Hey, teaching kids self defense and tactics that will work in the real world. More practical then teaching wrestling. But, if the teachers and parents are overzealous things can go wrong as with just about anything.
MMA is actually less violent to the brain then boxing is and the joint injury rates will be similar to those of normal high contact sports.
I believe in Thailand, that kids fight while adult males bet.
EDIT: Head gear would probably be a good idea with adolescents.

I've always liked it. There was a little guy I was hanging out with for a while (mainly cause I wanted to get in his mothers pants) and Karate really boosted his self esteem. He got really good with nunchucks.
However it does need certain limitations that can be opened up at later ages, like a step by step program.

I think it's good tbh, it's a very disciplined sport. Of course you will probably have the occasional chav who thinks he's hard cause of it and use it offensively but hey.

It could easily go bad. Raising children is a precious balance of training them to face the world, while instilling your morals.
Sometimes, it goes haywire. Like religious fanatics who train their children to believe that anyone who doesn't believe as they do are heathens and don't deserve to live. Or psychotic militant fanatics who train their children to believe that taking a life means nothing, and that doing so is perfectly alright.
But in general, I would prefer a child who is able to defend themselves, than a child who is raised to be a victim.
