I don't know if this is a bug or intended but 2 of my drones decided to be abandoned while i was recalling them in a mission. The 2 that had aggro from a small group became abandoned when they reached my ship, while the other 3 entered my drone bay. I was able to scoop one, but the other popped before i was able to get to it.
These were only T2 Infiltrators, so I didn't really lose much, but if they were T2 Hammerheads i'd be a bit more annoyed by this.
This issue has never happened to me before. It may be a fluke, but hopefully its not a regression in the new patch. I know drones can be strangely unreliable sometimes, with respect to aggressive and focus fire, but i've never had one just abandon for no reason.

I've had this happen to me as well (more than once) while playing on a craptastic connection... filled out a bug report but CCP said they couldn't replicate it.
This should be in the known issues and workaround forum though - and you should fill out a bug report :P. Maybe you'll have better luck than I did. ---

Happens all the time, has been happening all the time... Same as warrior II's not wanting to dock when you recall them leaving 1 or 2 out in space and having to do a recall, redock again..
It's not a bug, it's a feature... Err... yeah CCP, you comments in one of my bugreports is true: the drone programming is too stupid...

I don't know whether this is a related bug but If I deploy warrior 2 on my nano Ishtar at least one of them wont return if the ship is not moving. The only way I can get the last drone to dock is to burn at top speed then the drone returns.
I think it must be connected with the speed of the drones as the Ishtar has a drone navigation computer as well

It's speed related. They won't turn off their microwarps so they just orbit unable to get in range to dock. I usually have to web mine to get it to dock, as soon as the web hits, it's docked.
I've also had related problem where it would orbit too long and then just become abandoned.

Since the patch, I have seen drones wander off and start shooting at whatever takes their fancy even though I told them all to go for a single target. So far, I have lost two because of this and lost my ship because one or two of my drones went off and shot at a group that were idle after I'd told them to shoot at one that was orbiting me so they aggroed every NPC in the whole mission. The resulting lag from all the missiles and explosions stopped me warping out quickly enough. I was aligned and up to speed and not scrammed so it should have been an instawarp, instead it took 15 seconds with the words "Warp drive Active" on the screen to do absolutely nothing.
No point in petitioning, I'd just get the standard response... "our logs show nothing".

Small ship and very fast drones+Drone speed link=Issue I guess.

This never happened to me, until I fitted 3x Navigation Computers to my Celestis and the Hobgoblin IIs started doing 7km/s.
When I returned them to the drone bay, they would not dock as they were going to fast. Now I just order them to return and orbit, when they are orbiting, I then order them to return to drone bay, this then works ok!

Are you sure it wasn't because they hit that 50% hull barrier that makes them lose control?
There is a deactivation point, I think its 50%, could be lower though.

I've had some almost dead drones before and I've never had that happen.

Ya I've had my drones get incapacitated plenty of times but I've never had them just lose control.
