchange for freeing up a low of midslots for EW. This might be worth it depending on how much your gang needs the EW, though your damage will be dreadful. For this reason it's not worth it at all for missions - you could fit a Raven with a LAR II and four active hardeners and have no problems tanking, but you will run missions slower than a sensibly-setup Drake (as well as tank less).
Quote: Can you do both on a single ship (using appropriate skils)
Absolutely not. Well... you could in theory, but you'd have a very hard time justifying it. For missions, you can easily tank the incoming damage with either single tanking 'layer'. And if you can't, then having both tanks won't help you as the damage will still get through both (and once your shield tank fails you're unlikely to have any cap to run your active armour tank anyway). For PvP, you absolutely need your slots for useful modules, and fitting two tanks will make you like the classic mission Drake - a brick with mediocre damage and very little impact on the battle.
Quote: Is using such method a reasonable technuique ?
No to all of your questions, for the reasons above. Well, the passive shield-tanked Myrm is an exception if you're running missions, but otherwise shield tanks on Gallente ships will be sub-optimal, and likewise with armour-tanked Caldari ships. And fitting a dual tank is almost never appropriate as once you have one tank in place, you could do something more beneficial with your remaining slots. |

shield tanking is far inferior to armor tanking in a pvp enviroment due to the lack of takle it brings. but for missions some gallente ships can have impressive passive shield tanks mrym and ishtar being two |

It depends on the size of a gang, where the gang is and which other ships are in it, but often enough extra tackle gear wont be needed on a battleship, then a shield tanked BS does fine. |

The following mods are considered almost mandatory for PVP. Certainly, you'd need 2 or 3 of them.
- Warp scram/disruptor - MWD - Web - Cap booster
Guess which slot they all go in? |

Gallente ships also have more armor than shield. Likewise Caldari ships have more shield than armor. |

i agree theres little point ever armour tanking caldari ships but i have used sheild tanks on amarr bc`s for ratting angels in 0.0.
this works just fine
prophecy
6 x 425mm ac`s 1 x haml
2 x large sheild extenders 1 x 10mn mwd
2 or 3 gyrostabs 3 or 4 sheild power relays or power diags or a mix
harbi
7 x 425mm ac`s 1 x salvager/cloak
2 or 3 large sheild extenders 0 or 1 web 1 x 10mn mwd
3 x gyrostabs 3 sheild power relays
yeah i know, i like ac`s |

In general:
Shields: Caldari > Minmatar > Gallente > Amarr
Armour: Amarr > Gallente > Minmatar > Caldari
Speed: Minmatar > Amarr > Gallente > Caldari
And this is why traditional tank/gank caldari ships generally suck at pvp lol |
