I know looking for a half decent answer on these forums is harder than trying to squeeze orange juice out of a cactus while pondering majority of the topics, but can stealth bomers be good in pvp?
When I refer to pvp, I mean 1v1 typed pvp with me firing from a crapload far away distance.
I ask since I got podded while trying good ole t1 rifter pirating in low sec by a cloaked stealth bomber from 168km away which I personally thought was pretty cool.
Opinions?

From that range his missiles take about 11 years to get to you... if you're still there when they arrive then you're not overly smart

Edited by: Farrqua on 04/09/2008 21:55:52 Well first off most of your targets will warp out before the first missile hits.
Unless he is passed out drooling on his key board. I mean you can do some decent alpha I guess...but if you are going to spend the skill to get in a SB, I would think getting into a a t1 cruiser would be a better route.
Better tanks, more damage, able to lock down your targets, use of drones for ewar or damage and so on and so on.
And a hell of a lot cheaper than a SB. Not to mention insurable.

Yes and no. Yes, they can be useful in PvP, but not in the scenario you describe (unless your target is asleep).
Basically, the problem is tackle. A bomber cannot tackle from 168km at all, and if it tries to tackle from short range, most decent frigates will eat it. That having been said, surprise is a factor, as you can see from your personal experience. If you had been aware of what was going on, you could have simply warped away in the twenty seconds it took for the missiles to arrive. Or, if your ship was fast enough, simply accelerated to a speed at which the missiles would have done no damage.
If, on the other hand, the stealth bomber was working with an interceptor to scram/web you, you would have had no chance at all, really. But then, a single T1 frig against two T2 frigs is fairly uneven odds.

Sitting 200kms away, you uncloak, use a passive targeter, Fire (hope you have MAXED missile skills so they move really fast!), you target warps out...
Sitting 20kms away, you uncloak, target, 1st salvo hits for good alpha, 2nd Salvo hits, target is now on top of you and since they locked back you can't cloak, 3rd salvo hits target, POP YOU ARE DEAD AND TARGET IS ALIVE STILL.
Sitting 40 kms away, you uncloak, target, 1st salvo hits, 2nd salvo hits, 3rd salvo hits, target is on top of you now, 4th salvo hits, target isn't going to win, Target warps out casue you have no scram.
In a fleet SBs are great. Ever seen what 10 Manticores with bomb launchers can do to a fleet? NEITHER HAS ANYONE ELSE, due to the stuipd cost of bombs. ------------------------------------- The difference between a Pirate and an Anti-Pirate is that an Anti-Pirate fights ships fitted with guns!

1 stealth bomber isn't much good at anything except nuisance ops. 3-4 stealth bombers + tackler & maybe EW can do real harm

So at least that's something you can do with them. :) ___________________________________

Soloing in a SB would require you to be close enough so that missiles can actually hit your target (frigs and destroyers) before they warp off. The goal is to pop them instantly.
In a small gang, the SB is very useful as you can target damped the enemy and do some massive damage from long range in support of the rest of the gang. ----

The Manticore happens to be my favourite ships.
But as has been mentioned above it'n not a great solo pvp ship (if you want to win under realistic circumstances).
Going solo about the only fight you can seriosuly hope to win is vs T1 frigs as the high damae from first volley can insta-pop such a ship. And tks to that deadly alpha-strike you can unlcoak close and your missiles might actually get to target before it warps away.
But how many pvpers fly T1 frigs? :-)
The actual bombing is so expensive and risky that it's simply not cost effective. For the amount of money you pay for SB, cloak and some bombs you can fit a more consistently effective ship.
If you want to pvp with SB you need a gang of them. Either enough so you can uncloak and alpha-strike your target to death - or you need an extra tackler to keep target in place (both to keep it from warping and from closing distance).
SB is a half-Raven when it comes to damage (and better at hurting small targets than a Raven) - and a paper death trap when it comes to tanking (<- there is no tanking for an SB - distance, speed and cloak are your only defense ).
Still - to me - it's the most fun ship in EVE.
YMMV :-) |

Stealth bombers can kill small flimsy things solo if you sneak up close to them. Perhaps about 10km range. If it's another stealth bomber make sure you have sensor boosters with scan resolution scripts loaded because, although I'm not sure, I suspect one volley of the correct damage missiles in sequence could pop either bomber.
In groups though, long range is the way to go with someone else tackling. __________

I have killed several bombers in my Rifter, most by landing right on top of them and killing them before they got the deciding volley off.
They look good in theory but in actual practise they're not that great, ofcourse the old "if we have 5 then we can kill a lot!!" yeah, but if you had 5 thoraxes instead you'd kill more.
They still don't have a proper role I don't think, they're too inflexible to actually work in practise.

Long range with something like an inty tackling they are amazing.
Or if they are in a bubble.
Certainly not for solo pvp... altho get 10 of them in a gang, and omg, you can cause some pain

lol
yes stealth bombers can be extremely useful
me being a veteran of the FW i do have a semi embaressing sotry to tell:
were roaming around in a small cruiser fleet, about 6 of us i believe, and our scout jumps through and there is a drake solo sitting on the gate, so of course, we jump in an easy kill right? lol hell no, we jump in and this drake has a strong active tank on it, WITH a MWD and webifier, thats an awkward setup obviously, but i guess we just think its a noob in a BC, easy kill (because drakes = missiles = long range)
anyway, after about a minute or so, his tank is almost broke, he had about idk aroudn 20% ish shield left, so we think cool, easy kill, but apparently no one noticed that local had risen by 4 (or 6, im not sure) and it was a squadron of stealth bombers, and it warped in, and wtf?pwned all of us one by one salvo by salvo until 4 of us died, and a destroyer that had joined us
we didnt even know they were there, which is weird because i though you cant warp while cloaked (or maybe they were uncloaked and we just didnt notice them, im not sure) but anyway, the point is, yes stealth bombers can be a strong asset, think of them as submarine warfare kind of, stealthy, deadly , and fragile, just like submarines

Given that they are only useful in a particularly tiny niche, if the training and ship cost is an issue, then they aren't worth it. Definitely don't train for one until after you can fly other T2 ships.

For those that don't know, you can recloak after firing and the missiles will still travel for a few seconds before they deactivate. So if you are within 30-40km of your target, you can uncloak, lock, fire, and recloak and still hit your target.

I can't even count how many falcons I have chased out of engagements with a stealthbomber.
Don't always get them but they run away from the fight so its just as well since they are no longer putting their ewar to use in the main engagement.

Stealth Bombers are best used in fleets, or with patience.
As many posters say you have 2 main problems.
1. Range is nice but an alert target will warp off.... 2. If you are to close you are made of paper and will die...
The best way to overcome these is to have a friend (or NPCs) keep the target busy for a bit.
Once the target is thusly engaged you decloak. (use the passive targeter), then fire. Fire no more than 2 salvos, then cloak or warp out. If you stay for more than 2 chances increase that you will be destroyed especially if the target has speed or range.
In essence you are supplemental to the rest of the fleet.
Bombs are so expensive that they are impractical :(.
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts. |

No.
Anything a stealth bomber can do, a cruise Raven can do better. The only thing stealth bombers are good for is selling to newbies so you can buy ships that don't suck.
Edit: I know people are going to mention the following things:
1) Cloak. No, they can't. Any non-covert ops cloak is useless for anything other than hiding in safespots.
2) Black ops. Not until the fuel issue is fixed.
3) Bombs. Forget they even exist, they're way too expensive for what they do.

Can a Raven lock as soon as it de-cloaks? No? Didn't think so.
Can a Raven fit an Improved Cloaking Device and travel faster when it is cloaked that when it is decloaked (without AB/MWD)? No? Didn't think so.
The Stealth Bomber has a huge alpha strike capability for such a small ship but the most useful ability is the ability to lock something as soon as you decloak. Fit a sensor booster and a couple of damps and you can pretty much prevent anything sub BS size from locking you if you are 40km away unless they are set up with sensor boosters themselves. Use the same setup on a couple of bombers in a gang and you can be almost untouchable by larger ships that can't close range fast enough.
The other big difference is that if you align you can warp as soon as you uncloak as well since you will be going over your maximum uncloaked speed.

Personally, I wouldn't want to sit solo on a gate in a Raven with a slingshot bubble in 0.0.
A stealth bomber is just so much more maneuverable and carries that whole guerilla concept much farther, you can even do attrition on fleets that happen to land into your bubble, taking out their tacklers, then simply cloaking and moving away for a while while they frustradedly buzz around.
A raven would be tackled and dead in half a minute under the same circumstances. It's all about the ship for the role.

for solo, you have to be very picky about your targets just shooting things you can kill in 1-2 volleys. where SB's shine is when the're mixed with force recons. A few of each racial recon and 10 sb's for punch can take out alot. The falcons can make sure the target isn't shooting back and alpha striking for 2K or more from a frigate is a bad experience for whoever your killing. If your target calls backup you can ss and cloak...and they can probe all night while you drink beer and smack talk in local.
