Typically I would post this in the out of pod area but I feel that this has potental for the EvE community. Today, rather conviently, Xfire updated their service and with it came a new "toy", broadcasting.
FAQ
Whats cool about this is that its a live stream from the players perspective to a webpage, setup to be either public or friends only (this can even go further).
Playing around with it revealed that the broadcaster can hook up their mic and provide commentary on the situation. A chat window automatticlly launches for those viewing the broadcast can comment on what they see.
Now, what I immediately thought about was that this tool, which is completely free and already bundled with a bunch of options again for free was that for players who host events such as races, tournaments and what not can now stream what is happening to an audiance that might not be able to log on to watch whats going on in person.
The stream lags behind by about 5 seconds but doesnt seem to have any frame rate drops, and I didnt notice any lag while playing (though I suspect lag may become an issue if alot of individuals are watching).
The only major drawback is that, even set under best quality, the graphics are fairly distorted, likely due to compression and I didnt see an option to save what has already been seen, however considering its still Alpha in design I imagine image quality will improve.
Anyway just thought those in the eve community who would find this interesting would like to know. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

Never used xfire but if that ends up working well then it'll be fuggin cool. It's a product a lot of competitive gamers have been screaming for for years now.

Why people use shit tracking programs like xfire has always confounded me. Adding bells and whistles to shit still doesn't hide the fact it's shit. ---

xfire has always been more about being able to see what games your friends are playing. yeah, they've gone a bit crazy with the features, would much prefer it if they had just refined and kept it simple.

willingly sending information to someone is not the same as someone taking information from your computer

Considering Spybot, Adware and my antivirus programs all ignore Xfire (which I have running while they run as well) I cant help but think your just being paranoid. Hell you have more to worry about CCP having access to your customer info such as your real name, location CC number and so forth than Xfire knowing what games you play.
ANYWAY, not trying to start a "Xfire is spyware" thread here, just posting that a new tool provided by Xfire was released today to those who may find a use for it. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

just for the record, Xfire works similarly like spyware that it gathers data about your play habits and transmits it to their server.
Such data in the wrong hands (EA?) can be dangerous.
This is why less-known anti-spyware scanners often mark Xfire as "unneeded" software.
Then again, the most I have in terms of personal communication is email and IRC. -

Edited by: Cygnus Zhada on 03/09/2008 02:32:06 Kazuma gets it, Xfire and other programs (remember that hippo one from way back) gather info on your computer behaviour. You undoubtably also gave them personal info and all that.
Running a program like Xfire costs money, to make it, to run the database and the data transfer. Do you really think they do that for free somehow?
It's spyware.

What exactly do you consider shit about xfire? It works excellently as a way to keep in contact with friends, see what games they are playing, and join them in said games with 1 click. Joining a friend in Cod4 for instance without xfire would require all kinds faffing about with copying and pasting in irc and/or vent, with xfire simply click join game.
Its a great program, all the bells and whistles i barely ever use dont intrude on that. It even records in game footage better than fraps and will host and upload for you automatically, how do you think that is shit?
